Shutdown on Logoff
by Guest spence- 1 reply

Hi all, I'm trying to accomplish what I thought should be a simple task but has turned out to be quite the challenge. My team is building a virtual lab environment using Windows XP machines that revert to a clean state with each reboot. With that in mind, we've been trying to create a logoff script (and many other concepts) to force the computer to shutdown when a user clicks "logoff". I've found all sorts of documented cases where people are having this trouble. A couple things I read indicated that logoff scripts run under User context rather than Administrator. That in mind I went in to secpol.msc and added Users, SYSTEM, Everyone to the "Shut d…

Gurus, Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Sony Vaio laptop. Don't know what I've recently changed on my system but it's running fine except for one little problem - when I press the undock button on the docking station or try to undock it via the Start Menu nothing happens. It used to present a nice little dialog box saying undock is complete but now it doesn't do this anymore. Thoughts? -- Spin

I have just taken over a 25 node network that is set up with Windows 2000 SBS, and Windows 2000 Terminal Server on 2 boxes. the main server runs the applications needed for the local group, and the Terminal server facilitates remote users who access the same program and data structure set up as a terminal service via vpn connections. they have a firewall set to administer dhcp address to the remote hosts. my question is this, i have noticed that the Terminal Server is set to run in Remote Administration mode, yet it was set up in Application Server mode almost 2 years ago when it was set up. my understanding is this... in RA mode, the server should not …

The Drive That Is Not There

Windows XP(Home) SP3, IE 7; Clean & Updated, About 5yrs old. Hello, I purchased a 2nd Ext HHD for backups. When I decided to hook up the 2nd external drive I got lazy and did not completely detach the 1st ext HHD. I disconnected the connections to the 1st ext HHD(at the hard drive) and left its USB wire connected to the computer. The 2nd HHD connected fine and works fine. The 2nd ext drive took the drive letter of the 1st drive(E:), changed the drive letter for the 1st(original) HHD to (G:) although I was under the impression that the original HHD was not connected. Anyway, after disconnecting all USB devices (G:) still shows in "My Computer & W…

Replacing Norton antivirus

Hi, All. I still fixing my wifes PC after a crash and a WinXP reload... Rogers-Yahoo is our Internet provider so it seemed only natural to use its "free", i.e. paid for, protection software (a Symantec program suite) - so I downloaded it and installed it (as I did on my 3 GHz Pentium4 PC where it seems to work fine.) However, my wife's PC is only about 500 MHz. Symantec won't scan and I can't seem to fix it. Also, the PC ran fast enough before I downloaded the Roger-Yahoo stuff but now it's slowed to a crawl - every file transfer, even in the machine, seems to be virus checked and it takes far too long. Anyway, I propose to take the Roger-Yahoo stuff out a…

Whenever my registry is scanned either by regedit or AVG i get a blue screen of death. The error code is:0x00000050 (address error). The parameters are: 1 0xfdfffff8, 2 0x00000000 3 0x8054aa32B5B2, 4 0x00000000. Have tried taking out all hardware and drivers except AGP display card with same results. Removed AGP card and driver and used a known good pci graphics card with same results. Put in new memory and it checked good with mem86 3.4A. Still get blue scren of death when registry is scanned. Tried runnig PC PITSTOP full tests and still get blue screen. If I run in safe mode it runs everything fine. Does anyone know what to do to solve this proble…

How come my PC can't get to Gmail and google-groups??
by Guest Penang- 8 replies

To all ! Over this weekend (since last Friday), my computer can't access gmail.com and also groups.google.com ! No matter how I tried to access these two places, the browser will churn and churn, and then come back with an error. I can access google.com without any problem tho. I can also get into google.com.au and google.co.uk with ease. At first I thought that it was gmail at fault. But today, when I return to my office, I can get into gmail without any problem. That means, it's my PC that is preventing me from accessing gmail. Went back home, did a "ping job" - ping http://www.google.com -f -l 1500 - (also on http://www.google.com.au and http://www…

Crossed links for new user: XPHome
by Guest spamlet- 4 replies

Can't suss a presumed 'wrong link' issue after setting up a limited account on our XP Home laptop. When user clicks on Word icon or doc, system says it is preparing to install and set up Office, and eventually says target must be on another network resource. If these dialogues are just cancelled Word opens ok, but if it was one of the docs was used to open Word rather than just the Word icon itself, then no document actually appears when the programme opens. The same doc will open from within the File dialogue of Word itself: just not directly from MyDocs or Windows Explorer, unless Word is opened and the installer dialogues cancelled first. How …

Load balanced SMTP servers
by Guest Joe Brown- 1 reply

We have 3 SMTP servers. Several internal apps use these for relaying. Most of these apps only allow for one SMTP server when sending out alerts. If the server the app points too is unavavailbe then the apps can't send out emails. Can these be placed behind a CISCO load balancer? Is it supported? Are there any caveats?

How To Build Multi-Boot Box?

I'd like to put Windows XP and Linux on the same PC. Done it a long time ago with Win2k going at it from the Linux side - using something called "Grub". Can't remember the details, but it seems like it wasn't all that wonderful an experience. Is there a way to approach it from the Windows side? -- PeteCresswell

Video drivers won't install - unable to load aticim.dll
by Guest Zootal- 13 replies

I can no longer get any of the ATI drivers to install. XP64, two ATI 3870s, crossfired. When running installer, I quickly get Internal Failure: Error Number: 0x80040707, followed by "unable to load aticim.dll". I removed the existing drivers, and now none of the drivers will install, no matter which version I try. I'm dead in the water. I can install them with XP32 just fine, it's only my XP64 installation that is dead. I'm not seeing this mentioned much anywhere, and have not yet found a solution. Anyone have any suggestions?
