backing up settings
by Guest Jo-Anne- 18 replies

I'm about to install Acronis True Image 11 on my new laptop computer running Windows XP SP2. Before I do that, is there any way to back up my current settings? I've tweaked a number of things and don't want to lose what I've done if something goes wrong in the installation. (I don't have a floppy drive.) I also plan to create a Restore Point before installing the program, so I suppose that would protect everything. Thank you! Jo-Anne

Internet Explorer Memory Problem!
by Guest PrinceOfAldan- 1 reply

Hi, Since a few days ago, I have this problem: Whenever IE is open, the memory used by it is continuously growing, right now the memory used by IE is at 837MB and increasing. This is NOT adware/malware related! No malware of viruses on the system. This happens with ANY IE content, not a particular web site. When I minimize IE, the memory gets cleared, 837MB just changed to 16MB when I minimized it! The behavior is the same as many people have described here: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2082917&SiteID=17 But there is no solution and I am posting here to see if I can get any attention! It basically crashes my system when it ru…

My microsoft.public.windows newsgroups seem to be broken. After I post a question, I may see at most one reply. My reply to it is no more seen and that goes for whatever other replies I get. I have to go to google groups or the microsoft websites to see the rest. Is there anyway to repair my newsgroups? TIA

What backup program is best?

I have been using NTI (New Technology Inc.) File Backup for same time. Recently they "upgraded" to version 5, and made the user interface much less intuitive. Also, it seems to lose some information I entered, such as Job Name, Overwrite option, and Verify option. Is there a preferred file backup program that you experts recommend? (XP SP3.) Thank you.

Very Slow Respond.

I am not sure where the origins of the problem begin, so I will strat with TS since that is where it seems to be. I am running a single 2003 TS server (standard edt), so to have a second server, in a 2003 Enterprise domain. When the remote clients log into the TS server, the response is very slow (sometimes 5 to 10 minutes). it causes latency issues with applications and drive mapping. Any suggestions where I should start looking? I am at a loss.

Best way to create different start-ups?
by Guest Ed from AZ- 1 reply

I have a Dell Latitude laptop running XP Pro SP2. It has WiFi, firewall, spyware and AV software that runs at every start-up. I have one certain situation where I use the laptop on a regular basis in which I will never need the WiFi and anti-malware software to run. I'd like to create a start-up profile that does not include these so I don't have to wait until everyone finishes their scans and checks and connection attempts before I can have my machine back!! Is it easy enough to create a separate profile that would do this? Or would I need to investigate smoe kind of script that would toggle these? (Also, as part of this one specific use, I use the laptop…

Gurus, I am trying to change just the SourcePath value in my Windows Server 2003 Registry via script. I want to change it from it's current value to "D:\ENGLISH\WIN2003\32BIT\ENT_WITH_SP1\I386". What kind of simple script would enable me to change just that one value? The path to that is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. -- Spin

Robocopy

Where is the home of current Robocopy information? The sync software we use doesn't work on 2008. I'm awaiting an install of Commvault which will include the replication so in the short term Robocopy seems to work well. Is there somewhere where Robocopy and all its versions, faqs, etc lives. It appears to be built into the 2008x64 OS I have installed and I've seen mention of also built into Vista. It appears to be a later build which includes the dcopy:t timestamps funtionality although this is not listed in the output of /? - doesn't seem to be much info about.

XP Pro Academic Edition install problem
by Guest John- 3 replies

One of my laptops crashed on me and I replaced it with an Apple iMac. Since the new iMacs can run Windows, I tried to install the Academic Edition that I got a year or two ago so I could still use my Windows-based software. However, I'm getting an error message. The error message goes something like this (I'm paraphrasing): "The system did not detect a current version of Windows on this system. In order for you to install this upgrade version, you must prove your eligibility. Please insert any version of Windows XP, NT, 2000, Me, 98, etc., etc., etc. The XP Pro Academic Edition doesn't say it's an upgrade version on the disk. I've read a few posts…

XP network folder browsing is lagging
by Guest Madd Scientist- 0 replies

Hello all, I'm really hoping someone can help me with this problem, as I've been struggling with it for the past week. When browsing through a network drive, most of the folders work fine, but clicking on certain folders will lag/freeze Windows Explorer. If I click the affected folder and leave it for about 15-30 seconds, it will highlight itself, and then I can open it. This has only started being an issue in the past week or so. I've created a shortcut directly to the folder(s) on my desktop, and clicking on them from there will open them with no lag at all. There are video files in these folders (not in the direct root of the folder I'm having the issue…
