Terminal Server Events 1004 & 4105
by Guest Saucer Man- 6 replies

I am getting this Informational event logged on my terminal server (server 2008) whenever someone connects to it from within our domain. 1004 - "The terminal server cannot issue a client license. It was unable to issue the license due to a changed (mismatched) client license, insufficient memory, or an internal error. Further details for this problem may have been reported at the client's computer." We have 5 per user TS Cals installed. A Microsoft rep stated that per user Cals cannot be tracked and that this message is normal. I felt perhaps he was a little unsure about this as my call to them was actually on another issue. Does anyone know if this…

dead keys
by Guest Bob- 0 replies

I am sending WM_KEYDOWN messages from one window to another. This works OK in English. In e.g. French, with the target window using a French keyboard, I can use VkKeyScanEx to find out what key to send for most characters, like for 'ç', wParam is VK_9. But VkKeyScanEx is useless for characters that are entered using a dead key, like 'â' is the sequence wParam = VK_OEM_6 (a dead key) followed by wParam = VK_A. Is there some other function that will tell me how to convert a character into the proper dead key sequence for a given keyboard? Thanks, Bob

Antivirus Solutions

We're currently running SAV Corporate 10 on our 2003/XP network and really don't want to shell out the $1500 for new 50 new licenses. Symantec has become increasing more bloated with each new version to the point where, if I wanted to upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11, I'd need to upgrade my workstations, and that's not going to happen any time soon. I've been looking into some alternate solutions and wanted some opinions on NOD32. AVComparatives.org shows it has a high detection rate and there seems to be a lot of praise coming from IT admins in various forums. I've installed the trial and like it so far. Uses much less resources than SAV. Anyone h…

It looks like the end of life for Windows 98 Second Edition will be coming sooner than later sadly enough despite the fact that 98 Second Edition survived the attack in September 2007 when I was connected to the Albuquerque Public School Network via Virtual Private Networking and a fully updated Windows XP Professional was toast aka in this case annihilated. Yes, this news is now a year old but more critical than ever. Fortunately, Microsoft is now getting a clue and developing a new source code but it is very secretive of course due to Intellectual Property concerns and of course Microsoft does not want to take away from sales of Windows 7 which will ha…

MSVCR70.dll missing
by Guest David Schwartz- 5 replies

I uninstalled a number of programs from an old computer for my wife to use and now a number of programs, notably, Outlook Express gives me the error message that it can't find the file MSVCR70.dll. I did some research on the file and I know that it belongs in the Windows System32 folder. I have another computer networked to this one that has the file where it belongs. Can I just copy the file from this computer into her computer's System 32 folder and solve the problem or will that create another problem, like a registry problem that will make me wish I never woke up this morning or do I have to go through some anal Windows procedure to get the file wher…

Burning IMG file to DVD
by Guest Steve- 6 replies

I downloaded Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP2 (Trial edition) Microsoft's download page says to download and burn the ISO to CD or DVD but the download is a IMG extention, not ISO. I have tried to burn the IMG to DVD but all it does is move the file to the DVD and not extract it like a ZIP or ISO would. I am using Sonic DigitalMedia but can't seem to figure how to extract it. I have looked all over google for an answer and everyone seems to have this problem. I have changed the extention to ISO but that didn't do anything. Here is the link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/trial/installinstruct.mspx

SteadyState and WDP
by Guest Ray- 9 replies

I work in an elementary school and we are attempting to use SteadyState with Disk Protection enabled to protect the computers from the kids in the computer lab and Library. We have redirected the Desktop and My Documents folders to a network drive - but we have several applications that don't play nicely and store their data on the computer's hard drive and don't offer the option of changing the data location. Does anyone have any suggestions for some method of getting around this problem? If we can't find a solution, I'm afraid we're going to have to abort the whole process. 2 applications specifically are Type 2 Learn 3 by Sunburst Technology and KidPix …

Re-installing on laptop with no CD drive
by Guest Alpha- 14 replies

We need to re-install Windows 98 SE or ME or 2K-Pro on a laptop that has its CD drive internal connection damaged. The floppy drive works though. We have all the original Windows CDs and a Win98 boot floppy, as well as all the required drivers. The unit originally had Win98 on it that was later upgraded to WinME and subsequently to Win2K-Pro. Can we - take out the hard drive and format it (using appropriate existing adapters) in FAT on another machine and - copy the CD contents and device drivers to an install folder, and - put that drive back into the laptop, and - boot with the Win98 floppy, and - run Setup from the install folder, bypassing the CD drive? …
