Win XP SP3 fails to install and causes LAN to malfunction
by Guest M Shafaat- 5 replies

Hi, I run Win XP Pro SP2. After the automatic Win XP SP3 update failed, I tried in all the 3 ways instructed by Microsoft to redo it without success. I get the error message "Access is denied" after all tries . The same thing happened with my laptop. So it seems that this is a very common issue affecting many people. This has also caused my LAN no to function well. By restarting both the modem and router, I coul come out to the Internet, BUT still the other machines on the LAN cannot read the content in my machine and this is very important for me. Please help with both these issues. Regards M Shafaat

Mouse Freezes
by Guest User- 1 reply

XP Media Center, Version 2002, Service Pack 2 Dell Dimension E520 Quite often my USB mouse "sticks" for a moment, then recovers. Several times a day it freezes entirely and I have to unplug it then plug it back in to get it working again. (Some sort of driver conflict?) Surfing around on the web I see a lot of people recommending to uninstall/reinstall the mouse driver. But I'm a little reluctant to do this. If I uninstall the driver, won't the mouse stop working? How would I do anything after uninstalling the driver, and where would I find a new driver to install? Thanks.

program termination
by Guest LeoD- 0 replies

When a program or process is terminated, stopped or ended, it does not fully stop and is seen hanging around in the Windows Task Manager _ Precesses screen. It then has to be terminated by clicking on 'End process'. This happens with all applications. Some won't restart and gives the message 'application already running', even though it is not obvious on the screen. At the same time, on shutdown, a popup window appears advising svchost.exe - waiting to shut down. If the 'end now' is clsicked, the program ends but the computer takes >1 min to shut down. Are these problems related and is there a fix?

PCIIDEX.SYS BSOD
by Guest Clayton- 4 replies

Awhile back when clean installing Vista 64 I was getting a pciidex.sys BSOD towards the end of the install. I have done a few clean installs and sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't, I think it started doing this when I started installing Vista 64 with SP-1. I thought it maybe the IDE DVDRW drive I was using to install but it is also happening using a SATA DVDRW drive, now that I have a new computer it has no IDE connections on the X38 motherboard so I have ruled out the drives as being the cause of the problem, the pciidex.sys is the PCI IDE Bus Driver Extension described my Microsoft, someone at one stage pointed me to a patch but it is pointl…

'Unlock' process does not show up in process list
by Guest John- 0 replies

Windows XP Media Center edition. In the task bar where active tasks (i.e. firefox) sit when they are running, there is a process/task called "unlock". The only options available are minimize and close. I took a tasklist /v from the command line and saved it to a text file and started looking at the active processes. I didn't see anything odd, the usual svchost etc. So I closed the "unlock" and took another tasklist -v To my surprise, there was no difference in size between the before an after images. I did some googling but couldn't find anything about "unlock" that looked specific enough to tell me what' going on. I'm not at that computer now, but…

Missing Module
by Guest LARRY- 0 replies

My problem started with a quick DOS message saying an application failed. This occurred as I was loading a game disk ( warlords ) that I've played for years on this PC. The PC will no longer autorun the disk. I had no Idea what happened so I put in on my wifes PC and it ran fine. In the error log , over and over it says " the specified module could not be found" How do I find out what is missing? I tried to go back and restore the system. There six restore points available, and not one of them would work. I have dissabled the restore option for now. I've run spybot search and destroy, AFG and addware and no errors found. I was going to try DrWatson, but my…

Live Messenger does not sign in:
by Guest Navyguy- 7 replies

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, with DSL connection. I have AVG antivirus free version 7.5, Comodo firewall, Spyware Blaster and Hive Cleanup and all work well with no conflicts and I haven't added anything to my computer. Previously my Live Messenger use to sign in automatically whenever I booted up my computer but I've noticed that recently that after trying a number of times it fails and requires me to click the icon which then proceeds to login with no problem. It never did this before and I shouldn't have to click the icon. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me correct this minor problem. Thanks, Robert

Hi all, For some burocratic reasons i'll have to put a few winXP machines printing at two printers simultaneously, so that every print made will also create a pdf file in a remote server... so i allready have a virtual printer sending pdf files to the server and the real printer configured on those machines, but now i need a hack to put windows printing in bouth printers all printing jobs taken by the users, and i don't know how to do this... i imagined another virtual printer installed that forwards the job to other printers, so that this new virtual printer would be the default one, and in it's preferences i could set the two printers that will receive th…
