Server 2003 File Rights
by Guest Mike- 3 replies

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding file rights. According to what I've read and understand when a folder is copied from one location to another it will inherit the rights from the new parent folder, however if a folder is moved to a new location it will retain the old rights that it had previous to the move. At this point we have to access the share and force the inheritance to make the folder have the correct rights. This link explains what I'm seeing... http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2005/06/10/exam-70-290-copyingmoving-folders-files/ We would like the inherited rights to apply regardless of whether the folder is copied or moved. Is this a …

Home Folder
by Guest Jasper Recto- 4 replies

Our users each have a their own Home folder. When they log into the domain, it automatically connects them to it based on their user profile information. However, sometimes when they log in, it does not connect to their individual folder but to the parent folder. For example, a users home folder is set to this: Z: drive --> \\Fileserver\Users\JohnDoe. The Users folder is the shared folder in this case. When they log in, their Z: drive should be linked to that location. However sometimes it does not map directly to the JohnDoe folder, it maps to the Users folder where they see all the users folders listed in there. Why does it do this and…

Windows 2008 in TS role, no sound devices?
by Guest mat- 6 replies

I would like to test windows 2008 in it's terminal services role. In particular I would like to see how it does with sound playback and recording from remote workstations. I've installed it on an older pc and the built in audio chip is not recognized (asus K8N motherboard). If I buy a windows 2008 compatible soundcard, will I be able to proceed with my testing? Can anyone recommend a card? Seems like an obvoius question but I wanted to confirm.

There was a good disucssion of this back in Jan, but I don't recall a certain outcome. Most of the thread participants seemed to think that a Windows CAL had to be purchased for each TS user/CAL. Others thought only the TS CAL was needed?

Server 2003 - System process hogging CPU
by Guest ctech- 0 replies

We are using Windows Server 2003 and in the past couple of days the System process has been taking about 50% of the CPU. I am using a program called "Process Explorer" but can't nail down what is actually causing this. Prior the System process was only using about 5% of the CPU. There have been no addionational software or hardware changes recently. This is causing some network file sharing to be sluggish. Any help in pointing me in the right direction to try find the issue that is causing this would be appreciated.

Service Recovery Options
by Guest Bart Perrier- 2 replies

We are considering configuring the Recovery Options for a service in the event of a failure and for the Third Recovery Option, we have discussed launching a vbScript to send an email. Although the script to send the email is straight forward, I would like to make it generic enough to be able to apply it to any service without modifications. The pertinent information for the script would be Server Name Service Name Is there a value I can poll on the fly that will provide me with the Service which failed or some way to identify which service failed without hardcoding it in the script? (Hardcoding it is not an unreasonable option but, if I can grab it…

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache And when I try to run "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\wmic" or "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\wmic" I get the following error message: Please wait while WMIC compiles updated MOF files.
