svchost.exe is a virus! HELP!
by Guest Devonshire- 4 replies

I am getting desperate here. Symptoms: svchost.exe pops up before i can even log on. Once logged on the svchost error messages are persistent. Opening "My Computer" produces an scvhost.exe error pop up and the flashlight starts searching, maybe it opens in 30-45 seconds. Activating ANY and ALL apps triggers scvhost.exe errors. Any file saving or opening in ANY and ALL apps causes a 30-45 second delay with a svchost.exe error. I have updates all the recomended Windows Update fixes, patches, windows installer, etc. as recommended by Microsoft I purged al cookies, temp files, ie history, etc. I spent maybe 4 hours with Alienware tech support …

XP Home: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file
by Guest athompson- 0 replies

NOTE: Yes, I posted this somewhere else a few minutes ago. Just blame the MS->news site and let it go... I worked on two PC's in the last 2 weeks with this problem. The first was Thursday the 14th, the second was earlier this week. I sent them both home working after doing a dirty/repair install of Windows XP. I just got a call from one of the users(who has dedicated internet access) and the problem is back as of this morning. Looking in Add/Remove programs, it seems Windows downloaded a slew of updates and installed them early this morning. As before, the programs run OK in safe mode. These are both XP Home systems. This problem affects N…

W2K Bootup problem + slowed machine
by Guest Olin K. McDaniel- 18 replies

In recently downloading all headers from the past several months and then downloading selected posts, I found a couple that addressed a problem very similar to one I've now got. However, there didn't seem to be a genuine solution to their problems, so I'm reopening essentially the same subject and asking for help. I may have a few different and perhaps more useful observations to throw out this time. My system consists of an older CPU (Pentium III, 600 MHz), and a matching MB. For years now I've used it as a Dual Boot System, one being Windows 98 SE and the other being Windows 2000 Pro, with Service Pack 4. (For the record, W98SE is FAT 16, while Win2K is F…

Is there a way to change the backup diretory used by OS Hotfixes/Service Packs without having to run the hotfixes/Service Packs Manually? We install all of our patches via Windows Update or SUS. Our system drive is getting low on space due to the backup directory getting full. I would like to relocate the backup directory to drive d: or e: Thanks. Don Jones

How can user kill own session
by Guest Marc- 4 replies

Hello Newsgroup, is there a way (script, small tool etc.) which gives an user the possibility to "kill" his own session on a Windows 2003 wts NLB? Sometimes we have users, which have hanging sessions. When they "disconnect" the session and logon again, the user gets his old hanging session (from the session directory). Thank you. Regards Marc

Multiple displays in Windows XP: How to change default arrangment?
by Guest Curious1- 5 replies
I have a screen and laptop that I want to run together. The screen sits above the laptop and for convenience I'd like the default virtual arrangment to mirror the physical layout, so that when I plug it in, I can simply move the mouse up or down to the other screen. Does anyone know how to do this in Windows XP?

Never ending install loop with Roxio
by Guest pelleindc- 2 replies

Hi, Hopefully someone can help me with this problem. Last week I ran a registry cleaner and software uninstall. Ever since then there is a nasty never ending loop. Immediately after startup a window pops up stating: 'Please wait while Windows configures Rexio Media Manager' After a while i get following error message: 'Unable to find a certtficate file' I click ok and the 'Please wait....' continues with 'Gathering required information'. At that time msiexec.exe takes 100% of the CPU utilization. Tried ending the process in taskmgr but that jus retarts the process. Tried the cancel button in the window as well but that only changes the status me…

Re-partitioning system drive without having to rebuild?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 10 replies

New PC. 40-gig "C" drive. System + Apps < 10 gigs. I'd like to re-partition the device so there's 30 gigs for "C" and 10 or whatever's left over for a "D" drive. Seems like last time I tried this by making an image, re-partitioning, and then trying to restore the image, the image utility didn't buy it bco the size discrepancy. Dunno if re-partitioning it "as-is" is possible, but it sounds like a bad idea. Anybody have a suggestion? -- PeteCresswell

Forward Email to Individual Accounts
by Guest jmhmaine- 0 replies

Hi: I have an STMP and POP3 Service running on a Windows 2003 server. I have setup a few accounts under one of the domains hosted on the server. What I would like to do is setup a forwarding script/program/task that would forward mail addressed to a certain account to another individual email address that is not hosted on the server, such as: Mail to joe@smith.com is sent to jane@yahoo.com In this example smith.com is hosted on my server. I do NOT want to setup a generic forward for the whole domain to another SMTP server. Thanks.

Client OK but can't ping
by Guest dan- 8 replies

I'm trying to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a client (from the internet, not internal). If I use the client's IP address I succeed, but if I use the client's computer name I fail. Upon further investigation, if I remote into my server first (Windows Server 2000), then try to ping the client, it fails whether I use IP address or computer name. If I look in the forwarding zone of DNS on the server, the record correctly maps 192.168.1.212 to RWWS1, which is the client I'm trying to reach. Where should I look for the root cause of my problem (not being able to RDC to the client with the computer name). The client functions perfectly on the netw…

is there a way that i can make windows XP automatically reactivate a disk rather than i have to go into the disk management and do it manualy. i mean windows can detect the connection of the disk so it would be nice if it could also reactivate it.
