Only a minor annoyance for me, but others have asked (online and offline) and I don't know the answer. Why does it take so damned long to populate Add/Remove Programs? Can anything be done about it? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User http://www.grystmill.com

NT Server migration question
by Guest cberends- 7 replies

I have a "old" windows nt 4.0 pdc on a domain that is no longer needed, and we want all nt4.0 domain to be dead. this is the last server in the domain. Issue is I need to migrate the ip, name, permissions, iis (ftp and IIS), files to a new/different domain without the least amount of headache to the users. This server has automated processing attached to it and of course know one has documented all this processes. This server is also acting as a file server for ftp/file shares. O one other thing it is having hardware issues and is it out of warrenty so I need a resolution soon before everything is forced to do things the hard way. Does anyone know h…

New file won't inherit folder's security settings
by Guest Janet- 2 replies

I know permissions can be confusing. But I'm at a loss as to how to deal with our problem. New files saved to a folder are readable only by the creator, when we'd like them available to all users. Here's a description: Bob and Betty are members of the Users group. The server (running Server 2003) has a folder called "CompanyDocs" which is shared as "Docs". The "Docs" sharing permission: Everyone -- Full/Read/Write. The security on the Docs folder is: Administrators -- Full/Modify/Read&... (everything is checked except special) Users -- same as Administrators above Allow inheritable is unchecked Now we drill down several leve…

USB root hub Power usage tab missing
by Guest Ian D- 1 reply

Has the Power tab for USB root hubs in the Device Manager been removed by a recent update - last couple of months or so? The reason I ask is it's no longer there in 3 up to date XP Pro installations, retail and OEM, but one install that's about a dozen updates behind still has the Power tab. This refers to the USB port power usage tabs, not the power management tabs that are still there. ID

USB2 (Highspeed) not detected by XP PRO
by Guest zero- 2 replies

If I connect ANY USB Highspeed (USB2) device to ANY USB port, and even if it is the only USB device, I always get the pop-up message... (XP Pro SP2 is always giving me the same message) "...this device can perform faster if you connect it to a high-speed USB 2.0 port". The Bios shows USB Highspeed is enabled. The XP Device Manager shows "USB Enhanced" controller. MB is ASUS P4S8X-MX is USB 2. I can't make any sense of this. Indeed I have verified that the data transfer speed is snail slow.

Adding Terminal Services to SBS2K Domain
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 1 reply

We have an SBS2000 domain - NOT SBS2003 - with 15 licenses We also have a Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 box that is used as a file/ application server in the same domain. We are considering using the Terminal Services capability of the 2003 Server (not activated yet) to allow (5) thin-clients on the factory floor to connect to the Windows 2003 Server. Questions: 1. Can we activate a Termianl Server in this domain? 2. If so, can anyone give us guidance on how the licensing for the thin-clients will work? That is, does Termianl Server, once activated, already have the (5) licenses we would need? 3. Would we have to buy any additional licenses for the SBS2000…

What is best thin client hardware.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 2 replies

Apologies if on wrong forum but question is due to using Terminal Services. All my users now spend 99% of their time on TS and do no work on their local PC. I have a new user and need new hardware and stumbled upon the 'thin client' concept which sounds great. A brief look at the major hardware suppliers showed that only HP have TC hardware. Surely that cannot be right and any comments on their products in the Microsoft TS environment. Um is there a thin client forum? -- Regards Tom

I was getting the message: The Windows Installer Service Could not be Accessed. This can occur if you are in safe mode of if the windows installer is not properly installed. I went to the following KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346 I found 2 msiexec.exe file one in windows system32 and one in SP2. I followed step 2 and went to regedit and changed the location to be the SP2 location (the previous location looked like (((Value/// My Doc's))) Then I brought up safe mode hitting F8 and proceeded with step 3. but when I tried to run misexec /regserver. It said it could not be found. I tried restarting the computer again but when I hit F…

mouse cursor position in XP
by Guest Jeff- 3 replies

Is there a way to make the mouse cursor position follow where I am typing? I am using XP on a notebook. While typing, I will suddenly find that what I am typing is suddenly jumped way above, apparently following where my cursor remained the last time I used the touchpad. It can get very annoying. It would be nice if the cursor did not stay put where I last left it but instead moved and followed along as I type. Is there a setting I can change for that to happen? Thanks. Jeff
