Boot up order
by Guest General Mailbox- 5 replies

Greetings, Is there a way to have XP startup programs, from a cold or warm boot, in a fashion a user can designate? I think with all the programs & processes that get turned on at the initial start up, it's causing the computer to take longer to boot. Meaning to say that requests are made of the processor to turn on several things simultaneously and bogs it down. I would like to have my firewall and AV pgm turned on before other non-urgent processes. And I would like to see them sent in an order giving time for the preceeding process to finish loading before going onto the next. Thanks! B.rgds, Kevin

[XP HOME] WMP11 audio is scratchy, alternative players NOT.

I tried different codecs, Dell drivers, Windows Update, slowed down and stopped hardware acceleration but no difference, scratchy audio. I upgraded from WMP10 on a Dell OptiPlex GX270. My other Dell (Dimension 8300) upgraded to WMP11 just fine.... Was anyone else stuck with scratchy audio but found a different solution other than the ones commonly mentioned? P.S. I'm using VideoLan and Media Player Classic until I fix WMP11, no scratches!

I've set up my spare computer with a Limited account so I can experiment 'safely '. I'd like to share folders on the local network , but the tab is greyed out. I BELIEVE I have to give permission , ( Local Security Policy ??) but I can't find the correct setting. Can anyone help ?

I want to put together a demo of the top 10 Windows admin tasks, but using PowerShell (if it supports that task). Anyone know of an online reference that might point me in the right direction, or even just post your own "top 10 list" here. I use a wireless aircard. I configured the devise to open the browser with MSN.com. No problemo. But if I close the browser then reopen it with the desktop IE icon, it opens with google, even after changing the address in internet options. Can the registry be edited to eliminate the google address and how and where do I accomplish the task? -- RoscoeT

I recently installed Linux Mandriva in my WinXP m/c. My m/c. already had 2 Linux partitions along with a Linux Swap partition (apart from the Windows partitions) but when I was trying to install Linux Mandriva in the 2 Linux partitions, due to some reasons, Linux refused to install in my hard disk (I want the dual boot option of Linux & WinXP in my m/c). Ultimately I installed Linux in the Windows partition by resizing the Windows partition (C: drive). Linux got installed successfully but WinXP got corrupt in the process (I am using the Linux GRUB bootloader to boot my m/c). Now when I boot my m/c, it gives me dual boot option of Linux & WinXP but when…

Windows Installer

My brother says every time to boots up he get a Windows Installer window that he can only close using End Task procedures. Anyone have a idea why he keeps getting that option. I had him confirm he doesn't have his Win XP CD loaded. I searched Help for Windows Installer and one of the options to make changes was using msiexec /i at the command line. I asked him to check for that command in Start... msconfig....Start Up and uncheck it if it showed there. Any other ideas?
