No golden bar shown at the top and can't download file

I tried to install adobe flash player to my Windows XP SP2 laptop by following the steps. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=DINNK However, after I press "Agree and install now", I moved into http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/flash/trigger/en/1/index.html However, I didn't see the golden bar at the top such as "The site might require the following ActiveX control ...". No message shows anything was blocked. Nothing! It is wierd, and I guess my registration table might be modified by some software without my attention. Any idea to solve my problem? Thank you very much.

Calculator is missing from my computer. I am running XP Media Center Edition. I have searched for Calc.exe in Systems 32 and then ran a general search. I believe I deleted the program by accident, thinking it was something else. Anyone have a way that I can download the software?

VPN PPTP Problem

Hi, I'm having this problem since a few weeks now and just can't get around it. I have WinXP SP3 on two laptops. I can use VPN PPTP to connect to a particular server on one laptop but not on the other. The problematic laptop gives me a message error 628: The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number. I tried reinstalling WinXP on this laptop and the VPN worked fine on a fresh install of windows only to give the same problem again after a while. Anyone ever had the same weird problem? I don't think its related to firewa…

Irregular Boot.ini

I partitioned the harddisk into two parts and have set up a dual boot system with two separate operating systems. Normally there should be two lines in the boot screen so that one can select one of the two systems. In my case there should appear as below: Windows 2000 I Windows 2000 II with clock counting This time, for some unknown reasons, there appears three lines as below: Windows 2000 I Windows 2000 II Windows 2000 (Default) There, "Windows 2000 (Default)" is hilighted and If I don't move to another, the computer clashes. Also there is no clock counting the preset time. If I select "Windows 2000 I" or "Windows 2000 II", it proceeds to boot …

Windows Installer keeps crashing my laptop!
by Guest CathrynH- 4 replies

I had a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. I can't get on with it and most of my clients aren't on it so it isn't of much use to me. I decided to uninstall it through the control panel. I obviously haven't managed to do this properly as it still features in the list of programmes, although I can't access any of the components. Since then, the Windows Installer keeps popping up telling me it is preparing to Install (it never specifies what it thinks it is going to do!). It often appears if I try and do anything in Outlook, but also in other Office applications. It causes the whole system to hang and eventually crash. When I try and open a 20…

Threats to your Internet usage - what, why, and how
by Guest MEB- 4 replies

Many users of the Internet believe that because of the billions of users, they are protected from malicious attacks. These people apparently fail to understand the WHAT, HOW, WHY some of these attack activities occur. Others believe that the protections offered by the OSs somehow keeps these malicious activities from occurring. Hackers LOVE these people, they are the "meat and potatoes" of the hacker world. I've posted things like "clickjacking", linked sites, SSI {server-side includes}, embedded code, and other methods in this group, however, there still seems to be a lack of comprehension of certain points. Here's a link to one site which deals with so…

Log on time restricitons
by Guest FL- 4 replies

I have a Windows 2003 64bit TS server and before you suggest using the 2x secure RDP tool, it doesn't work on a 64bit system. I am looking to apply log on restrictions where users cannot log in on my terminal server after a certain period of time. Is there any way to do that via Group Policy or other method that only affects log ons to the terminal server? Also, can I restrict the domain account from being able to log in via TS only (don't think so)?

Removing no longer used notification items from taskbar and startu
by Guest edimerq- 3 replies

Is there some way to remove no longer used notification items from the Taskbar and Start menu properties? I mean that place you find when you --- Right click on the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop, (click Properties), (click Hide inactive icons), (click Customize) then look in (Past Items). In that place there is a antivirus 2009 folder, which is a virus I already removed from my computer, and that is the only thing I am not able to remove. I don't want to download any more softwares to remove it. I've already done that. I just want to know if there is a way to remove things from that place on my own. -- emm

Find in W2K8 Enterprise changing to wingdings?
by Guest David B- 4 replies

I've been trying out Windows Server Enterprise 2008 and have to keep reinstalling. The desktop slowly sees the fonts change, over a period of a few weeks, from normal to wingdings, making it all unreadable. This has happened multiple times. Avast Server Antivirus does not find anything, nor do I see anything off in Hijack This. I'll attach a screenshot in my reply email, so that it is only by choice that you see the screen shot. This is the 64 bit version, by the way. On the same machine, 32 bit is happy as a clam. This one boggles my mind. David

Is there a hard drive file organizer that will ... 1 2
by Guest 98 Guy- 37 replies

Is there a hard drive file organizer, optimizer, "cleaner", that will a) identify multiple copies of the same file based on - same file name (but perhaps binary identical, perhaps not) - different name, but binary identical and either follow your rules (eg smart rename) or allow you to easily move them around or delete the duplicates b) identify, catalog or list the version numbers of multiple copies of the same system files (.exe, dll, etc) The goal is to use such software (instead of manual exploration and file cutting and pasting) to organize and aggregate the contents of possibly up to a few dozen hard drives. Most hard drive file o…

Hello All, Working on a very disturbed system this week, and after running every thing I could think of, I'm here. Back ground... Older Dell system, running XP Pro. Hasn't ran since Febuary when the network adapater quick working. After my first initial look at the system, someone put some cheap anti-virus program on the system and it quaranteened the svchost file... rpc won't load.. you know the rest. Well that was great, got a new svchost installed, but nothing was starting. All kinds of services were no longer listed in the registry. Fun for me. Loaded Ultimate boot cd for Windows, grabed an older version of the registry files, copied them into th…

Creative Labs Audigy SE sound card driver installation woes
by Guest Bill Ross- 2 replies

Hi, I'm a fellow fool who bought XP64 and regretted it ever since because of the endless compatibility issues. My latest nightmare... I bought a Creative Labs Audigy SE sound card which had an XP64 driver which installs fine in Safe Mode but will not run if not in Safe Mode. Currently, the card is listed in the device manager with a yellow exclamation point. I am assure that it is compatible but I have spent many hours doing the various clean boot, uninstall and reinstall activities that Creative Labs has suggested. Is there an explanation? Thanks, Bill Ross
