Network with Win98 and WinXP
by Guest Rosivaldo Fernandes Alves- 12 replies

I have an old computer with Win98 installed and a new computer with WinXP installed? How can I safely put both to work together in a home network? I'm afraid of allowing the Win98 to access the internet, since it doesn't have automatic update from Microsoft, so it may have security holes that will never be closed. How can I solve these questions? Thanks in advance. Rosivaldo.

"All Fax Printers Are Inaccessible"
by Guest Monica- 0 replies

This is the message I have in the lower right corner of MS Fax Console (v.5.1 SP 2) I remember when I first installed XP years ago that there was issue with the fax console. Seems like maybe it didn't automatically install and after installing it I had to download and add a file??? Not sure, but I am sure it's been working fine since I installed XP and fix for the fax console. Just in the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that the "Sent" folder won't display the faxes I've sent and the above message is at the bottom of the screen (after several seconds of trying to "refresh"). Some of the Inbox faxes are listed, not all of them, but they can't open…

When I was prompted to install chinese language support, the message came up to insert the Windows XP DVD. I inserted the DVD that came with my computer and it seemed to be copying files for a while then stopped with a message that it couldn't find xjis.nls. What do I do now? I have no idea where to find this file. Is there an error free download I can use that will install cinese language support? Ed

SetupAPI fails to find pscript5.dll on Vista 64Bit
by Guest Markus- 1 reply

Hello, I am installing a PostScript Printer Driver (pscript5.dll + .ppd) using a custom inf file. It should install on all current operating systems (Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, Vista) and as well on x86 and x64 Systems. I use the Setup API to install it from a windows installer package. It installs well on x86 Windows without prompting for files. But when I install on x64 Windows (32 Bit install program), it fails to find pscript5.dll. Even if i add C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\X64 to the source list programmatically (using SetupAddToSourceList), it will come up with a prompt asking me for it's location. If I select C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\D…

What to build

I'm a fairly tech savy kind of person, but have been out of the scene for a while. My question is about 64-bit machines vs 32-bit machines. While I see there may be a few compatability issues, technically, should my 32-bit software work on a 64-bit OS/machine? (ie. dreamweaver, flash, office xp, fireworks, illustrator... etc.)

IE 7 in Vista 64
by Guest Kue2- 4 replies

I went on utube last night & played a few videos. After I had played about 3 & clicked on another to play.IE7 (latest updates applied) decided it had enough & popped up a box informing me the it had to close. My only option was to click "ok" button. This has occurred twice now using IE7. The other time I had 3-4 windows open in IE7. Same option only able to click "ok" button & IE7 closed completely. No error messages or explanation. Anyone else getting this odd behavior? Comments? Fixes?

workgroups and netbios resolution
by Guest Joe- 0 replies

I have a Windows 2000 domain controller I am pulling out of an environment for various reasons. The 20 desktops were pointing to that device for WINS, but now they are going to be in the same workgroup. Since they are in the same workgroup, how will they communicate by computer name? I assume ensuring netbios over tcp/ip would do it. Anything else required?

by Guest eahunter46- 9 replies

Hi Here is the description of the problem: Installed MS office 2003 on Terminal Server using MST designed to allow auto-generation of the outlook profile whenever new user logs on. Default profile was overwritten with new default profile AFTER the above was done, now auto-generation of outlook no longer works and we have to define exchange server and user name every time a new user needs to logon. Here is what has been done to try and rectify: Uninstalled Microsoft office, overwrote default user profile one more time and reinstalled Office using newly regenerated MST- did not work Here is installation command for office: \\ufpasrv02\si\office2003\setup…

Sharring ones computer
by Guest RBB- 4 replies

I know this question must read a little strange but I am a family man who purchased this computer and all software which is installed on it. Windows XP Home Edition. I allow; my daughter, my son, my mother and of course myself to use the computer. My daughter is a student so I purchased MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. I also purchased Windows Lvie One Care. My questions are , "Am I commiting a crime by allowing my family members to use my computer?" Am i defaulting on those Eula Agreements? Do I select that option that my computer is sharred, not to save ones address book on it?

Redmond's Con Game 1 2

The formula that helped Microsoft attain vast power and wealth was: 1. Make the non-standard Office Suite the soup du jour on every table. This worked, except for the huge legal field, who continue with Word Perfect, and the 25% who have discovered Open Office/Star Office. 2. Let 'piracy' run rampant, until everyone is 'hooked' on their drug. Then, the continued habit will be very expensive. 3. Suppress all instances of mention of alternative OSes, better, or less expensive products, by a campaign of media lies and distortions. 4. Buy the press, bribe the media. Insert $1 billion in advertising and 'white papers'. Offer free stuff t…
