I have a three week old install of win 2003 Enterprise on a 19 gig partition. There are few programs installed on it(symantec endpoint, sp2, .net framework 2.0, java runtime, and the rest on D: where SQL 2000, syspro, and office 2003 are installed. up until a few days ago there was at least 5 gigs left on C:. i remoted on today and found that there is only 550mb left. I had this issue with two other servers recently and had to rebuild the system drives becuase i could not find what was taking up the drive space. I checked and cleared the event logs, temp files, and ran a diagnostic for larg files but none were found-HELP! This is my SQL server and would re…

We have a TestLab and we'd like to install Windows 2003 Standard on one of our servers for a 30day test Run alongside some software that we are testing. Do we need to purchase a specific license to do this or can we just download a trial copy and use it for the 30 days?

Server 2003 R2 problem with locked files
by Guest Lasse- 5 replies

Hi I don't know if this is the correct place to post my message but here goes :-) The last couple of weeks we have started encountering a problem with some of our clients. Sometimes when they want to open a Excel document they get an error from Excel telling that the document is already opened by the same user. The user have normally used the exact same document earlier the same day so it should be fine. The only solution I have found is to make a copy of the file and then restart the server which isn't very usefull. If I check which files are open on the server the locked file is not on the list. Any idea? /Lasse

Another nail in the W98 coffin?
by Guest keith- 24 replies

Have been using MSNBC news as my homepage for quite a few years. Thats MS as in MicroSoft. W98 didn't seem to care too much for their new and improved website a while back and any vid from that site would/will freeze this computer and are avoided like the plague. No problem with vids on other news sites. But there has been an odd intermittent problem of late. MSNBC.com site will open just fine when I get there from the desktop IE icon but "internet explorer cannot open the site..." if I try to go there ('Home') from some other site AND if I'm on their site and click on any news story and then go back to the main site page via the 'Home' or 'Back' button I'l…

Delete Stubborn Mystery Files
by Guest Darrel- 5 replies

Several files with names like CA6Z8TYN with attribute HSA and size 0 kB have appeared on my drive. Unable to delete them. Attrib -H -S CA6Z8TYN simply gets File not found. They foul up backups as XP ain’t smart enough to ask „Do you want to skip this file?“ but just grinds the copy to a standstill. How to get rid of them?

If your XP SP3 computer has no WindowsXP cds but only factory Recovery CDs with no Recovery Console how would one go about rewriting the MBR if it was somehow damaged other than reinstalling Windows or an image of the Windows drive?Aren't there floppy discs that can do this? My laptop has a floppy drive.

I got a set of discs from a friend who burned them for me . It's a series I wanted . She sent them to me and I can't play them or view them in windows explorer. Although my cd-dvd drive is about four yrs old it still plays games and music cds. Was wondering if the discs she sent were ripped in a different format that my drive can't read. I have Win DVD and windows media player, and neither of these recongizes the disc. they don't auto-play.

font format problems

If I select plain view when composing a message like this one, this is what I see (bold text) in the compose window. If I select rich text, the font is normal but I am unable to send the message. Also, how can I change the font size when viewing anything in MS Windows XP. Except for here, all windows programs, the font is so small that I can hardly read it.

What can cause a System Restore not to work?
by Guest PRNole- 6 replies

I have been trying to find some Restore point that works but am finding that none of them do. I have at least 1 1/2 months of Restore points available and have not been able to find one that will work. So I'm stuck. Any reason why this is happening? I have previously been able to Restore w/o problems but had not done so in several months, so I'm not sure why this is happening now.

Exterior Hard Drive Crash
by Guest bobbymike- 6 replies

My Sony Windows XP Media Edition crashed a few months ago .. luckily I had all my important documents, photos, etc backed up on a WD exterior hard drive. In August I got a new Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop running Windows XP Professional. Unfortunately I did not copy all the important info from the exterior hard drive to this new Dell. Last week, I went to open up the exterior hard drive and this message came on screen - 'The Disk in Drive F is not formatted. Do you want to format it now'- Long story short, took the exterior hard drive to my trusted computer guy who ran it all weekend trying to recover the data . He had no luck - could not recover anything. Sh…

SP 2 to SP 3 update
by Guest Desert Rider- 16 replies

I'm currently running SP2 with all current updates. I'm about to update to SP 3 (through Windows Update) and thought I'd ask advice about anything I should do in preparation for the update. I will be making a disc image using Acronis before the update. I use BitDefender as an AV program. Should I disable it during the update? I assume I should keep the BD firewall activated during install. Any other tips or advice appreciated.
