by Guest LifeOnMars- 3 replies

Hi there Do 32bit apps, such as a password cracking applications run at a 64bit 'mode' when installed and run in a 64bit environment? I have a dual core 2GH laptop and have installed Windows XP Pro 64bit on it to speed up the password crunching process but the application is not specifically designed for a 64bit environment. Am I clutching on straws? Thank you LifeOnMars

Save As dialog in MS Office hangs
by Guest Thorbjorn Sundboe- 2 replies

Hi, When I try to use the Save As dialog from Word, Excel or Powerpoint 2003, my system hangs for a long time when I try to choose destination folder in the "Save in" drop down. The drop down where I see the folder goes completely grey, I do not even see the folder frield anymore. After 1-3 minutes, it comes back. Then, when I choose folders or shortcuts in the folder list, it can take the same amount of time for each folder in the hierarchy I click on. I should have a very clean system, I have licensed software to clean registry, temp files, background programs and other resource culprits. I have defragged, ran checkdisk, etc. I am running a Thinkpa…

System Restore and Deleted Files

Hi, I accidentally deleted some very important files today. If I go back and do a system restore will the files be retrieved? I've read the other posts about these "undelete" programs, but since the language tends to get a bit technical for me, I'm hesitant to try them. Thanks, shirley

Manually Start ScreenSaver
by Guest Duncan Anderson- 5 replies

I know that the ScreenSaver can be previewed through the Display option within Control Panel. That isn't what I want. I want to be able to manually start the screensaver whenever I leave my desk. I have the re-start - after the screensaver has come on - password protected, so by having being able to manually start the screensaver I'm manually locking off my computer without shutting down any programs. If there isn't anyway to manually start the screensaver, does anybody know of a little bit of Freeware that will do the same or another way of locking my computer without closing down programs. TIA Duncan Anderson

RDP stopped working
by Guest Frank- 6 replies

For some reason, I can no longer connect to my domain controller using RDP. I can do so to any other server. From my workstation, if I attempt telnet <servername> 3389, I get no response. From the domain controller, if I attempt telnet <localhost> 3389, I get the response "...could not open connection to the host on port 3389. Connect failed..." Running netstat -a -o shows nothing using port 3389. I've done nothing to cause this port to be blocked on 3389 on this server. Anyone encounter this mystery? Even better: anyone have a solution to the mystery? Thanks!

WDS hangs at OS Chooser V5.0 screen
by Guest Chris- 2 replies

We are implementing Server 2003SP2 with Windows Deployment Services. I have successfully installed and configured the server according to the Step-by-Step Guide for Windows 2003. I have been able to capture an image, and deploy it to several computers without any problems. However, there are a few computers that when they are booted to the network using F12, hang at a black screen with "OS Chooser v5.0" in the top left corner. After a few minutes, the screen will turn blue and be completely blank. Then nothing happens at all. I am not sure what may be causing this as the computers that "hang" at this point are exactly the same model of laptop, with ide…

Switching External Modems on Win2000/Pro
by Guest Chaim Caron- 3 replies

Hello All, I want to switch external modems on my Win2000/Pro machine. Do I have to "remove" the modem using the "Add/Remove Hardware" applet in the control panel? Or is it sufficient to power down the machine and switch the modems? I may want to reinstall the original modem later. I am having a problem with PCAnywhere on a dialup and I want to see if the problem is with the modem, that's why I am switching modems. If switching modems does not fix the PCA problem, I will return the original modem. Thanks! Also: I'm not sure if I have an installation disk for the modem I'm switching in. It is an old Practical Peripherals, model PC288 LCD v.3…

In both default domain group policy and default domain controller group policy, I disabled 'Password must meet complexity requirements'. But why am I still not able to use a simple password when creating a user under User container on a domain controller? I don't have any OUs in the domain. I ran RSOP and it says something like ''The policy engine did not attempt to configure the setting". Yifei

Hot Swap SATA Drives Problem
by Guest David Owens- 3 replies
I'm trying to use a set of internal SATA drives for backups on Windows Server 2003 SP2. The SATA drives are in hot swap trays that can be inserted into a mobile rack. The rack connects to the motherboard using a standard SATA data cable. The drives in the trays seem to work fine, but I'm having problems getting them to be hot swappable. When I took out one of the trays and inserted another to format the hard drive in it, the system reset. What do I need to do to make this work? I was assuming SATA II drives and motherboard chipsets supported hot swapping. The board has an Intel 5000V (Blackford-VS) chipset and Enterprise South Bridge 2. The mobile rac…
