shared folders don't show

I have a windows xp home computer networked with a windows 98 computer. There hasn't been any problem with sharing folders. Now, most of my shared folders on my windows 98 computer don't show in the Xp network. I tried disenabling and renabling sharing, and it worked only on one folder. I think the problem may have started after I did a system restore on the xp machine. Not sure. I did login in safe mode, did a system restore and the restore was fine. However, I can't seem to rerestore the computer to another date( I would rather keep the current restored point). Suggestions? Bruce

Hello Everybody, I have WinXP SP2. I have reinstalled the entire system because my computer had become unstable because of some viruses. After reinstalling everything including Office 2003, Urdu language was not displaying well with Times New Roman font. Yes, I have fully installed Urdu language support both in WinXP and Office. I have used Urdu for very successfully for two years with same settings until the reinstallation. In Times New Roman certain character appeared as rectangles. When those characters were typed in Word 2003, it switched font to Tahoma. I searched around and downloaded a set fonts from http://www40.brinkster.com/hivelocity. This has partiall…

Allocating fixed USB com ports to devices
by Guest markp- 0 replies

Hi All, I have a problem with com ports and USB. I have some quad RS232 to USB converters, and I'd like XP to always allocate them fixed com port numbers, say 4 to 7, as they are used with other applications such as terminal emulators and chip programmers that have been pre-set to use those com ports. Is there a way of doing this, or is there a management program available that can be used to easily move com port allocations around? Thanks! Mark.

64-bit still memory limited?

I'm probably out of my league, but when did that ever stop someone from posting. (Yes, there is a question at the end of the post.) [Note: Also posted in General Discussion.] Computers have three main buses: Control Bus Data Bus Address Bus Control Bus is 16 bits wide and tells the address bus what method of communication is required (32-bit or 48-bit)for the device currently seeking to control the data bus. Data Bus is 64-bits wide, but typically cannot find anything to talk to wider than 32-bits other than the main processor which for most systems is also working in 32-bit mode. Address Bus is 48-bits wide and typically operates in one of two m…

I am having a problem getting XP Pro to install............ I format the HD, the install runs through fine, and then I get a BSOD with an error telling em remove any newly installed hard drives, or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. The stop code is *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF8A80528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I have tried different hard drives, different IDE cables, ran Memtest etc and still cannot get past this screen. Any ideas what is left to try? I don't have another PC with a floppy drive, so I…

I know from scouring through microsoft that 'Items deleted from a floppy disk or a network drive are permanently deleted and are not sent to the Recycle Bin.' Is there anyway to bypass this through scripting and have items deleted from a network share go to a specified folder.

keyboard shortcut using a single key (without ctrl+alt or winkey)

I know that one can assign keyboard shortcuts in windows. But they are all assigned as ctrl+alt+<key> or winkey+<key>. Is there a way to assign just a single key to do a specific task? For example, I don't use caps lock at all, so I would like to assign it to do something else. Thanks

Howdy- Is there any way to move from a current, single production Terminal Server to something like a two server cluster? I'd like to have some more fault tolerance and the ability to independently reboot the systems without causing problems for users... And NLB seems like it only handles network loads and not CPU or memory... TIA, BM

How to limit drive allocation to Temporary Internet Files for all users
by Guest Structured Chaos- 2 replies

I just audited the profile directory sizes on my TS server and found that many of the Temporary Internet Files directories exceeded 2GB in size each. I am aware of the policy setting "Delete temporary folders on exit" and have that set but it does not always do what its supposed to. For that reason I wish centrally administer a specific allocation of say, 15MB, and then disallow users to change it. I know I can turn off modification by using "Disable changing Temporary Internet files settings" but there doesn't seem to be a way to globally set the allocation limit. TIA

tiny display and icons
by Guest heather- 2 replies

Hi; this problem is driving me nuts; perhaps someone can help me? My partner has a Dell laptop, with a widescreen, running XP (SP2). It has pathetically tiny icons and all the displays are either little teeny centered or else on the left of the screen (on IE and Windows apps). Changing the display settings only makes the screen fuzzy, and also then centres the whole window, so there are black lines to the side. Changing the dpi doesnt help either (fuzzy).

But I can share the local printer at TS Server 2003 when the client's OS is 32 bit Server 2003. What can I do to share XP's local printer at TS Server 2003. Please give me a solution. Thanks a lot
