Power Meter - bogus On-Battery indication
by Guest George Neuner- 5 replies

Hi all, Got a weird problem with an XP Pro desktop and a new APC Backups ES 750. I'm using the Windows UPS service and connecting the UPS to the computer via USB (plugged in directly - not through a hub). AFAICT, the UPS service is correctly configured for a USB connected BackUPS. About 20 to 30 minutes after the computer is started, the battery icon suddenly appears in the tray. In the Power Options applet, the UPS tab shows the system running on AC power. At the same time, the Power Meter tab shows the system on battery with 100% remaining. The battery meter does not drop over time - it remains pinned at 100% but keeps insisting that the power source …

Blue Screen Windows 2003 Std. R2
by Guest Anthony Smith- 1 reply

Good Morning Everyone, I hope everyone is doing well today. I have a Windows 2003 Std R2 Server that is being used as a web server with IIS. Something strange is happening to this server. When I move the mouse to de-activate the screen saver, I get the usual Workstation Locked screen and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to unlock the workstation. Well when I give it the 3-finger salute, it takes a few minutes THEN the prompt opens up for me to enter the password. I enter the password, the logon screen disappears like it is logging on and all I see is a blue screen. No error message, but I see the mouse cursor on the screen I can move it around the screen but not…

USB Audio driver problem
by Guest aggress- 0 replies

I'm using a Generic USB Skype phone, which work fine except a problem of it's driver. Once I plug the USB, Windows find my phone and assign the driver "Generic USB Audio device" for it, I can set to use this device in my Skype, but it also become the default audio device for my windows, all other sound come out from this device. I go to control panel, switch back to use SoundMAX as default. But problem persist after windows reboot. Everytime the USB audio device is plugged or plug before boot, the default Audio device will change to Generic USB Audio device automatically. Anyone can't tell me how to set the default audio device to SoundMAX?

Hello, I bought a new notebook from Fujitsu Siemens, and it came with Windows Vista. I installed it, but it seems that lots of our softwares aren't working correctly anymore (I'm a developer). Therefor I formatted the thing, and installed Windows XP. Since I had to do it "quick", I used a copy of a Windows XP SP2 CD at one of my customers. Now it seems that this copy isn't "Genuine", so I can't install any updates and stuff. I'd like to make my Windows XP Genuine, but I can't figure out how! I contacted our supplier, and he told me that Microsoft allows downgrading from Vista Business to XP Pro. I had to use a normal Windows XP SP2 CD, and install it, and …

Question about a 2003 Terminal Server
by Guest BigMark- 1 reply

Hi All I need to move a server running TS in application mode from an old Win2k domain to a new 2003 one. The TS is joined to a Win2k Small Business Server at the moment, but I'm installing a new 2003 SBS box. The TS server is a DC and is the License Server. My question is does the TS licensing stuff become part of Active Directory (i.e. will it stop working at the domain change) or will the machine happily integrate to the new 2003 domain? I was going to do a "Swing Migration", but there is too much change between the old Small Business Server and the required config of the new 2003 unit. Has anybody else done this?? Thanks Heaps BigM…

connecting an eSATA hard drive
by Guest BeasleyM- 7 replies

My notebook has an eSATA port but there's no documentation on how to use it. Connecting a drive to this port elicits no action from the notebook; plug and play does nothing. However, the drive can be added using the Disk Management utility on the control panel. The down side is I can find no way of removing the drive short of rebooting and removing the drive prior to XP starting up. I've tried turning of caching but XP still hangs whenever any software tries to find the drive that was there. So this is an unworkable solution for a notebook in my mind. I can find noting on the Microsoft website mentioning eSATA. Ditto for the notebook manaufactur…

We recently ran ntbackup on a Windows 2003 x64 server, and backed up the (system) C: drive and systemstate. Then we used ntbackup to restore this data onto an external drive (F:) with the intent of using it as a boot device replacement for our C: drive. (Yes we know other changes would be needed to F: before attempting this.) However, when we checked the restored data on the second drive, registry files in F:\WINDOWS\system32\config were missing. Also, when starting the restore, we receive the warning message: "Not all system state data will be restored when re-directed to an alternate location. This is an advanced restore option which may aid in recoveri…

I hit an unknown key and suddenly a 2" x 4" square is magnified centered on the cursor (NOT the 'magnifier' across the top of the screen.) Which key enables and which key disables this option? Rebooting seem the only way to disable this magnifier.

I have a garden variety machine i use at hope that is dealing me fits. Intel perl 865 mB, celeron 2.6 512 ram, ati all in wonder 9600. the machine keeps wanting to think its lost its XP activation and asks to call MS to reactivate. It has done this so many times MS would not reactivate it and issued a new number. It did it again today and would not reactivate using the 800 auto dial. It did reactivate manually over the phone the old fashion way. This was a complete legit XP pro software. What could be causing this behaviour? Bob
