Dual boot Vista & XP
by Guest Sam Crawford- 6 replies

I'm trying to figure out how to dual boot Vista and XP. I have XP Professional x64 on disk 0, partion 1 and Vista Ultimate x64 on disk 1, partion 2. XP was installed first. After I installed Vista, it shows both Vista and XP in Vista's boot menu. When I try to go to XP, I get the error message that "NTLDR is missing" and error code 0x0000225. I tried using EasyBCD to change options but still can never boot into XP. Vista sees the drive it is installed on as "D" and XP on drive "K". Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Sam Xposted to x64 and Vista newsgroups.

DCPROMO Missing?
by Guest homeboarder8- 3 replies

Currently I am running Windows Server 2003, it is on a workstation setup. When I try to setup the server to be a Primary Domain Controller (Start-Run-dcpromo) It says "Windows cannot find 'dcpromo'..." So I did a search for dcpromo.exe... nothing. Is there another way to change from a workstation to PDC? Any help will be appriciated. 255 characters for subdirectories
by Guest Boe- 1 reply

Hello, I noticed with subfolders, if you exceeded a certain length you couldn't copy them to other folders. e.g. shared\main clients\sales projects\year 2006 sales projects\..... Now I know my clients should be more succinct when naming folders but I don't sit over their shoulders all day watching them create subfolders. Is there a way to do anything about the limitations? If I do relax the limitations will I have problems with the workstations? Thanks PS our workstations are all XP and our servers are all 2003.

by Guest Magg- 5 replies

I am trying to use the REN command in the command prompt to rename a batch of FOLDERS in one directory. The names are all 11 digits, long mostly letters, with a number as the last character. At the moment they all have a 5 at the end of the name, but I want to be able to change this last character to any other number in one go. I can do this for a group of txt FILES named 1115,2225,3335,4445..etc by entering.. Ren U:\folder1\folder2\???5.txt ???6.txt Which will change the file names to 1116,2226,3336,4446...etc I want to be able to do the same for the folders however if i try and use the wildcard characters when changing the name of folders I get an er…

Tape Marked as Write Protected When it isn't
by Guest Charlie- 2 replies

I have a Quantum Superloader 3 LTO2 tape library running on a Dell PE 2800 with Windows 2003 R2, SP2. In Removable Storage, my LTO tape shows up as write protected when I try to move it into the Free Media Pool. The tape doesn't have the write protection tab engaged and I have never even used the tape before. I am not sure this is really a Windows problem, but does anyone have an idea what I can do about it? Thanks.

WinXP won't let me use an application to open a file ?!
by Guest Robert Macy- 0 replies

I can't get WinXP to allow me to open a file using a selected application. I want to use Scintilla's Sc1.exe to open several of the files that used to be associated with it. for example Matlab script program trythis.m used to open with Sc1.exe, but now WinXP won't let me open it that way. I can still open the Sc1.exe application, then find the file and open the file. But why can't I simply double click like I used to? I went to tools options and deleted the .m tie. Now I must choose what application opens it, but... So I click to open the .m file and get the browse, find Sc1.exe, but nothing happens, it won't open WinXP thrusts me back into …

File Handler

Sorry for 2nd post, but last one unanswered. Probably worded too complicated. I need to know, but can not track down info, what files/libraries are called by ANY program under win2k when the ''open file'' dialog box is used in any program. The main part is done within the opening program, but something is called to get back the drives available and the files on those drives. Please, can anyone help or provide any clues. Reason. There are two types of dialog opened by programs. Newer version, with ''back'' and ''create folder'' icons etc. (where you can edit file names). This version works for me. The second is an ''older'' type with just the …
