shutting down
by Guest taipan- 4 replies

I am running a home computer with windows 2000 sp4. The problem i am having is when i shutdown for the evening it takes several times of clicking shutdown for the system to power off. There are no error messages nor any other applications that need time to close. I tried waiting 20 minutes before i click shutdown for the second time. It will only shutdown on the first attempt if i turn on my system for a short period of time (5-10 minutes) and then shutdown. Any ideas?

Windows Hangs on Splash Screen at boot up
by Guest thegull- 3 replies

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now- whenever I need to restart windows or simply boot up, windows takes anywhere between 3 to 8 minutes to boot up. It hangs for almost the whole time at the windows splash screen. I have tried sos and nogfx boot modes but it hasn't helped me determine the source of the problem. Any solution would be greatly welcomed since it makes it extremely inconvient to restart or simply shut my computer down.

I don't like being spied on and having my behavior recorded, even if my name is not attached, which, to tell you the truth, I'm pretty dubious about. I've been watching what cookies are getting set by having firefox ask each time a cookie gets put on. People have suggested things like host files and other approaches. But there is just no way to get by on the internet without letting very large companies monitor you all they want. Ebay will not work if you do not accept cookies. You can click the 10 or 11 times to approve cookies each time you click a link in Ebay. But if you refuse one, Ebay stops working. You either let them install whatever cookies they…

Routing, static routes etc. how does it all work.

G'day I've just upgraded out Firewall, Internet pipe and all connected routers. My Firewall is Checkpoint on a 2003 Server. It has 4 interfaces (Internet, LAN, DMZ and other Org) I'm having some big problems and it all seems to be reated as to how routing works on 2003. Before the upgrade I had a small number of static routes to send external traffic to the correct path and that was it. I didn't have default gateways defined on the network cards either. Now I have to have a default gteway assigned to my Internet interface and I've had to include a number of Static Routes to my internal network. I've been trawloing the web for some accurate info on …

XP Search Engine SUCKS
by Guest BeeGee- 12 replies

Hi and thank you for looking at my posting. My O/S is Windows XP Home Edition SP2 with all MS updates to date. Clicking - - Start / Search For Files or Folders / and using the option "Search for files or folders named:" does NOT look in any Windows directory without specifying the EXACT directory using the Browse option. Why is this? Are there any Registry settings that will broaden the SEARCH to include all Windows directories when searching local hard drives C, for example? I wish XP was more like 98SE and other lesser O/S that searched the whole local drive including all Windows directories (without additional user intervention and key stokes) …

Hi a friends computer wouldn't reboot. After Chkdsk removed error she now gets the message windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupted. She has a dell computer with no CD. I think her system is one of those that has a partition with the files for brining the computer back to factory state. we want to try and retrieve the damaged system without doing that.
