I downloaded a driver from Windows updates that caused my machine to freeze up. Consequently I had to uninstall driver and reinstall the old one. Now Windows Updates shows that its driver is downloaded but not yet installed. I would like to get rid of it permanently, but it's not showing up in add/remove programs. Can I do it some other way?

Hello everyone, I have a middle-tier server which has quite a lot of ODBC-DSN entires, connecting to all our R&D databases. My problem is that the ODBC Administrator does not provide an option to change/update the actual ODBC driver for a connection. After upgrading, e.g. Oracle 9 to 10 i need to change all existing DSN setting to use the 10g Driver. How do i do this without removing all and re-entering? I tried changing it through the registry, but apperently this doesn't work as well as i thought. Thanks

I have always had sound on my Dell Dimension XPS running Windows XP Pro, SP2. A couple of days ago, all sound ceased! I can't hear sound in browser videos ... not in CDs played on the CD drive .... not the Windows sounds. I've tried several repairs and a system restore to last week, but no change. I am also getting an error when I try to synchronize my clock. Are the problems related? HELP!! Has the sound card died? Has something been switched off or de-selected??? HELP!

I have yahoo messenger in my PC. I used it for years. Last week it stop working somehow. I do not know why. When I click on the program, nothing appear. I try to download and install it back but it fails installation. Do you know what reason is? How do I recover it. I did try to recover the system but it does still not work. Thanks

When I run disk cleanup from the properties menu it hangs up when it gets to the "old scandisk files". Whaat can I do to get it to run properly?

A few days ago, I could not boot my computer - error message - \windows\system32\config\system - file missing or corrupted. Somehow I got a command prompt - DOS mode - I cannot remember exactly how I did this but perhaps starting in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I had printed some instructions from Microsoft's site about how to recover from this error message problem. I located the above file - could not copy it to move it elsewhere. I renamed it. I went into the \windows\repair folder and found a file named system.bak - there was no file named just \windows\repair\system as the Microsoft instructions suggested. I copied that system.bak file with the …

In addition to the standard A & C drives, I have an additional HD partitioned into drives D & E, plus I have 2 additional removable disc drives F & G. Occasionally, I add an external HD (USB) for backup purposes. Initially, the external HD was set as the H drive. Somewhere along the way, my comp decided this drive should be the I drive, and added a new mysterious removable drive which it decided to call H. The H drive now insists I should inset a disk every time I try to do something with it. How do I get rid of this H drive, and get my external back to being the H drive? Win XP SP2 Dave

Hi, My company have a few hundreds of Kiosk with operating system windows xp sp2. The Automatic Update is on. All the Kiosk cannot access internet, only LAN. So effectively cannot automaticly update itself. All the XP have been activated before. Running for a few months without problem. Then sometimes some computers would pop up a message "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on". Why is the problem occur? Any method to fix it? Thanks. I plugged in a USB CompactFlash card reader and it didn't install correctly. I later found that the card was not completely inserted in the reader and I believe that caused the reader to not install correctly. I then inserted the card completely into the reader and tried to get it to be recognized and automatically installed in XP. No dice. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB Controller and Hub. Nothing has worked, I even did a repair install of the OS. I KNOW the USB port and reader hardware work because it worked fine when I booted into an Ubuntu LiveCD on the same machine... it must be an XP software problem. Is there somewhere in the re…

A Download exe.exe folder with a string of numbers for a name. When I try to delete it access is denied. Even logged on to the administrator account. Having installed something is there no way I can remove it?

I have tools/internet options/connections set to always dial this connection, but clicking on IE does not dial out. (I have Google as home page) I get the message that the page is offline.

Hi, I have one DC and 3 member servers. I have applied service pack 2 on the three member servers and finished in less than 20 minutes. However, when I did on the Domain Controller last August 11 the installation still is for more than 24 hours. I have stopped and reverted to the old settings and did it again yesterday, August 13th. Three times it prompted me that it was not able to backup cpu.inf, xpob2k3.dll and dxdiagn.dll. After 24hours of running, it prompted me that it was not able to find adminpak.msi. Even though, I've pointed it in the right direction, it was still not able to find it. I've tried a series of retries and it push through and to date, …

I defrag Win 98 from Safe Mode. After it finishes, it starts again by itself and then stops saying I have to run scan disk. Scan disk then shows "no errors". What could be going on here?

I've read some of the postings about this failure mode. This just recently started to happen intermittently, now it is pretty reproducible. If I put my computer 9 ( XP with the latest updates ) in Standby mode the LAN will not be functioning when I restore operation. I have to turn it off, unplug the power cord and wait 5 minutes before I can reboot it and have LAN. I saw someone posting about a bad battery. My motherboard is about 3 years old, so the battery could need replacement, but its hard to see why this would have an effect. The battery seems to be working. Any ideas would be helpful. Arnie
