Can someone outline the steps that I need to take to uninstall win 98 and the boot screen that gives a choice. W98se is on my C: partition and Xp is on my D: partition Can I simply erase the windows folder on C:? I think I was previously advised to rename C:windows to say c:windows98 and wait a while to make sure nothing was amiss. I seem to recall there is a batch file boot something that I also need to amend. I also am giving this computer to my wife to use. How do I change the reference from my name :ie Gordon to Judy?

Can't boot into Safe Mode
by Guest thomas- 16 replies

I have Window XP Home Edition SP2 installed on a Dell Inspiron 1300 notebook. While I was online, AVG popped up to inform me that it had detected a virus located in C:WINDOWS/system32/DRIVERS. (I regret not paying attention to its name.) I selected sending the infected file to AVG's VAULT. A second message informed me that removing a system file might cause my computer to not operate properly. I confirmed that I wanted the infected file sent to the vault. Then another message appeared (that I have never seen before) telling me that the vault was full. (It had not had much in it, the last time I looked.) The computer locked up at that point. (The cursor moved, but…

How to change Keyboard layout on startup / logon screen
by Guest Gerrit Horeis- 3 replies
Hi NG, I've installed Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition on a server as english version. In my personal account I set the language and keyboard layout to german. Because this server should become a Terminal Server for people speaking and writing in different languages I want to make the keyboard layout for the login screen changeable. Is it possible? How do I achieve that? Now there is a litte "EN" box in one corner of the login screen, but I cannot select another value.... Who knows a solution? Diskeeper boot time defrag?
by Guest George Neuner- 5 replies
Hi all, I've got a Thinkpad running XPpro that won't perform a boot time directory consolidation defrag under Diskeeper 9.0.532 (Yeah, I know I should upgrade to v10 but I've heard some horror stories about it). When I run the boot time defrag, it *appears* to work saying it is moving the directories (MFT and page file are already contiguous) ... but when the computer reboots, XP says it encountered a "problem" and gives me the boot menu. I choose normal start and XP runs Chkdsk - which finds no problems. After I log in, I go into Diskeeper and analyze the disk to find that absolutely nothing has changed - all the directories are, AFAICT, exactly where the…

Unable to access Help and Support

When I click on the start menu, and then Help and Support icon nothing happens. Is there any way I can restore this function? System Restore is not an option. Also is there a way that I can inform Windows to shut down automatically? I have to hold in my power button for about 3 seconds now, when informed that it is safe to shut down.

Hi, I'm having trouble mounting an image when signed in as a Power User. I've had a look in secpol and gpedit but can't seem to find any settings that would be of some help. I am able to mount the image when logged in with admin privilages so I don't think the software is at fault. Software I am using is PowerISO. Regards Pete

Holes in pst file
by Guest Michel- 5 replies
Hello, I am using Outlook 2003 for a while now, and have a question about it. The pst file is actually a big document, in which the separate mails are stored. If you remove a mail you get a hole in the pst file. And I mean space in the pst-file that has no actual mail in it, but takes space on the harddrive. I was wondering what you need to do to remove these holes from your pst file. Am I correct in assuming the pst file is the archive of Outlook? So archiving is not the way to go? Michel PS. I searched for both Outlook, 2003 and Office as newsgroup. As I could find none, I posted this post in General
