XP SP2 boots from cold following hibernation
by Guest mark.bitrot@gmail.com- 1 reply

I've recently been having a strange problem with my laptop (running Windows XP SP2). When I put it into hibernation, it all seems to work OK (the Hibernating progress bar appears, runs right to 100% and then the machine powers down). However, when I switch back on the PC boots from cold rather than resuming from hibernation. This has only started happening in the last few weeks, before which hibernation used to work fine. Things I've installed recently include Office 2007 Small Business Edition, Windows Desktop Search 3.01 (for instant search in Outlook) and ActiveSync 4.5. I've now uninstalled WDS but the problem still persists. I've trawled Google and the …

Hi I've got an old PC (HP Pavilion 8756C) with Windows XP Pro, installed on top of Windows ME 7 years ago. It's been kept in great shape. I never had a serious problem with it until last week when I noticed that one of the CD Drives is not loading up right as follows: * When I start/restart Windows, all basic programs load up exept for one: CD Drive N:\ [the secondary CD Drive] -most of the time- doesn not. Its not being recognized as a system disk (Meaning, when I go to My Computer, Its not there), I only see: LOCAL DISK (C:), CD Drive M:\ , and the 3½ Floppy (A:) . And, when it does load up, it could be seen on: 'My Computer' but, it either causes my…

Volume changing problem

Hi! :-) Every time my mp3 player (Winamp 5.35) goes from one mp3 to the next, my comp's volume setting drops drastically. Specifically, the Wave setting in the Volume Control that's opened from the system tray drops from 100% down to what I figure to be about %17 percent. The problem is making it very inconvienient to listen to my mp3's. How do I get it to stop doing that, to lock it in place, so to speak?

Hi all.. I have been using Windows ME for about 4 years now without a problem and like it alot.. but I'd like to use a different browser besides Internet Explorer. I seem to get lots of error msgs on it now.. and more recently an "Operation Aborted" message, even during something simple like going to Google. I was wondering what is good browser to use with Windows ME? Someone told me Opera, then someone told me FireFox, but I dont want to start installing all kinds of stuff then have problems later on or conflicts with other programs. I also saw one called "Avant", I've never heard of it before and was wondering also if anyone knew anything about it? T…

Hello: I need to make a boot CD for Windows XP Media Center Edition. I do not have the Windows operating system CD. I looked for instructions on Microsoft.com and the instructions were so long and convoluted I gave up. Does anyone know of a simple way to make a boot CD? Thanks in advance.

Copy millions of files in Win XP
by Guest Rickster21a- 3 replies

I have used File Scavanger to recover a hard drive partition that had a corrupted MTF, to a fresh hard drive. Now that I have reformated the original hard drive partition, I need to put them back. I am trying to copy more then 5 million small (11-15 KB) files (in 90 folders) from one hard drive partition to another. I am looking for the best way to do this . The drag and drop method does not work (it works some times if I copy only a few folders at a time), as the system gets hung up. Xcopy tends to work, unless if finds an error on the NTFS MFT, or it runs out of resources and crashes out. Is there any trick, hint, command, or 3rd party software tha…

Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager 7.0 - why should I want this thing?

I have just set up a new Dell Dimension E520 (recently discontinued) XP SP2 (by choice). It comes with this Storage Manager, presumably for a reason. Darn if I can figure out that reason. Why should I wish to use this thing? What benefits or advantages would it bring? (the Manual is strictly for techies). Many thanks

Delete ntuser.dat for non-existent user

I deleted a user in Local Users and Groups but forgot to delete the users' profile via the System control panel applet. Deleting the user did not remove the users NTUSER.dat file and when I try to delete it (while logged in as a different user with Admin rights) it always complains the file is in use. What's the best way to delete these files? (NTUSER.dat.log as well)? PC won't boot O/S

I have an old Sony PC with a Promise hard drive controller, Maxtor hard drive and another (old) hard drive. The promise drivers show on-screen, but halfway through the Win 2000 Pro boot up process the machine stops (blue screen of death) with Inaccessible boot device. Use Chkdsk /f ... I attempted to boot from a floppy or (Win 2000) CD, but that results in a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I looked in the BIOS to make the boot order: removable devices, then CD, then hard drive. The floppy I have contains the following hidden files: boot.ini ntdetect.com ntltr I can access the BIOS. It shows the correct time and har…

An external portable drive shows at drive "E" with no problems. Can you tell me what I need to do to get the additional letters to show? Thanks for anyone's help. I mistakenly posted this to the Media Center Edition earlier. I hope I didn't cause too much trouble. Jim -- JD

Volume Label Names Forbidden?
by Guest Sparkybill- 1 reply

I just got through reinstalling XP because of lack of space on my C partition, so I reinstalled most programs on the D drive. In Windows Explorer this resulted in some confusion (to me) of volume labels so I renamed the C drive "Operating System" (which seems to be acceptable to the computer); but I also renamed the D drive "Programs 1". After closing My Computer, I have been unable to find the D drive again, either in My Computer or in Computer Management. I assume my choice of label was a no-no. Is there any way to recover the D partition (drive) short of reinstalling XP? -- Sparkybill
