100% CPU Utilization with Web Browser
by Guest jl- 3 replies

All: Have a situation somewhat similar to other 100% CPU Utilization questions though mine seems to occur any time I run Windows Explorer now. The moment the browser starts the CPU Ute spikes to 100% and can sit there for a few minutes-thereby essentially freezing almost everything. This may have started some time back in my case and I'd initially thought is was performance degredation on my DSL line-except another machine upstairs on Vista RC1 runs like a top. Keep in mind this is Win 2K running on a PII-233 I built in Jan 1998 so it's had a long life but still? While I plan to build a new PC by end of year when another new wave of CPUs has been …

Computer browser not in Services list
by Guest Boe- 1 reply

Hello, A client couldn't attach to the workgroup so I went on their xp workstation as an administrator and tried connecting via IP - it couldn't. It could ping the ip though. I right clicked on my computer, when to change the name of the workgroup (I've seen workstations pop out of a workgroup for whatever reason over the years). The workgroup area was grayed out. I went to services to check on the computer browser and it wasn't listed. I tried to manually run the computer browser but that didn't seem to help. I'm not sure how to fix this short of reformatting the PC. Thanks

Antivirus recommendation 1 2
by Guest John- 28 replies

Hi I need recommendation for an Antivirus for win xp. In the past I have avoided Norton Internet Security as it seems to take too much system resources and slows the pc down. I have always used Norton Antivirus, while for firewall I use win xp built-in firewall and router firewall. For spy ware I use Windows Defender. My question is can I move to the Norton Antivirus 350 without putting too much strain on resources or is plain Norton Antivirus still better for reasons I have described above? Many Thanks Regards

Why does my IE always have an error: "it needs to be closed and preparing an error report" or "it's not responding" and there's an END NOW button? The same with my other programs, whenever I shut down my computer, the "not responding" message appears about the program I just used.

Is it possible to construct an executable file that will run from Windows XP that will launch a VB script in Excel at regular intervals? Ideally, I would like to be able to assign this .exe program to Windows Task Scheduler in order to send data to other programs at assigned times. Many thanks.

IE 6 Problems

Hello, I have several Windows 2003 Enterprise servers. On one of the servers IE 6 is acting oddly. I can open a home page on it (internal or external), but getting beyond that the issue. If I type a new URL in the URL field, the old URL remains, and the browser just seems to sit there, but the process is taking up resources. If I close the IE 6 window, another will appear with the site I had newly typed. DNS is fine, no issues with viruses, adware/malware. I think IE6 is somehow corrup and I'd like to just do a re-install. Is it possible to uninstall/re-install IE6 on a server? I cannot use IE7, as this is a terminal server and IE7 is not su…

Proxy GPO is not applying. Ideas??
by Guest JT- 0 replies

Hi All, Having a real bugger of a time applying a proxy GPO setting either to user or computer. Publishing the GPO from a windows 2003 native domain to xp sp2 clients running ie6. The policy is applied as it should be but the computers are not picking up the proxy configuration and applying it to IE6. All other policies work fine. There is no policy in place that can/will effect proxy settings in this case. I have seen these problems posted by others but have not found a solution. Any ideas? Thanks

Auto Logon Shift key override does not work

I am trying to set up my machine to automatically log on to a user account. This works fine, but sometimes I need to log on to a different account for admin tasks etc. The problem I am getting is that holding the shift key during boot up does not bring up the windows logon screen. Windows automatically boots to the account I set up to automatically log on. I am using Windows XP SP2 and my auto logon registry settings are as follows, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "DefaultUserName"="testUser" "DefaultDomainName"="" "DefaultPassword"="Password" "AltDefaultUserName"="" "AltDefaultDomainName"="" "AltDefaultPasswor…

Log on to old desktop with domain server long gone

Hi, I'm trying to gain access to an old windows server 2000 (not Domain Controller) we have standing around the office. It hasn't been used for 2 years or so but is still running. I can get local adminstrator access on it, but I can't logon to the profile that i need. The profile belongs to a Domain User (who is a member of the local administrators group). The domain controller the domain user belongs to, was discontinued last year. The new domain controller has a different name. How can I gain access to this profile/domain user? I don't just need access to the files, but rather the installed programs and settings. Thanks in advance for any pointers you…
