W2K/EX2K3 to W2K3/EX2K3
by Guest Alfred- 1 reply

I have a domain where the DCs are running Windows 2K3 but I have an Exchange member server running W2K with Exchange 2K3 Enterprise. I would like to upgrade this Exchange server so that it is running Exchange 2K3 on Win 2K3. Can someone point me to a reference guide for this? Also, should I perform a clean install of Win 2K3 first on the server and then reinstall Exchange 2K3, or should I do an inplace upgrade? I prefer clean installs, as they're, well, cleaner, but is this a more difficult path? Thanks.

Slow backup performance
by Guest mwd- 4 replies

We have a few volumes getting backed on a server running extremely slow throughput during the backup. If we create a new volume on the server, then copy the data from an existing volume, it is MUCH faster on this new volume. If you restore the same data from tape to the new volume, it is still slow. So copying the data works, but just restoring the data does not. We'd like to find the issue without have to recreate all of our volumes, if possible. We're thinking something with the ACLs maybe, but can't pinpoint the exact problem. Any thoughts?

I have Vista Business 64 bit. I noticed that there's a program files and a program files x86 directories on the hard disk. I have read that 64 bit software will be installed on the program files and 32 bit software will be installed on program files x86. My question is there really any difference except to group the 32 and 64 bit software together? Can I install a 32 bit software on the program files directory and vice versa? Will there be any probelms. Thanks.

I must be missing something? Here is my problem: I had several users that were part of the Domain Admin group and they have Roaming profiles with a mapping to a specific folder to work in. Recently I took them out of the Domain Admin group and now they can not get their roaming profile nor access to their working folder (mapped drive)? I DID NOT CHANGE THEIR ROAMING PROFILE. When I add them back to the DomainAdmin Group - ALL IS PERFECT?? The sharing permissions I have is for evryone - FULL CONTROL. WHAT AM I MISSING???? THX

Hi, just recently my Task Bar (you know, the strip at the bottom of the screen with the clock etc.) has started to disappear. It usually happens when the laptop has gone to standby and I "waken it up" - suddenly the task bar has gone!!! If I restart the laptop it comes back again,,,, and it may stay for a while (even after going into standy/wake-up several times) but will disappear again within a day. Any adeas on what is going on here??? Frustrated of Aberdeen!

Time server
by Guest Jarryd- 2 replies

Hi, Why is it that even after I change the time on all PDC's, all servers for that matter, then successfully sync all time clients on the network thus updating their clocks to the correct time does the time slip back to the skew of five minutes that I had just corrected. How do I ascertain who the timer server for the domain is and where that server is getting its time from? I don't want the time server to ever update its time. TIA, Jarryd

Preparing and restoring disk image...
by Guest Jake- 2 replies

Hi, We have a datalab with 20 Dell and 20 Compaq computers. Both of these product lines have completely equal hardware. We have made a 'standard' install for each of these two types with drivers, applications and settings. Now we want to sysprep each of them and save the two images to a file server for easy restoring later on. First about sysprep: Does it erase the WSUS client ID stuff too, or do I have to do this manually? Should the workstation have workgroup network connection when sysprep is run (it will be added to the domain during the first startup). Is it possible to specify everything in the sysprep ini file except for the comput…

Set dual-monitor layout (placement) and resolution from command line?
by Guest ajkessel- 5 replies

Cross-posted from microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support after no response there: I posted this earlier inquiry <http://tinyurl.com/26wvsn> regarding lost monitor settings across reboots but got no replies. Here's aquestion about a different approach: Is there any way to set the relative positions of dual-head monitors and the resolution of each from the command line (i.e., with a batch file)? If I can't get Windows to remember my monitor settings across reboots, I'd at least like to be able to run a quick batch file to reset my settings. Is there some way to do this?

Windows 2000/2003 - Com Surrogate, and COM+ Dump Problems
by Guest Jody Greening- 1 reply

We are experiencing a significant problem surrounding COM+ on our clients productions servers. We have been investigating this for quite some time now, and answers are few and far between. We cannot seem to get a valid dump from the machines either, and this adds to the frustration with this problem. There are some COM+ Rollup Packages available have these solved the issues for anybody here? And how can we access these items as quickly as possible? Here are examples of the errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: COM+ Event Category: SVC Event ID: 4097 Date: 8/8/2007 Time: 3:47:44 PM User: N/A Computer: NAUSTNA-SRV019 Description: The run-ti…

My son recently changed the resolution settings some how on our windows xp laptop with service pack 2. When starting the computer after the windows splash screen, the monitor goes black. I can press enter after a little bit when I know it is asking for user log in and it boots up but still have a black screen. I have tried the function keys with the external monitor setting and that isn't it I went into safe mode and changed the monitor settings and when I r…

NTOS File Removal: Can't Login
by Guest a144mb- 4 replies

I'm running Windows XP, SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 8200. It's a standalone (Workgroup; not on a domain) machine that's PHYSICALLY connected to a Linksys wireless router at my home. I read that an 'ntos' file is a virus. It was on my laptop. I ran Hijackthis.exe (third party virus file remover) on my laptop because I kept seeing this file called 'ntos.exe' in C:\Windows\System32. I also ran Killdisk.exe (third party virus file remover) to remove the file upon bootup. My OS continued to hum right along perfectly. The final thing I did was go into 'regedit' (the registry) and systematically find/remove ALL references of 'C:\Windows\System32\ntos.exe' from my regi…
