need a good backup method or program
by Guest Daniel - Sydney- 17 replies

Hi I have XP Pro, having just survived a major crash, and losing data since the last backup, 5 days, I need to set up a daily backup that my wife can run at the end of each day, she takes care of the business end of things, I need to have an icon on the desktop that can be double clicked and it runs, is there a program out there that can do this that won't take over the PC and load a lot of stuff I don't want, I tried to set something up with Windows backup but it does not run automatically for some reason. All help appreciated regards Daniel

When, I connect any USB device to my HP WindowsXP causes it to shut down and reboot. And then, when it starts again it gives me the message "Windows has recovered from serious error" ... Is there any other solutions than formatting and reinstalling WindowsXP? The following steps I already did, but not working 1) For about five seconds or so before it shuts down it gives me the message from the system tray saying "USB device detected" like any normal windows then it goes black screen at once! 2) I connected the USB devices to different USB ports that are directly connected to the motherboard 3) I've already updated motherboard bios. 3) I've already remov…

W32time and moving operations master
by Guest justmark- 2 replies

I've built a new DC and made it my operations master. The old DC was configured for time updates from time.windows.com but that didn't seem to work very well. Anyway, I want to make my new operations master point to an outside time source - what do you all recommend as this source? Also, how should I go about making my old operations master point to my new operations master for time synchronization - just delete all of the entries pointing it outside? Thanks! Mark

I had to do a system recovery on a Compq and now I missing around 90Gb on my hard drive. Does anyone know how to fix with out doing a destructive system recovery? I would had to have to back up everthing on my hard drive and no DVD burner. I just ran the system recover because I could not install XP SP2. System was corrupted but it still ran. The drive is 160 Gb and around 67 (or so) was used before the recover (round 5Gb is used for the Compaq partitions). I'm seeing this in the system directory and I also used command prompt to see if I could find other partitions, but there are none. Now, there were two user profiles made, I don't know if that has any…

Recommendation for copying Data
by Guest Scott Micale- 2 replies

I am in the process of taking 2 EIDE data drives out of my server and replacing them with new WD SATA3 drives in a Raid 1 configuration. The drive configuration shouldn't be a concern really. I just would like to know what is the best way to copy the data from the old drive to the new so that my ACL's remain the same and the share information. I am pretty sure the share info is going to have to be re-created, but I want to make sure I am correct on this statement. Right now both new and old drives are setup in the server and can be accessed. Thanks -Scott

by Guest Ezn- 0 replies

Anyone know how/why/when a folder is created in Documents and Settings that matches the Computer Name? This folder has all the default subfolders that a regular user folder would have. XP Pro, SP2. There is no user on the machine that has the same name as the Computer Name. I have tried searching "Documents and Settings" "Computer name" folder XP (and various combinations) and have not found anything. Thanks!

"Secure" approach for remote execution of commands (least priv)
by Guest msb-2007@nospam.nospam- 1 reply

Ok, I'm trying to figure out the "best" (ie: simple, yet secure) way to provide some limited remote command execution priviledges for a subset of non-admin users. We don't want to this team to be a domain admin group, but want them to be able to remotely enumerate network connections (ala "netstat -a -n -b") and the running processes on remote domain machines. We looked at using psexec for the netstat, but I don't really see a secure way to limit user rights with that approach.. if they can psexec something remotely, I suspect they'd effectively have a vector to run various applications as admin (which is pretty much the same as giving them local a…

I am in the process of reinstalling my OS. While backing up all my files onto an external hard drive, XP asks me to insert a floppy disk so that it can create a boot disk. I do not have a floppy drive for my laptop (who does these days?). How can I change the settings to use a cd, or a flash drive? Thank you for your help!
