OEM install: how to recover files from I386 folder?
by Guest Jeff- 4 replies

I have a Toshiba notebook which came pre-installed with Windows XP MCE (Media Center Edition). Some of the files were apparently corrupted causing me to hang when I use Windows update. So I contacted "Windows Support Online" and they told me to run Sfc /purgecache sfc /scannow which I did. Scannow wants to recover some files from "Windows XP Professional CD2". But Toshiba did not supply Windows XP CDs. Instead I have a folder named C:\WINDOWS\I386 which I believe is where Toshiba placed the original Windows files. How do I tell scannow to find the files there? The scannow popup asking for files does not give me the option to direct it to look an…

Redundant DC/fileserver
by Guest RLM- 3 replies

For one of our offices I need to replace their aging DC/file/print/dns/dhcp server. This is one machine and I want to replace it with 2 identical machines, so that they have some redundancy. I did some research on clustering but I don't think that's the way we want to go, because that requires an additional storage server for their data. I'm on a tight budget.. Is it possible to use Windows server 2003 R2 for this scenario ? I read about DFS replication, but is this suitable for a fileserver where sometimes lots of small files are being stored in a short period ? (I'm thinking about replication frequency, speed, etc) The big question is: how can I alway…

Backup - Fails When tape fills up
by Guest JB- 5 replies

I'm having a seriousissue using the win2003 Server Backup Utility. It was once working perfectly, but as our organization has grown so has the data we accumulate. The full backup now spans 2 tapes - which is where the issue lies. When the tape fills up, NTBackup does not ask for a second tape to be inserted, instead it just cancels the backup. The log shows 'The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted' -------- The operation did not complete succesfully -------- Once or twice it has asked for a new tape to be inserted, but this is quite rare. (And on these occasions it normally will not continue, I get the message to 'Insert Media Lab…

Strange Fixed IP Problem

Hi guys. This is a strange problem that is driving me batty. I use Sky broadband, coming off the router I have my home PC (fixed IP) Xbox (fixed IP) and work pc (DHCP), everything has worked fine for 2 years. I also have an IP phone. Now, all of a sudden, my home pc and xbox (fixed IP addresses) cannot access the net. If I set my home PC to obtain an IP address automatically, it can connect to the web fine, but if I assign it a fixed IP address, it cannot. It can still access the xbox ok and I know the router is still up and running, if it wasn't then my IP phone display would go blank. also, my work PC connects fine even when my home PC does not. Can…

Cant Apply Proxy GPO
by Guest JT- 0 replies

Hi All, Having a real bugger of a time applying a proxy GPO setting either to user or computer. Publishing the GPO from a windows 2003 native domain to xp sp2 clients with ie6. The policy is applied as it should be but the computers are not picking up the proxy configuration and applying it to IE6. All other policies work fine. There is no policy in place that can/will effect proxy settings. I have seen these problems posted by others but have not found a solution. Thanks

AutoRuns for Windows v8.71

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP. THIS is a nice feature: Autoruns' " Hide Signed Microsoft Entries" option helps you to zoom in o…

Migrating User Profiles - Windows 2003 Server / TS
by Guest Mike- 0 replies

Ok, we have a client that currently has two terminal servers. ATL-TS-01 and ATL-TS-02 ATL-TS-01 is the terminal server when 100% of the daily users (say up to 28) connect when working remotely. ATL-TS-02 is for a handful of users to use for a single application (think compliance or HR). Now here is a kicker. The handful of users that connect to ATL-TS-02 will also connect to ATL-TS-01. Their profiles are not roaming, so they have one profile with all the applications that have been installed on ATL-TS-01 etc, and their profiles on ATL-TS-02 also have local profiles with a few custom applications available to them. Also items like Office or Adobe a…

HP P3005 PCL6 printer driver
by Guest Dean- 3 replies

Hi, I was just curious if anyone has had experience troubleshooting print spooler issues with the HP P3005 print driver installed on a 2003 SP1 Ent server? What happens is the spooler service crashes or the server blue screens. This happened after I loaded the 3005 driver. I did notice in the registry at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Print Processors that there is a new key now called HPZPP4wm. It has a dll in there called hpzpp4wm.dll. I know that this is not a good thing for this to be loaded in the registry but I'm just curious if anyone has this driver loaded and what your experience is. TIA, Dean

Reinstalling Windows XP Without Disk?
by Guest Krow- 2 replies

I'm cleaning up two old PC's that run on Windows XP (Home). Like most of the PC's purchased from major retailers, they did not come with a Windows XP CD to reinstall. Both of the PC's have their original Windows authentication codes (product keys). I was wondering if there is a way, since I have everything except the CD itself, to reinstall the Operating System fresh? A download link, etc... If so, please put in detail how and where... It would really help me out. Much thanks, Chris
