I am running a server with Windows Server 2003, some client machines are W2K and some are XP Pro. Is there a way of limiting certain actions by users that log onto the network. The type of things that I would like to restrict are as follows: Limit access to what's available on the 'Start' menu Restrict 'Right Click' options Restrict access to various drives Restrict ability to use .exe files Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Glenn

Windows Advanced Options Menu Upon Startup
by Guest Alex- 2 replies

When starting Windows XP Home, the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" comes up every time...as if the F8 key is stuck. It is not. I just want to "Start Windows Normally" ...not in "Safe Mode"....However, when I click on "Start Normally"..the system will not budge. So, I go to the "Start from the last known good configuration" and the system starts up and all is fine. Next time I restart the system , the "Menu" comes up again...every time. How can I get rid of this 'detour' to the "Advanced Options Menu' every time? many THANKS! Alex

The file ntds.dit corrupted and the DC can't be started in normal state. Go to AD recovery mode and tried to run ntdsutil and still can't be recovered. Can anyone help me to resolve this problem? I'd read some web info and nearly all of them are having below error message:- lsass.exe-System Error: Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Service cannot start. Error Status: 0xc00002e1. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detailed information. However, for me, the error code is 0xc00000e5 instead of 0xc00002e1. Is there …

wallpaper changer on desktops without admin rights
by Guest Richard Herb- 0 replies

We have around 3000 beautiful, politically correct, awe inspiring, uplifting wallpapers, that we'd like to cycle through each desktop in the company, randomly. We dont need all PC's synchronized on the same wallpaper. the wallpaper powertoy is perfect, but doesnt work when you take away the users administrative rights. we keep all the wallpapers on a mapped drive ( the T drive) that everyone has mapped. there must be a simple batch file that would copy a random wallpaper from T:\walp to C:\walp\approved.jpg. Once a day. Then I can just set the wallpaper to C:\walp\approved.jpg for everyone. any batch file gurus out there? thanks.. the GUI kid

We have a user who is having problems maximizing. When he minimizes any window or app, then tries to click on the corresponding icon on the taskbar to maximize it, it won't maximize. What he ends up doing is minimizing everything until he can get to the app he wants. We're running XPsp2. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this user is my boss. Thanks!

I have two w2k3 enterprise domain controller in a single forest-domain setup. Everything has been fine and working for 2 years now. We to shut all our systems down this past weekend due to electrical maintenance of the building. When we power all the servers backup, we did not have any problem except for one. We discovered that our local DNS MX record is not correct when we use nslookup to query the record. When I run the set query=mx command, we are getting the lowest priority MX record. I have 3 MX record that has an A record with the associated IP as well as PTR. When I ping each mail server IP, I get the correct netbios name but for some reason …

Windows Lock-ups.
by Guest joytym- 7 replies

Having problems with Windows locking-up and Programs "Not Responding". Computer is a Sony with Windows XP pre installed ( prior to SP2 being included ). Have recently ran the Recovery, from a partition on the hard drive, used automatic install of the updates recommended from Microsoft ( this included the SP2 ). Recall having a very similar problem when the computer was new and received advise from Sony as to how to resolve, seems to me that the process was quite straight forward but do not recall how it was done. Corresponding with Sony at this time is not providing a resolution. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank You.
