Time to stop buying thin client devices?
by Guest Rob Nicholson- 2 replies
We're running Windows 2003 Server with terminal services and Citrix Presentation Server 3, although about to upgrade to 4.5. It's becoming increasingly difficult to defend our existing thin client devices (Wyse S10s) for a variety of reasons. I'm very tempted to stop our purchase of Wyse terminals, at least the S10s because: a) Lack of USB pen drive support b) poor graphic performance c) inability to play some media format files d) much higher power PCs for a very similar price e) looking to the future and how virtualisation/SBE may change At the moment, users have to logon to a PC in the office to transfer files. This is an annoyance and as we all …

Unblocking & Reading Certain Zip Files
by Guest Ben- 5 replies

Hi, I have a user who runs IBM Business Modeler software, using this they create business models and export them as ZIP files. The user is now trying to open one of these ZIP files using the built in Windows XP zip tool, but windows is telling the user that the file is blocked, and he needs to unblock it by going to the files properties & clicking the unblock button. However this button doesn't exist in the properties of the file. The user has sent me the file, and I have tried, however I can't even see the contents of the zip file, it appears blank, and there is still no unblock button in the properties. However, if I open WinZip, or WinRar, and…

WinExplorer does not remember folder view settings ? Quantity MFT problem ?
by Guest Frank Callone- 0 replies

A time ago I setup a folder according to my preferences (e.g. "Details view") and clicked then Tools->Folder View->View->Apply to all Folders From previous WinXP systems I know that now all Folder should be displayed now as the current. Much to my surprise this is not the case. From time to time I open an existing folder and..... get an "Thumbnails view". Why are soemtimes (but not always) these exceptions? As far as I heard this can be a problem because of too many folders in comparison to the MFT size. Is this true ? How can I change the amount of space which is defined for directories? I have currently 280000 Files on a 160 GB NTFS fo…

A Couple of Novel Tricks
by Guest Tannhauser Gate- 3 replies

If you're running out fo disk space, clear the cache. It's amazing how much space is wasted by temporary files that have been copied from servers. I usually get about 1.5 GB by doing that, and it gets me out of the jam every single time. Since I learned this trick, I haven't had to clean my hard drive for months. Also, when clearing the cache to fix a routine headache, you don't need to delete cookies or clear the history. "Delete files" takes care of everything that can go wrong, and you can do the other two operations by hand. That way, you aren't obliged to delete the cookies and history addresses that you'd like to keep.

Hello, I currently have 2 office buildings each with their own dc and dhcp servers. However, we are going to connect the 2 buildings for internet purposes, but need to maintain the separate IP scopes. How can I have both dhcp servers running and have them only give a certain range of IPs for each building. Ex. Building one uses 192.168.1.x Building two uses 192.168.2.x Thanks for the help. Tom

Syncing remote servers
by Guest Jeff Viola- 3 replies

Here is what I'm trying to do. (if there is a better way let me know). I have a small domain with 1 Win2003 Domain Controller that is also the file server. Another domain controller that is the Exchange server and another Win2003 server that is used for sql and terminal services. I want to setup a remote site with basically the same setup, but I want to be able to sync the servers through a VPN. Should I setup the second site as a completely different domain and then just do a trust between them? Would this allow the users to maintain only one password? What happens when the communication is broken between the sites? Are the users and pa…

How to map a network drive whithout anybody logged
by Guest emmanuel meurant- 4 replies

Dear All, A service on a windows 2003 server needs to accès some files on an AS400 (you can think of the as400 as a Windows machine in another domain). I have to map a drive to this AS400 specifying alternate credentials not known in the windows 2003 domain. Doing this once logged with an admin account is very easy either via the graphic interface or via a "NET USE " script. But, how could I have this mapping created even when nobody logs onto the server. (the mapping has to be used by a service). Thanks for any idea, Emmanuel Switzerland -- mcse 2000 - mcsa 2003 and still a lot to learn...

DHCP Offering addresses on different subnets
by Guest MrGumby- 0 replies

I have a dhcp server that for some is offerring an IP address on one subnet, then immediately offering a device an IP address on another subnet. The network capture shows a DHCP Discovery, then DHCP Request, then two DHCP NAKs from one subnet then two DHCP NAK's from the other subnet. They are all from the same DHCP server. There are available addresses. I have restarted the service and the machine & this has not made a difference. What could be going wrong here??
