Anything that does this?
by Guest Mark G.- 4 replies

Not sure that XP Pro can do this, but if it can, then great and please explain how. If not, does anyone know of any good, free utilities that do so? What I am after is something that can do two things. First, give me a list of the last XX (being 50, 100, etc..) files that have changed including their paths and date changed. Secondly, something that will and can monitor specified folders/files for changes and then alert me via pop-up and/or email alert. I believe these two functions are something we all can use. I did some Goggling and ran across something that does the first tasks, but looked like spyware so I passed on it. Any recommendations? Thanks much…

My CPU is sometimes strangles with some process
by Guest Mario- 5 replies

In last few months my laptop sometimes become strangles with some process without any particular reason but I can't figure out which because it is uninusable so much that I can't even ctr+alt+del. I think that some malicious thing will always slow down the laptop. The other thing is that on my 3 machines the startup and shutdown time can be "too long". I know that it is relative thing but with the fresh installation of everything (always the same applications on all machines: XP, avast, winamp, bsplayer, autocad, 3dstudio, office) everything works well for a few months. After that everything slows down despite the defragmentation and all other preventing thing.

Restoring data from an old version of Windows
by Guest Sitara Lal- 7 replies

I urgently need to transfer some data files from an old PC, vintage 1992, which is mainly used to run a DOS programme. This PC came with Win 3.1 loaded and has two drives - one for 5.25" floppies and the other for 3.5" floppies. There is no CD drive (and it is not possible to attach an external drive) and no USB port of course. Does anybody have any idea on how I could transfer the data files, all of which are of course well over the 1.44MB capacity of the 3.5" floppies? I tried backing up the files using the Windows 3.1 backup utility, but these backup files (named CC21021A.001, CC21021A.002 etc) cannot be read by the Win XP backup utility. Any bri…

pop up across desktop
by Guest Steve T- 11 replies

Don't know what this is or how to get rid of it. Started popping up across my desktop over the weekend after, I think; downloaded some videos from Youtube with a converter. I have removed the program and Google's IE bar as I thought that was the problem. I have run my AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG's anti rootkit. Task manager shows it as a running process when it appears. I can shut it down, but after a while it pops up onto the desktop. It appears as an ad and sometimes just an advertisement for a product. Here it is translated with IE 6: You have an Internet site, a blog, a myspace page? You want an address short, original and sympathetic? http://www.C…

Where is the User Guide to "Phone Dialer"?
by Guest retread- 6 replies

I have installed "dialer" in my Start folder as per post under Q285920. The only info I can find about it is under Product Documentation and is very general (and short). The link to http://www.activevoice.com/dialer is a dead end. ActiveVoice doesn't have any info on their web site about it at all. This is a program that has been around since 1998, but I can't find any help on how to find the details of using it. I want to use it to dial a long list of phone numbers I have in an excel s/s. Any help would be appreciated.

Internet connection times out?
by Guest Charlie5- 10 replies

I have DSL from ATT. I must of changed something by mistake and now after a few hours of use, after a reboot, the systray will get a icon that is for connection disconnected. It appears in "Network Connections, LAN or high speed internet. Local area connection 8 disconnected. Firewalled Realtek RTL839 Family PCI Fast Ethernet ". I do not have a network and assume that this still needs to be in Network Connections? That is the item that gets disconnected and of course I can do nothing but reboot and start the process all over again. Seems like it is on a timer or I do something that activates the disconnect? Can someone advise what I should check a…

I just got my Beta DVD "Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 32 and 64 bit Beta 3". I am trying to install on a 32 bit system but I get an error that the executables are for the wont system type. Is it a typo on the DVD or is there some trick to extract the 32 bit installer? I trued to execute the setup.exe on the root, the /sources/sperr32.exe and tried to boot directly from DVD but no luck. The executable files properties displays : File Version : 6.0.6001.16510 (longhorn_beta3.070417-1740) Must I install on an x64???

SATA Support in XP
by Guest Ender14- 11 replies

I am currently running Vista Home Premium, but want to set up a dual boot with XP. The problem I'm running into is my XP Pro disc is so old it is not bootable. I attempted to create a bootable CD, but the program I used required an XP disc with Service Pack 1, which I do not have. I have the floppy discs that will allow me to install XP, but since my version is so old, will it recognize my SATA hard drive? If not, is there any way to install the SATA drivers prior to running the XP set up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
