My wife did a diagnostic on our PC, and it showed everything passing but the Network adapters. It refers us to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899868 . Trying to restore with NT Backup and it keeps telling me the drive is in use. Only thing the drive is doing is sitting there with the tape I need to restore from in it.

My neighbor gave me a bunch of left-over parts from an upgrade... (An AMD_64-3200 mobo and a few HD's 100 & 250 gig.) I built a machine from them and decided to see if the machine would boot from either of the drives. One of the drives started to boot to XP...then crashed. I slaved the drive to another machine to see what was on it...and there was no Windows (or Winnt) folder... but oddest of all...*no* root directory files...which means boot.ini is not even present... How the heck could it have started to boot XP? BTW: No .chk files were written nor did chkdsk find any problems

Hello, I'm a newbie when it comes to routing and firewalls so don't be shocked by my lack of understanding. I have a network that services extremely large files - the average is proably around 1 GB - ranging from small to 100 GB files. Their firewall has a 100 megabit interface. Their file server where they send the bulk of their data has a gigabit interface. Although they also send a good amount of data to our web server which is in a different network zone I currently have their default gateway as the firewall - should I somehow make the default gateway the file server and then make it go to the firewall (if that is even possible - I reall…

Dear Group, I have created a Visual basic program that communicates through Port 87 and works fine at work but at home I get an error: "Socket not Bound..." If I type the following: telnet 170.50.1.1 87 Could not open a connection with the host on port 87: connection failed. How can I open up port 87 to my test program? I have tried going into the network connections and opening up my firewall settings and adding a Firewall Exception and adding a Port e.g TCP 87. I just unchecked a few items under the "Startup" and "Services" tabs of MS-config. Now, whenever I open it, whether I make a change or not, I get a message after closing (unless I close by selecting "cancel") that I have to reboot for the changes I made to System Configuration to take effect. I also get a message after I reboot (or log off and log on) informing me that I have made changes to the system configuration and to check the box if I don't want the configuration utility to launch on reboot or see this message again (these messages would be normal if I had made changes). I have been unable to install new applications or upgrades to my Dell laptop running XP SP2. I've been getting the message that I have to be the administrator in order to do this. So today I started my laptop in Safe Mode, and signed on as "the" administrator to try to install PhotoShop Elements 5. It wouldn't install. I got an error message that tells me that the application has to close. When I sent the error report to Microsoft and clicked on "more information" it told me that "this problem was caused by Windows. Microsoft has no solution for this problem at this time." When I create a new account using XP Home and switch or call the new user, I get an IE script error when the new user page opens. The error is non descript and I get multiple errors as I close them out. There is really no wording int the script error. Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occured in the script on this page line: char: Error: Code: Url: The IE script error does not occur when I'm in control panel. The error occurs when I click on a user other than myself from the welcome screen or when I switch users from log off and the new user page loads. This evening I had a 'pop-up' on screen advising me that a new version of Java was available (ver. 1.6.0_02) and I clicked to enable automatic download and installation of the new version. The installaltion went fine and the new version is installed although when I check C:/Program Files/Java there are two folders:- jre 1.6.0_01 and jre 1.6.0_02 Obviously the new installation did not remove the old version of Java, therefore decided to remove the old version via Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Environment: Server: Windows 2003 R2 set as File/Print Server Clients: Mixed Windows 2000 Professional and XP SP2 (in the proccess of deploying all XP workstations) Printers are deployed with Print Management/Group Policy and the pushprinterconnections.exe script either via computer if the OU is all XP or by users if it is a mixed XP/2000 OU. I have a PC and Laptop both with Windows xp home. The laptop recognizes and will load the game, but my PC does not see a cd. I took both drives out of the system and re installed them. Can someone help understand the situation and offer a solution? Thank Larry

Hi, In the Custom section of Setting Program Access/Defaults the radio option button/line to make it default, non-default disappeared for my second browser (Mozilla Firefox), which presently non-default one. The Default is IE. 7. How do I regain this option? (The E-mail programs, Media players have those options.) Thanks sjb
