We have several users who connect to our server, using TS, over an internet connection. We have noticed that there have been a lot of users trying to get into our server, using TS. We need to secure it better and would like to know if we can use certificates, on the clients PC to authenticate them? TIA

a:\> sys c: Works like magic. Easy when you know it ;-) Thanks all. -- [from a recent mental conversation] thanatoid: So why did you decide you wanted broadband after all your endless babbling about how no one except DVD pirates really needs it? thanatoid: My ISP is offering it for less than I am paying for dial-up now AND the offer includes some other very attractive rate reductions in the basic phone service charges. And I decided I want to read my e-mail faster :-) (to be continued)

Reboot-loop problem with D-Link DWA-542 n-protocol wireless-carddrivers
by Guest no_spam_paquette@uwo.ca- 11 replies

About four months ago I purchased a D-Link DWA-542 n-protocol wireless card for use with a legacy desktop whose motherboard I had just replaced with an identical “new” (sealed in original package) Intel D845GEBV2 replacement motherboard that I bought on eBay for a reasonable price. The motherboard works fine but I have had no end of difficulty with wireless card. Various problems, including the one that I am about to describe, led D- Link support to recommend that I exchange the originally purchased wireless card for an identical replacement which I did on July 22. With the latest D-Link driver available for that card at the time, this card worked well for ab…

Why doesn't pdf file association work in XP anymore?
by Guest Catt- 6 replies

Even though my file association settings are set for a .pdf file to open with Adobe Acrobat 8 , Windows XP will not do it. Why not? It always did in the past. What has changed? As I've seen in a few other posts after a search, it's seems it's another step to save the pdf to a file then open it. I tried a system restore to a time when I knew it used to but even that did not work. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks Catt

Undeleting / recovering a file
by Guest Peter Hucker- 7 replies

In DOS and Windows 3.1, if you deleted a file, you could just undelete it again, as long as you hadn't written to that portion of the disk. What has happened in Windows XP which prevents this? I was given a USB memory stick, the owner had deleted the wrong file, and wanted it back. I tried 6 different recovery utilities, one said the file was "overwritten", the others said "poor". The most they recovered was the heading of the word document (it was 7 pages of text). So I tried a test, I got my own USB stick, copied a couple of images and a word document to it, then deleted them. Then I immediately tried to recover the three files. None of the 6 utilities got an…

70 yr old needs help - reactivating XP
by Guest Anthont- 13 replies

Wife and I are going to the States for 50th wedding aniversary. We are going to drive from Los Angeles to Washington. We intend to take a old IBM laptop and use it to download videos onto. Trouble was that it was rather full of programs which, although I deleted as many as I could, did not give enough space on the hard disk. The original XP operating system is held in a hidden sector on the hard disk but I didn't know how to get to it. What I wanted to do was to format the disk and then reinstall the OS. However I couldn't do it so I took it to the local "Guru" who done it for me. When I switched it on I was asked to "actviate" the software. When I wen…

Recovery Console crashes

XP Pro sp3. I installed RC as per instructions and on boot the option appeared. When I selected it, the RC gave messages that it was starting and then when the screen blanked, instead of the RC command screen, I got the blue failure screen. I uninstalled RC, removed the cmdcons folder and file and reinstalled. Same result. So then I used msconfig and went to BOOT.INI. That gave me a message that the path was no good, so removed the entry for me. Rebooting and reinstalling I went to RC and then got a message that hal.dll could not be found. After booting into XP again I found that the file was labelled HAL.DLL so I renamed it and tried again. That…

The recent comments regarding a 'chili recipe' reminded me of an interview I heard, years ago, of a college student credited with bottling the first gallon of jalapeno chili pepper wine. When asked what it tasted like, he replied: 'It's kinda like drinkin' electricity'! -- Semper Fi
