I'm using WinXP Media Center, the last few days I've noticed that there's some kind of d/l actitivity showing even when I'm doing nothing online even with the Windows firewall up as well as ZoneAlarm. I'm on 56k dialup. How do I determine what this is? I don't have Windows update on automatic. I ran AdAware with the latest definitions but it's still doing it. Thanks.

Roaming profiles slow login
by Guest Thorny- 1 reply

Hi Guys, I have a client running SBS2003 using Roaming profiles for about 10 users. They have been able to log on without issues for the last 3 months. Suddenly, last week, it started taking about 30 minutes to log in with a roaming profile. The DNS settings are pointing to the DC correctly and when I disabled the roaming profile and logged on locally, it only took a few seconds for it to log in. The XP SP2 pcs are receiving the following errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1504 Date: 25/07/2007 Time: 4:41:11 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: SERVICE3 Description: Windows cannot update your r…

Have you seen this software?
by Guest jim- 10 replies

I am looking for some software that will let me blank a remote server's monitor. I want the screen to still be attached, but I want to disable the monitor (NOT the video card) to keep the server more secure (I don;t want the users at the location to be able to see what is happening on the server). LogMeIn can blank the monitor while I am logged in, but the screen is shown again when I log out. Even if I choose to lock the screen on disconnects, it shows the login which clues the employees in that somebody may be monitoring the location. I just want the monitor blank - all the time - unless I choose otherwise. It seems pretty simple, but damned if …

Reinstalling XP when upgrading MB/CPU
by Guest sillyputty- 1 reply

This is a continuation of a thread where I questioned MS's instructions that require a reinstall of XP after installing a new motherboard/CPU. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125 I just started my puter after installing a Biostar 6100 mobo and AMD 4200 X2 CPU. I went in to BIOS and changed some settings, hit exit & save and WinXP started right up. It found all the new hardware, and installed/reinstalled the drivers, either from WinXP or the CDs that came with the new hardware. Everything seems fine and I didn't have to go through the headache of reinstalling XP and updating - especially since I did it recently. The old mobo/CP…

When I run the setup file of a USB Flash Disk Driver, a message on the screen informs me that the driver is already installed but a USB thumb drive that is in a USB socket is not recognized by W98. When I checked Device Manager, I see no WARNING of a problem there. You suggestions please.

IDE Controller problem?
by Guest McDermotts- 12 replies

Just recently started using this old computer since other one broke. All works ok, but seems rather sluggish. I find under device manager. hard disk controllers it lists "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller". Under that it lists "Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)" and there is a yellow circle with the exclamation point inside. Under that it lists "Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)" and no warning indicator. I tried removing the IDE Controller listing, then restarting. It says the current drivers are the best. The yellow warning comes rigfht back, also. Thanks for any help/info, Todd McD

I have two accounts on one computer and I'd like for each account to have a different resolution. Unfortunately, when I change the resolution in one account and then switch to the other account, the other account ends up using the same resolution. ie. they both seem to be using the same resolution. Is there a way I can change this behavior?

pidpropsca
by Guest Dale- 0 replies

I have been finding a file pidpropsca.dll randomly on the root of one of the hard drives on my PC running Windows Server 2003. Also, the Visual C++ runtime files msvcp70.dll and msvcr70.dll appear. The properties of pidpropsca.dll indicate that it is a Microsoft produced file but that is so easily faked that I can not be sure. And in any case, I have no clue how they keep showing up on the root of my D drive. Does anyone know anything about pidpropsca.dll? And why it keeps showing up that way? Thanks, Dale -- Dale Preston MCAD C# MCSE, MCDBA
