We are running a 2003 R2 server in application mode. Is it possible to have a English version of Windows display in Chinese (dialog boxes, titles, column headings, etc..) for certain users? We are more concerned with the windows themselves being in Chinese rather than the input. Thanks, Scott

re-installing windows xp on a rebuilt computer

I am sorry if this is a long post, but I want all the facts out. Back in 1999 I built my first computer, I loaded Windows 2000 at the time as the OS. A coupled of years later I upgraded to Windows XP with a copy I purchased from BestBuy. The computer ran great until 2005. Then all kinds if weird things began to happen. Eventually I built another computer (my 3rd) and ported all my stuff to it. I put the retired system into the junk heap and robbed it for parts occasionally. Late last year I decided to use it as the basis for a WHS Server. I put newer CPU's in it, but used the same Mobo. It was a Tyan mobo with dual P3's. I replaced the CPU's with dual 933…

SHaring a MS access frontend amongst all TS users
by Guest Jason Woodbury- 15 replies

I have an Acess front end I am trying to share with all users. I would like to know if there is a way for TS or scripting wise to implement 1 access front end and have it make a copy from a set location to every users desktop everytime they login. I am tired of having to delete every single users front end everytime it updates(which it seems to do frequently). As it stands, I have 1 copy of the front end on everyones desktop, I would like for them to be able to access a master copy and the server to automatically download a fresh copy everytime they login and delete it when they logout. Is there a way to go about this so I can simply be able to update …

This may help if plug and play devices are not recognised
by Guest AlbertTeacake- 0 replies

I had problems with this and this info may help as I finally worked out. First go to -control panel and -folder options and -view. Then click to show hidden files -ok When the new hard ware wizard runs specify location. main drive © windows inf (which is a hidden file) ok It turns out that this is where the plug and play drivers are located. Your wizard should then load the appropriate driver from this file and the device will work. well it did for me anyway. hope this helps people as getting this info was blood from a stone. like piecing together a jigsaw

Can't remotely manage workstations
by Guest Jim at SDSU- 5 replies

Help!! I have a new Domain with 2 2003R2 servers and 3 XP Workstations and 1 Vista workstations installed as a test. The install is still "vanilla" meaning I haven't set any custom GPO's etc yet. In the "AD Users and Computers" MMC, if I right click on one of the workstations and select "Manage", after about 40 seconds of Hourglass, I get the error message "Computer\\computer.mydomain.edu cannot be managed. The network path was not found." For troubleshooting purposes, the firewalls are all turned off. I can ping the workstations by name and the ping shows the correct IP's. If I try to connect using "Net use x: \\computer.mydomain.e…

Chkdsk problem
by Guest Michel S.- 6 replies

Hello, While trying to make an image of an NTFS partition, the imaging softwares (I tried with both "True Image" and "Ghost") reported that errors on partition prevented the image to be completed. For example, Acronis stated that it "Failed to read from the sector 234,439,534 of the hard disk 1", which seems high to me since there's only 29,304,934 clusters on the disk. Back into XP, I performed a chkdsk (without /F) from a cmd window, and it reported it found "minor" errors. I reentered the same command, this time with the /F switch, and a scan was planned on next boot. In this scan. chkdsk performed steps 1 to 3 and USN log without reporting…

Write Disk Caching
by Guest Eager- 0 replies

Clean install of Windows Server 2003 (x64 Enterprise Edition), not a DC yet. Copy from another local disk to the boot disk is fast as expected. After promoting (by wizard) to DC, the same operation seems to be 5-10 times slower (depending of many small or fewer large files). Tried to enable write caching (I beleive the promotion wizard disabled it) and got back the initial fast speed. This is not a setting I am very happy with because perhaps big loss may be experienced if power is lost (experience), should of course use another disk for storing "normal" data. Anyway, is this large difference what should be expected (5-10 times slower without caching) or …

Prevent Window Popup
by Guest Webbert- 9 replies

I just got involved in a production issue and believe that there is a popup window that is preventing the system from running until someone presses "OK". The only indication that I have at this point is a screen shot of an event log that shows Source: Application Popup Category: None Type: Information Event ID: 26 User: N/A No other information is available. I thought that there was a way with Dr. Watson to prevent any and all popups from displaying on a server that expects no UI. Can anyone point me in the right direction to prevent the popups from occuring? Thanks, Dave

Rename a machine
by Guest Steve Freides- 6 replies

A user, who inherited their computer from someone else, would like me to rename the machine so that his name shows up in the usual places instead of that of the machine's former owner. I've done this once or twice in the past - my memory is that it's a royal pain because so many user-specific settings get lost. I would like to keep the user name the same, just change the machine name. Because, among other things, the user use AutoCAD, I'm kind of nervous about attempting this. Thanks in advance for advice, gotchas, checklists, etc. -S-
