Desktop Icons are Unreliable
by Guest MickyMick- 7 replies

I hope someone can help: when I click on a desktop icon, a different program will often open. (I think it's always the last program that I had open.) If I click on the icon a second time, it's ok. So, for example: if I've been working in Word, then I close Word, and click on my Firefox icon, Word will probably open instead of Firefox. But if I click on Firefox a second time, it will open without a problem. I suspect that the problem has something to do with some spyware. Norton antivirus caught something shortly before this problem started. It got rid of the sypware (or claimed to), but the problem lingers. I'd be very grateful if anyone has any …

My 1999 dell computer chokes when trying to connect to the Internet. This started about two months ago, I use Dial-up networking and I have to redial up to 6 times before it will connect. I get the following: Disconnected from AT&T Dial-UP Networking was unable to complete the connection Error: 629 You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again. I stopped all virus and pop-up stoppers, tried different access numbers and called AT&T (India) multiple times over a 2 month period. Basically they said my modem drivers are out of date and I should contact Dell for an update. Dell said I have the latest dr…

XP's search parameters
by Guest bateman- 0 replies

I have a huge problem with XP lately. When i used to do a file/folder search in XP, i could get some great results, just by clicking on the top of the search page, where it says "name", or "size", or "in folder". Clicking on "name", i could have the filenames be alphabetized, from A to Z, or clicking again would make it Z-A. Clicking on the "size" would list the files from the smallest 1 byte file, to a monstrous 4gb file. Clicking on "in folder" would list the files, from folder/drive A-Z, or Z-A. For some reason, it stopped doing that. Now the files/sizes/folders are NOT being displayed correctly. Does anyone have a solution? It's making it very hard to…

This is driving me crazy...And I don't know where this would go he

OK. I just recently did a fresh install of Windows. What has been happening lately is that when I right click and select properites on a hard drive. (One in particular) The One Which Windows is installed on. I had a bunch of apps installed but uninstalled every one to return it to its original state. What annoys me is in the properities dialog on my main drive. The amount of used space is reported at 12.5GB when all the files on my main drive only total 2GB. It correctly reports that there are 99GB FREE. And If I look in the left plane in the details area before I right click its normal. How do I fix this for all drives?

by Guest shegeek72- 6 replies

I will be installing a new motherboard/CPU (upgrading from gigabyte GA- K8NS/AMD 3000 to Biostar 6100 M9 939/AMD 4200 X2) on my XP HE box. MS says to reinstall WinXP after the new MB is installed. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125 I just did an in XP repair, reinstalled SP2 and all the updates, which required the reinstall of several of my programs and hours of work, as well as some XP tweaks (from "Windows XP Tips & Tricks, Stuart Yarnnold). When I upgraded to the gigabyte GA-K8NS/AMD 3000 from an Intel- compatible MB and 2.7 ghz CPU the computer started and ran fine without any reinstallation/repair of XP. Is the procedu…

Re: Corrupted files

Re: Corrupted files I have the same problem now with JPG files. Doesn't matter what program and even old files are corrupt - about 20-30% of them. No pattern on which ones - ie. time, camera, SD card, etc. Very frustrated with this issue - no support from HP or Windows so far. I have this figured to be a Vista problem. Please let me know if you got it resolved on your computer. Thanks. "tawjr1" wrote: > > > Thanks for your help. I have SBS 2000 running with two software mirrored partitions. The first software mirrored set of drives are the C drive and contain system info. The second software mirrored set of drives is the D drive and contains data. The primary mirror of the C drive set is showing a bad block. What is the best practice for replacing it? Please include whether at any time during the replacement process the D drives should be taken off line.

explorer.exe is damned
by Guest Kento- 13 replies

explorer.exe doesn't start with windows. Thus I have no desktop icons, nor taskbar upon manually starting the explorer process manually via the Taskmanager, it either doesn't appear at all, or flashes into and out of existance repeatedly for about 30 seconds, the kills itself permanently once again. I have tried system restore, last known good config and booting into safemode. Safemode didn't work. I didn't have a taskbar or icons.. well I had the start ICON, but it didn't work. i reinstalled SP2 to no avail.. I have done a repair installation of XP Home. Still is broken. loosing my data and applications is not an option, nor is it possible to back the…

SATA HD and Dual Core Processor
by Guest Janet- 6 replies

I am contemplating upgrading my system with a SATA HD (250 GB) and Motherboard that supports dual core Processor. I will continue using XP Professional SP2. The question is: Would XP support my upgrades or do I need to download drivers from Intel's website? If so, when are these drivers installed: Are they installed at the time of installation of the Operating system or can they be installed after the OS has already been installed once. Thanks.
