Can't remove old game files.
by Guest J&D- 1 reply

I'm having trouble removing old game files, one in particular that is causing an error message during start-up. I'm not very computer savvy, so please bear with me. The message I get appears at the end of the start-up process, after the desktop and all the icons have loaded. It says, "16 bit Windows Subsystem. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application." I then have two choices, either 'close' or 'ignore'. I've traced this message back to a game we'd installed for the kids. When I try removing it through the 'Add/Remove programs…

.exe file on Desktop won't delete
by Guest Jimbo- 3 replies

I accidentally moved a small .exe file onto my desktop when trying to create a shortcut. When I try to delete it I get the message "Cannot delete XXX: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." I am the only user on the computer and this happens when no other applications are running, and it happens in normal mode and in safe mode. The program is a small game, and nothing else would use it that I can think of. I expect there is an obvious answer. Any suggestions? It's not really doing any harm but it annoys me -- Jim

Outlook Express problem
by Guest SB Mull- 4 replies

I have a new OE problem that just surfaced a few days ago. When send an e-mail, I get the usual "sending" message box, with an error message that there are problems with sending the e-mail. Then the e-mail transmits normally, but remains in my "Outbox" - I have to delete it to prevent it being sent again whenever I send the next one. This prevents me from having it automatically saved in my "Sent" file. I have checked McAfee and other installation points to no avail. Anyone have any ideas what to do next? I use Bellsouth, but can't find any reason that it is their problem, as my BS web-mail works just fine. -- Sandra

I'm trying to uninstall the Windows Live Toolbar as there seems to be a bug in the update software - it's updated the Toolbar countless number of times. However, when I try to uninstall it using the Add/Remove Programmes tool it says it can't find the file WLToolbar.msi. I've searched everywhere for it but can't find it. Any suggestions?

PLEASE HELP! My System is Hijaked!
by Guest Bryan Elwood- 10 replies

My Windows 2000 system has begun to spontaneously dial a foreign country through my dial-up modem. It occurs at random times throughout the day. If I am dialed in, the offending entity will hang up with my ISP, then begin dialing on its own. The bug will make 11 or so attempts before giving up until later. Watching Task Manager closely during an episode, there is no noticeable activity under Processes. However, I believe I have halted the bug in mid-stream by closing all instances of Internet Explorer 6, unless of course the bug simply reached its set number of attempts. My Norton AV expired some time ago, but I am up to date with Windows Updates. I did…

Microsoft certification?
by Guest Dave Candi- 6 replies

I've just finished A+ and am now certified. However I've noticed that alot of jobs ask for microsoft certification or CISCO these days. I'm just wondering what is the better out ot the two if I just want a standard i.t support job? Also would the MCDST be sufficient or would i need to do the MCSA also? I hear the MCSA is a bit more complex. Does the MCDST also teach you about the server and user accounts as alot of i.t support roles ask for these skills? Any help much appreciated. Dave Uk

Where do I get an Activation Key for Windows XP Home SP2?
by Guest Umma Gumma- 14 replies

By using PE Builder I have created an installation CD of my OEM factory installed HP Windows XP Home Operating System. As a test case I installed it to a VMware Workstation 6 virtual machine. I wanted to be sure the install would work. I accessed a piece of freeware off the internet to find out my CD key. Using that I installed it to the virtual machine. Now the installation keeps requesting an activation and tells me I have 30 days. Presumably this means that within 30 days of installation the Operating System will die. How can I now use my OEM license to activate this installation? I mean after all, I am the legitimate owner of this copy of Windows X…

DirectX End-User Runtimes (Aug 2007)
by Guest Carlos- 4 replies

Microsoft officially released an update to its DirectX runtimes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cb7397f3-0949-487b-9247-8fee451bf952&DisplayLang=en This download, and installation, should usually not be necessary. Manufacturers of games should include these updates bundled in their games in order to make them functional. The truth is that they don't do that and I have found a couple of instances when installing this MS update solved the absence of some DX dlls. Vista and XP x64 compatible. Carlos
