Any license issues with quad-core processors?
by Guest Bert Hyman- 8 replies

I recall that the standard license for Win2K allowed 2 CPUs and I assume XP is the same. How are quad-core processors treated as far as counting CPUs? -- Bert Hyman | St. Paul, MN | bert@iphouse.com

about completely removing microphone & accessibility tools
by Guest jjoensuu- 1 reply

Hi folks, a question about the Windows XP Pro SP2 microphone driver and the Accessibility Tools. Is it possible to completely remove these from the system, and if so, how? Does Windows XP come with a microphone driver or is it always a third party product, from the company who made the audio components on the particular system? As to the Accessibility Tools, the only thing I have been able to do is to get the "Accessibility Wizard" to appear in "Add/Remove Programs". But even this option would only remove the "Accessibility Wizard"; it would not for example delete the shortcuts under Start > Accessories > Accessibility. thanks in advance, JJ

Data files seen, but will not allow to copy?

I have a strange problem. A customer called me on Monday, visited him. His hard drive will not boot up, but when I attach it to an external hard drive, it will see the drive, read the read in fact. I can see all his word document files, and spreadsheet files, etc. But, when I attempted to select and copy or to even open the file in the application a message reports back stating... can't read the file, a hardware problem occurs when trying to copy it to the computer, or when attempting to open it in Word or Excel, it states the file name is not present or missing can't open? Has anyone seen this type of message before, is there a way to retrieve this dat…

Print function does not work on new printer
by Guest Guy DeStefano- 6 replies

I had a parallel connected Laser Jet connected directly to my computer. I was able to use the function ( C:\print [filename] ), and all laser formatted documents printed correctly. Printer broke, today purchased a new HP 2600n. It had no parallel connector, so I used a cat5 cable and connected to my home network. Now, I can not get ( print ) to work. The only option is /D:( device name ). I need somehow to tell the system that < HP LaserJet 2600n > is really my lpt1. This, I do not know how to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

"invalid base 64 character"
by Guest Tolstoy- 2 replies

Recently a dialog box from Spy Sweeper popped up today that says I have a bug on my computer. Mostly it contains gibberish that I don't understand. I quoted one line of it in the title of this post, "invalid base 64 character." Lately my computer has been operating very slow, and I was wondering if it has anything to do with this "bug" discovered by the Spy Sweeper program. A few days ago, I did a full reinstall of the operating system with the recovery disk that came with the computer. It didn't make any noticeable improvement. I have a 6 year old Toshiba Satellite. Apologies in advance, I'm going to cut and paste the whole Spy Sweeper message here. Is the…

User Accounts Issue
by Guest Daddio- 3 replies

Two instances of logging onto my computer has started happening: 1) I had Administrator and only Guest (Guest Off) and then all of a sudden another user account appeared all without passwords. 2) The I booted up and this time the Administrator was gone leaving this other user account and only Guest (Guest Off) all without passwords. All of this disrupted my ability to log on to the administrator side of the computer rendering the computer useless as none of my administrator side programs appeared. I went throught every possible step to recover this issue, except System Restore in hopes of finding another solution. Lastly this is XP Professional ve…

Problems booting after installing new hard drive
by Guest Flauros- 2 replies

Last night, I installed a second hard drive on my system, (making sure to set it as a slave drive). I then used the included software for that hard drive to format/partition it, and rebooted to start Windows. I noticed that during the POST it lingers for a while on certain parts that it didn't used to, and then after a while it will tell me something similar to "BOOT ERROR, INSERT SYSTEM DISK IN CD-ROM DRIVE AND PRESS ENTER". My computer came with Windows XP (Home) pre-installed when I bought it two years ago, and the manufacturer did not include a Windows CD, so I borrowed one from a friend. After inserting the CD, it briefly gives me the option to "Pres…

OK to install 32-bit XP on AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core?
by Guest Gilles Ganault- 4 replies

Hello I just bought an Acer desktop that I promptly cleaned of Vista for XPSP2. Thing is, I had a license for the 32-bit version of XPSP2. In a week, it has rebooted on my a couple of times, although I haven't installed any extra-hardware. I have a couple of questions: - is installing 32-bit XP on that CPU an issue? Should I reformat, and install the 64-bit version instead? - is there a set of utiliies, either DOS- or Linux-based that I could run from a USB key or a CD drive to stress the CPU and RAM so make sure they're OK before investigating further? Thank you.
