User Group Policy settings don't apply to Administrators?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 2 replies

I've been playing around with Group Policy on my standalone Windows XP SP2 machine tonight, and found something peculiar. I made some changes under User Configuration: - I added a logon script and a logoff script - I changed the Browser Title (this makes it so that the IE title bar will display "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by YOUR TEXT) - I set the "Remove My Documents icon from Start Menu" Administrative Template to Enabled Then I logged in as a normal user, and I confirmed that the logon script had been executed, the IE title bar showed the "provided by" text, and My Documents was not in the Start Menu. But when I logged back in as my user (who…

Hi, We got a request from a director to give everyone in our org a roaming profile. About 500 users. Some on a slow network link that we dont want to roam. We are assigning the Roaming Profiles via OU's. We use a GPO that does folder redirection. This is placed on each of the OU's with each users properties/profile tab has the Profile path set to the location on the network where the profile is stored. So this does 2 things creates a folder for each user called user data and user profiles. The user data folder stores application data and desktop. The user profile folder stores all the roaming stuff like folders, deskop as per how roaming profil…

Hi, I am using ADS 1.1 booting into Windows PE, everything works fine, ADS status shows that the node is currently running in the PE environment. My question is, how from the ADS can i map and drive and run a command from the mapped drive. I try this with the commands embedded in a batch file but it just errors out with unknown error. What exactly is the point of PE in ADS, is it actually usable? Matthew

Help!!!! Default System UI Language had been overwritten

Now my original English version of Windows XP operating system now thinks it is a non-English, probably a Simplified Chinese version. This happened after I installed a english version of Chinese 3rd-party terminal service application accompanied with a terminal access device (similar to nComputing's L110). Now my Windows XP are still mostly English-based, but all the dialog buttons are in Chinese. My search in START button failed to work (complaining some files is missing). To resolve above, I need to use Windows Update, but it complaining that my Windows setup language is of different language... I really don't wish to re-install my entire PC with a fres…

Convert user from workgroup to domain keeping settings
by Guest poppet- 1 reply

We had a new server installed some 7months ago at which time we converted from all users from belonging to a workgroup to a domain. When this was done I recall the tech guy going round each workstation logging onto domain, changing a registry setting which enabled them to retrieve the old settings they used to see when logging on as their old logon when part of workgroup. Does anyone ever remember using this tweak? I need to add another pc to domain which didn't get done @ time of change which currently has lots of programs we can't afford to loose so really would appreciate if someone could help Pete

I get all the tabs, Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings on the desk top. On the lap top I only get Display. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Robert.

The 60GB hard drive on my XP Home Edition PC came set up with C: 13.9GB, D: 36.8GB as shown in My Computer as Total Size. I am running out of space on the C: partition and would like to increase it by decreasing the space on the D: partition. Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so, how? Thank you for any helpful information. -- J150 -- J150

Downgrading XP Pro to Home
by Guest Stephen- 8 replies

Is it possible to downgrade Win XP Pro to Home, that is without starting from scratch? The reason I ask is that a student family friend needed help with her computer. The immediate problem was fairly easily fixed. However, I noticed that the COA sticker was for XP Home but what is installed is XP Pro. She has the original Home (OEM) installation disc and valid product key. It appears that someone at her college, helping when things went badly wrong, installed XP Pro with what I assume is an invalid product key. Now I know it is possible to change the product key on an installation so as to legitimise it. However, I assume that the original product key w…

Decreasing throughput & increasing CPU when writing a huge file 20
by Guest CrashHunter- 6 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Server x64 Enterprise Edition with SP2 with 4GB RAM and an application writing a huge file. The write throughput is quite good in the beginning (~33MB/s) but it keeps decreasing, while the CPU keeps increasing. In the beginning, the Kernel CPU (both in the Task Manager and the Processor\% Privileged Time in performance monitor) is pretty low, but it keeps increasing. Total CPU is ~ 50%, with Kernel taking ~8% in the beginning, while later on, the Total CPU reaches 80-90% with Kernel using almost all of that CPU; at that point, the throughput is very low. Other numbers: the System Cache (in Task Manager) reaches very soon 3.5 GB and …
