Backup vs. Sync
by Guest Janetb- 1 reply

1. What is the difference between (advantages/disadvantages) backing up files to an external HD (XP Backup) as opposed to coping them to the ext HD and sync-ing them with the originals? 2. Is there a way to use MS SynchToy without having to install .net frame? Thanks for the help! Janet

Uninstalling HP printer drivers

How to uninstall HP printer drivers correctly? My Printers and Faxes folder show few the same 'HP LaserJet 3050 Series PCL 6' printers, whereas I installed only one HP PCL6 Print Driver, and then HP USB printer driver. Does this extra Printer icons reflect real HP LaserJet 3050 drivers installed in my system, or driver is only one? In anycase, I want clean extra drivers or icons. As I know the driver files are copied to a Windows system folder(system32), and I really dont want clutter system folder with various extra drivers. From other hand, HP drivers is not shown in Add/Remove program list. How to solve this?

I have a 20 GB Western Digital hard drive that was formerly used as an external drive (slave drive) in a PC with Windows 98. I just attempted to use it as an external drive for my notebook with XP. Upon recognizing it as a new drive, XP said that it needed to be reformatted. I clicked "Yes" and it formatted and now works fine with XP. But now my Windows 98 PC will not even recognize it as a drive. Question: Is there a way to format this external hard drive (using XP, since it is no longer recognized by Windows 98), so that it will work with both XP and Windows 98? (I want to use it to transfer large amounts of data between the two.) Thanks for any id…

Regseeker

When I reformat my emachine I take all the crap off of it and then do a scan with regseeker to remove the left over entries in the registry. But if I do a search later for: Compuserve,Netscape,orICQ I still find entries in the registry. I don't understand why there are still entries after I cleaned the registry. Is it safe to delete the left over entries that I found when I did the searches? -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200707/1

Group policy wallpaper - Cached?

Hi, I´ve deployed a bitmap wallpaper to a group of machines through Active Directory Group Policy. This wallpaper is accessed through a network share. I understand that once the wallpaper is downloaded from this location, it is stored in the user´s profile (typically C:\Documents and Settings \<username>). Does anybody know if this is really so? In such case, where is the wallpaper stored locally? Thanks!

Change User Permission
by Guest jcpub- 2 replies

Our Business Manager has an upgraded version of DAC Easy. One change to the upgrade is the user needs to have administrator access. Her login to the network is a normal user with limited rights. How can I change her login settings so that she has enough rights to run this payroll program? For now I have her log off as a user and then we log her in as an administrator while she runs payroll. I am not concerned with this person having administrator rights since she is already my backup for checking the server for overnight backups and various logs when I am out of the office. Thank you.

Domain Local / Global / Mail Enabled Groups
by Guest steve- 1 reply

I am in the process of setting up a new network and am having some difficulty understanding why I would want to set up the recommended "Global -> Local -> Permissions" relationship. In my existing network I use only local groups (most of which are mail enabled) and administration is easy. It seems to me that setting up three separate groups (e.g. "DG_Sales" distribution list, a "GG_Sales" group and a "DL_Sales" group) would create an administrative headache compared to the benefits it offers? What do most people do here? Thanks steve

Redirection of Offline Sync Behavior
by Guest Steve W- 5 replies

We use the Offline Sync feature of XP to keep a backup of users 'My Documents' on the server (Windows Server 2003) for backup protection. The problem is that the users must always work off the server when connected and can work off their local hard drive only when disconnected. Many users are in remote offices with desktops and therefore must traverse the WAN - being quite slow and painful (even across T1). Others use VPN; even more painful. Users on the LAN can feel a impact as well. Question - is there a way to redirect the Offline sync feature so that users can always work locally and have the 'offline' folders copied to the server? Thanks! Ste…

hello,,, i have been loaned a win2000 machine, (this one) and thought i would look around as i havent had much to do with 2000.(my other machine is sick, and will take a while to fix... $$$$$$$$$'s) i wanted to change some icons for a few utilities i down- loaded, and for other things like 'Word, XL' etc. i did a search using this:: ' *.ico ' but found nothing relating to icons. win98 has 'moreicons' and 'shellicons' and similar, but i cant find the file(s) in 2000 where i can have lots of icons to choose from. i found the win2000 Help utility to be useless, there is hardly anything there no matter what. also, a bit off topic, this machine is using O/E5 …
