BUG: Text in Files with "unknown" extensions Associated with Wordpad do not search. Article 309173 is invalid. I have found that if you associate a file with Wordpad, the text within a file search option doesn't work. It is necessary to associate them with Notepad for them to be searchable via the text within them, even if they are merely text files. I've followed the instructions explicitly in the Article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309173 and it doesn't work.

Windows 2003 Server: Questions regarding RDP, CALs
by Guest C. G.- 3 replies

Hi, I am looking into getting a Server running Windows Server 2003 for my heterogeneous office network. Intended hardware base is a Server + 'n' thin clients running embedded linux. There are already Linux Servers in the network. Q1: If I get the 5 client version of Server 2003 does that mean I can simultaneously connect from five independent thin-client sessions over rdp? Q2: Do I really need windows 2003 CALs at all if none of my desk machines use a windows desk-top? Answers greatly appreciated.

Win XP Pro, 40 GB HD about half full, IBM notebook: I appear to have a lot of stuff [59 ?] starting when I start the computer - [1] So what can I safely do to reduce this mess, and will reducing the number probably make the machine work a bit faster ? Is there any particular number of startup programs that I should expect ? [2] Has anyone a comment about WinTasks 5 ? TIA

Hi, The other day (Monday) my son inadvertently (and I have warned him about doing this) opened a file (zip containing a .scr) he received from someone he's known for awhile on MSN and low and behold his system became infected. AVG reported the offending worm as: Trojan Horse Downloader Generic5.ETN and .SOZ Not sure of the actual name of it... Infected files, vnttgb.exe, notify.dll, printers.exe, 1(l)p6fw.sys, DefLib.sys and oocmhxl.exe... He ended up with multiple cascading MSN windows, he hit Ctrl Alt Del to stop it, he momentarily saw the process that was running, but then all processes disappeared from process manager? He no longer is able t…

Reason for (local) profile corruption?
by Guest robert.waters- 1 reply

I administer a 2003 TS with about 10 active users having user profiles local to the server; every so often, a user's profile will become corrupted. Why might this happen? Could logging in from machine A (laptop), disconnecting (no logoff), then logging in with machine B (desktop) cause this (users have exhibited this behavior)? (Note - I have the UPHClean service installed) Actually, I am not even 100% sure that the root problem profile corruption; however, deleting and recreating the user profile fixes the problem (which is: a blank blue screen after connecting, with a 2nd userinit.exe process consuming a huge amount of cpu resources - *sometimes*, after a…

Prevent user internet access on terminal server
by Guest Martrad- 4 replies

Hi, We have a policy in place that populates the users proxy settings with the proxy server info and access to the internet is controlled by a proxy server using an "Internet Access" group. This works fine on the users desktops. When the users login to our terminal server the policy applies to their login and they are granted internet access on the terminal server. How can I stop them accessing the internet on the terminal server but still allow then access on their own PC?

Hello, I'm trying to push out software from a server on a test network running Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 bit edition. I thought I read somewhere that this can't be done but then I found knowledgebase article 324750. That article gives step by step instructions and even after I follow them I still can't get the software to install. What could possibly be wrong??? Thanks, Rich

Lately I've had occurences of the following folder appearing on the desktop and in the C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah Back\My Documents\%USERPROFILE%. It is an actual folder not a variable appearing in both locations. I can remove it and things are fine. Ad-Aware, Virus Scan and Rootkit Detector turn up no results. Checked the registry and found nothing to explain this behavior. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks in Advance

Drive Space
by Guest jcpub- 4 replies

When our server was set up in 2003 Drive C: was allocated 5.85GB. Over the years much of that space was used up and we are down to about 415MB. We have our databases and applications on Drive D:. I deleted the $NTUnistall* files except for the most recent and that broght the free space to about 1GB. The next morning the free space was back to about 415MB. The Veritas backup runs overnight but the space on C: that it uses is freed up upon completion. Any ideas why the free space would change so dratsitcally overnight? I could add another hard drive but I have heard that moving/expanding drive C: is not that simple. Thank you.

i bought a new tv card 'Flytv Cardbus LR502'. İn lifeview tvr program, the 'lvtv.dll' has broken. i did whatever i can do, but nothing changed. i tried to install another program but when i click setup.exe, this appears. " The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL." i installed KB935448 but i didnt work. what should i do for fixing user32.dll?

OE insists on dialup connection
by Guest Gretch- 1 reply

Connections for various mail and newsgroup accounts in OE 6.00.2800.1807 run in Windows2000 are marked as "Any Available", which worked fine until I created a new dialup connection which was tested before returning to using the ethernet LAN connection. Now, every time I try to send email or connect to a newsgroup, OE insists on dialing that new dialup account even though I am currently connected to the Internet through the LAN. How do I restore "Any Available" connections to email and newsgroups, even though they are marked that way? Restarting OE and rebooting seem to have no effect whatsoever on eliminating the dialup connection method upon which OE insists.

Hard Drive Swap

I would like to remove the hard drive on my IBM laptop, which has Windows 2000 installed on it, and replace it with a hard drive which was removed fromanother machine, same model 2682 R40, also running a freshly installed Windows 2000. Undoubtedly there are some differences in the installed driver versions, and the processor on the machine to be fitted is a Pentium 4M 2.0 rather than the 2.2 of the other machine. I'm pretty sure the two CD-DVD combo drives are the same. The proprietary IBM software on the "blind" partition that comes on a new machine is not installed on either machine. Is it likely that once the replacement drive is installed the machine will s…
