Lately, I notice that my machine does not go into standby. Neither does the monitor turn off. I wonder how would the computer know whether to go into standby or not ? What "resets" the standby timer or monitor turnoff timer ? Thanks !

if another user is logged on and I attempt to do a fast user switch then when I click on the the other user icon on the welcome screen, it seems like windows is trying for a moment to load but then the welcome screen flashes a little and it remains on the welcome screen! If howerver I log off from the first account, then I can log on to the second one from the welcome screen! ALSO something has happened with the registry because I am an administrator yet windows does not allow me to change some stuff that I want, I have to right click and select an empty permission box so I can edit it... any ideas? I think xp is calling for a reinstall.... strange…

I get a java update icon (near my clock) to go to windows security center. Security Center icon in notification area
by Guest George Hester- 2 replies

I have Windows XP Professional SP2 not in a domain. It used to be but isn't now. The XP firewall is disabled; there is no anti-virus on the machine; and Automatic Updates is set to notify only. The Security Center icon continues to appear in the notification area and I cannot seem to stop that from happening. Somethimes when I double-click that icon the appearing Window is showning that the Firewall is on, but when I go to the Security Center to turn it off it is still off. When I close out of that Window and again double-click the Security Center icon in the system tray it will show it is off but the icon never goes away in the system tray. Is there someth…

COMMAND LINE NET COMMAND?
by Guest Jethro- 8 replies

I am experimenting with the command-line command 'net'. When I enter 'net view' I get several entries including one that says 'amd-part-1' as a share name and 'disk' as type. I seem to remember that I once set 'amd-part-1' up as the share name for c drive's partition1. I no longer use it. Anyway, I want to get rid of it. How do I do that either as a command or within XP itself? Thanks Jethro

Typing characters stalls and then bursts on monitor
by Guest Bill W- 3 replies

I hope this is the place for this problem. A friend of mine has a relatively new dual-core laptop. It functions without a problem except for one issue. When he is typing characters on the keyboard, the characters display on the monitor as he types until about 50-100 characters are typed and then the display will pause for about 3-5 seconds and then burst the characters he was typing during the pause. It will continue displaying normally and then pause and burst again. This happens with almost anything application he is using including Word and while creating an email in Outlook Express. It even happened when I was trying to type a short phrase in G…

MSI Package Builder

Hello, I'm using the package builder that is on the Windows server 2000 CD to create MSI packages for programs that do not have them. I have created an image of a computer that just has the Operating System. I actually have 2 one for XP and one for Vista. My question is this: Each time I create a package do I need to start over (i.e. with just the OS) to do further packages or can I just move forward from that point (i.e. create the first package, then the second, etc without using a clean system? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich

Next you have to choose one of your fingers. Any finger will work as long as you have some resemblance of control over it. Take that finger and push down on the key with "Caps Lock…

New Hardware Found Error Message
by Guest Bob- 1 reply

Windows 2000 I have successfully installed a new printer & set it as the default printer. It works fine, no problems. Whenever I reboot the computer the "found new hardware... please wait" box comes up (listing my printer model), I must wait almost 5 minutes (the computer is tied up while Windows searches for drivers) then the dialog box asking new to insert the CD with the drivers comes up, I hit the cancel button at that point and everything works fine. What's up? How can I stop this from happening? Thanks in advance... Bob
