Everytime I log onto my financial institution's website, I must verify my identy. The FAQ's say that this is because I am deleting the secure cookie from my browser. This even occurs if i log out and log back in moments later. I have added the bank to my trusted sites, but the problem is still there. How can I keep these cookies from being deleted? -- 4i''''''''s

Everything ran fine this morning including OE. Decided to download the new Adobe Flash Player on a Link in MSN.com. There was a warning but I accepted it, it was on a Microsoft site. Not installed I think. Did not see it in "Find". Immediately went to OE. Could not get on. Tried several times to no avail. Back to my Home page, it worked. Then to my Favorites, a newspaper, call it "Newsworld". Impossible to get on nor on a link of "Newsworld" which is also in my Favorites. Went to "System Restore" and got back to a previous restore point. OE worked. No problems. But impossible to get to "Newsworld". On the status bar I see: Web site found. Waiting fo…

Event Log Descriptions
by Guest TDM- 2 replies

Hello all, First, my apology if this is the wrong NG for this question. I am trying to find detailed descriptions for the EventID's used by the operating system when writing events to the event log. I have found information related to "security" at MSDN, but what Here is an example of what I am asking for http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299475 but for ALL event ID's explained. Is there such a reference ? I am having a bit of trouble finding one. At the very least, I would like to get the event id's for failed file and folder deletes due to lack of permissions. Thanks in advance. TDM

Wandering taskbar
by Guest Blithe- 0 replies

(Applicable to W2K (SP4) For a week now my taskbar randomly relocates to the top, then to the right of the desktop - and refuses to drag back to the bottom where I want it to stay. By 'randomly' I mean that once it relocates then it will stay a day or two then change position for another similar time period. I posted for a remedy here and microsoft.public.win2000.registry but the suggestions were to try dragging the taskbar back (a hopeless task) or to clear my system of malware that was causing the problem. I have since made all reasonable efforts to scan for malware. I was learning to live with the annoyance. However, today, July 23rd, the taskbar sudde…

Questions on anti-virus programs

Hello everyone: After 2 years on being on dial up, I Just switched to high speed MSN with DSL. The package came with McAfee AV & Firewall. After installing *McAfee AV* I noticed a complete slowdown in my computer. Had to remove it. (Did not install the firewall). My questions are: 1) Am I right in just trusting Avast4 as an AV? I haven't had any problems while on dial up & none in the few days with DSL. 2) Are there any other AV programs someone may recommend that are not "hogs" in using computer resources? (I know Norton is "out"!!). 3) I'm also using CCleaner, Spywareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, & Ad-Aware SE Personal. Shouldn't…

XP missing MBR?
by Guest Tom Kane- 2 replies

I have recently built my own PC and installed Windows XP Pro. I'm using it now to write this. Everything is fine, except the computer refuses to boot from the hard disk ... I have to have the installation CD in the CD drive to boot. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly slow boot. I've come to believe that I missed a step in the install and did not indicate that the hard drive (C:) should have the MBR (master boot record) installed. (Note that the BIOS is set to use the hard disk prior to the CD.) But I would have thought that the install would have been bullet proof and would have forced me to put a MBR somewhere, so that doesn't make any sense. A…

TOP - - Data Rate tab
by Guest aaa- 0 replies

Hi, A tech support (idiot) clown from Startech.com insists that Window XP SP2 Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / PCI Serial Port Properties should have a tab for "Data Rate" and an option to "Detect Clock Frequency" but I cannot find either. I have all currently available MS updates, hotfixes, patches, etc. When I first loaded Windows XP SP2, I chose to use Classic windows over XP windows and disabled Themes to ensure it. Would this choice eliminate the Data Rate tab and its various options? If so, when I roll back to XP windows, this tab does not appear. Any thoughts? Thank you. Anna Arkin

close an open file by name
by Guest drdraxx- 3 replies
I'm looking for a way to be able to close an open file by name on a Windows 2003 Server Standard automatically. In a few google searches, I found people listing a command to close all open files: for /f "skip=4 tokens=1" %a in ('net files') do net files %a /close and one to close individual files: net file ID /close The problem with that is knowing the file ID. To test I tried to open a file on the server, check the ID, close the file and open it again but the ID changed. Does anyone know of a method I could use to close one specific file by name by say a scheduled task or .bat file or anything like that?
