Unable to log in to domain from member server
by Guest fraz- 1 reply

I have a member server that recently has only shown local log in as an option (the drop down that would show the domain option is grayed out, showing only the local machine as an option). Since the domain admin is added to the local admin group, I can log into to machine with a domain account. I am not sure if this means of logging in is functionally different or not, but I am a bit alarmed that I am unable to use the dropdown any longer. Any ideas why this would happen? Thanks

I have messed up my access permissions for an external USB drive and can no longer access the drive. Somehow, even administrator privileges are gone. Is there anyway I can restore administrator access to this drive? This is my backup drive. Thanks! -- Tom

RE: XP or Vista on New PC?
by Guest Dave B- 0 replies

RE: XP or Vista on New PC? That is a loaded question ... my theory was that it's better to get it factory installed than to upgrade, so with that in mind I got a brand new tricked out HP laptop and brand new tricked out HP desktop, custom built, with Vista Ultimate. There are serious known issues if you want to try and connect via a network with a computer not running Vista (even XP). I had to buy NetworkMagic.com to be able to connect everything properly. Also be aware that there are several software conflicts with Vista, so you may need to purchase an upgrade for software to work on your Vista computer .... for sure Quickbooks, Adobe Creative Sui…

Gurus, I'm taking an unscientific poll. What is your XP NIC settings set at currently? Auto-negotiate, hard set to 100mbs/FULL, or other? -- Spin

Local Intranet Zone
by Guest Jeff- 3 replies

I want all my terminal servers to have a specific server added to their Local Policy zone in their internet options. Where do i do that at? I am hoping there is a flag inside the GPO for the terminal servers. Everytime I have a new user login their apps fail. After the user adds the server to the local intranet zone all works ok. i don't want to have to do this for 400+ users if there is a way to do it in a policy. Thanks,

alu9i4j2.SYS

I saw this module in the System process view in process explorer. According to process explorer it is located in system32\drivers but it is not really there, so I cannot submit it for analysis. When I launch Depends on this module it has the same attributes as atapi.sys - same file size, version number, date and time stamp, etc. When I view the module strings in the module properties in process explorer and compare them to the strings in atapi.sys they are exactly the same and in the same order. I did a google search on this but nothing came up. Has anyone else seen this or something similar and know what it is?

Select Boot Drive?
by Guest LMO- 4 replies

Aloha all. I just bought a new Dell system. It came with Vista. I hated it, wiped the drive, and installed XP. I'm thinking of buying a 2nd drive, and installing the original OS on to the new drive, then, upon bootup, selecting either XP or Vista. Is this possible? The new system is SATA. Does this matter for what I'm thinking of? Thanks!

Determining USB port version
by Guest Don Culp- 1 reply

How can I determine if my computer's USB ports are version 1 or 2. (The reason I'm asking is that copying files to a USB drive seems very slow so I suspect that the ports may be version 1.) Thanks, Don Culp

dirty bit chkdsk
by Guest Donald Eagle- 2 replies

Is there any way to terminate chkdsk after a dirty bit starts it during boot-up? I do know there is about an 8 second window to exit before it starts, but once it starts, is there anything that can be done? It has run about 4 times on my D: disk, but has never found anything, and it takes 3 hours to run. I am running XP Home, SP2 with all security updates. -- Don Eagle To reply personally, drop the Latin "not more"

Blue Screen of Death - Error Msg
by Guest pbl- 2 replies

Thanks to those who gave me some ideas regarding this problem and how I might save some of the files on my drive. Unfortunately I have not had internet access for several days so I decided to create a new thread. What I didn't provide in the first thread was information about the error. So here goes; It followed downloading a file which AVG Free Edition told me contained a virus. Before I could nutralise it the blue screen occurred. Now I am in a blue screen reboot cycle; as soon as I reboot and Windows XP begins to load up the blue screen occurs again. The blue screen says: A problem has been detected and windows has ben shut down to prevent damage…

Hard Drive Died (May it Rest in Peace)
by Guest xtremely poor w/ xtremely bad luck- 5 replies

My hard drive died (conveniently on the first day of summer school). My version of Windows XP SP2 came on my laptop. It's barely 2 years old. I have my product key, but I do not have a boot cd because, of course, none came with my laptop. I'm a poor college student; if it weren't for McDonald's Dollar Menu, I'd also be a starving. How can I install Windows XP again... (cost effectively)?
