I guess this case is not so simple... problem is, I just need to "erase the first 3 characters of each file". For example, I have this folder with 1,860 files. All of these files are named: "ir_#####", where the # sign represents a number. So, each file contains a 5-digit number preceded by the "ir_". There are no duplicates in the "#####" section. I need to remove the "ir_" portion on all 1,860 files. ir_12345 changes to 12345 ir_24680 changes to 24680 ir_30817 changes to 30817 etc... Is this possible? How?

by Guest Dan I- 1 reply

I hope somebody can help. I recently purchase Microsoft Office Professional 2007. Word and Excel installed properly, but when I installed disk #2 I received an error message. The message stated that I could not install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. I contacted Microsoft and they indicated that it is a WMI configuration problem, and they were not responsible (Windows XP Professional was installed on my computer by others). The company that installed Windows XP do not have any idea on how to fix the problem. Has anybody have the same problem with this application. Has anybody have any solutions on how to fix my WMI system for my computer. Do I…

I need to create a Print Server and have never done so before. We currently print by just using direct IP printing from each workstation, but are looking to go to a Server Queue so that we can consolidate printers. I was not able to find any good documentation on Microsoft.com for how to properly set up a print server. The server for this is 2003 R2 SP2. Thanks

Quirky RDP issue when using a script during shutdown
by Guest Aaron B.- 0 replies

Hey guys, Just up front - This is not a show stopper problem for me. But, it does cause a little eye rolling from other admins who I am trying to get to start using this tool... I created a little script that pops up when an administrator shutsdown a server or logs out (gpedit.msc kicks it off) of a server that dumps what the admin did on the server into a centeralized database. Then we all can see what each other did on a box and everyone is familiar with the history of what is going on. The only wierd thing though is that one can't cut and paste from *the client desktop* to the servers "activity log form" (aka the script that kicks off) while …

Hello, I have a Xerox Phaser 860 printer and I need to find out if it's compatible with Terminal Services. My server is running Windows Server 2003 OS. Any chance there's a list of compatible printers out there somewhere? I've contacted Xerox, but the person I spoke with had no idea what terminal services is... Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mt

What's the ^ command line symbol for?
by Guest andrea@NOSPAMPLEASE.com- 2 replies

Hi all, I have a question about the Windows command line interpreter: The ? symbol replaces one character with boolean true, the * symbol replaces one sequence of characters with boolean true, but what does the ^ symbol do? Just try to run these commands and you'll see it must have a special meaning: ECHO ^ ECHO ^^ ECHO ^^^ ECHO ^^^^ same on filenames. If a file contains ^ in its name, I am forced to specify it between quotes even if it doesn't contain any space! Thanks, Andrea

Vista 64x
by Guest Gilb- 4 replies

I recently bought a laptop with pre-installed software. When I set the system up it gave me the option of installing "Windows Vista Business" or "Windows Vista Business 64x". I went for the standard Vista Business, but I'm now wondering whether I should Have chosen the 64x version. What are the implications of runing the 32 bit version with a 64 bit processor? Is it possible to change from the 32 bit version to the 64, and how will this benefit me? Many thanks Gilb

multi boot thinks 98se is win2k
by Guest Quaestor- 3 replies

I have run win2k & win98se before with this system, multibooting just fine. After reinstalling w2k, I found that win98se would no longer boot, with the complaint that ntoskrnl could not be found (a w2k problem). Reinstalling w98 did not help. No matter how I try to deal with it, trying to boot w98 from the multi-boot menu runs into the problem that it thinks I'm trying to boot w2k. Here is the boot.ini, which according to all I've read (and that's a lot) should be working: [boot Loader] Timeout=7 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XXCLONE: (Cloned Volume) [d:0,…
