Booting problems after deleting XP from the E partition of a 98SE machine
by Guest thanatoid- 9 replies

Well, I installed XP on my Win98SEL computer, played with it a little, installed a few programs, made the interface etc. as annoying as possible (it was actually quite easy to turn off all the idiot prompts, although it seems that getting rid of "My Documents" may be impossible... but I'll worry about it later, maybe), and decided it isn't /that/ horrible. Basically, I have found out what I wanted to know about XP. Someday I may find out what I need to know about Linux. For now I have decided there is no point whatsoever in keeping XP as long as my Win98SEL machine runs as well as it does - and does everything I need it to do. When it dies and I hav…

Screen Res
by Guest Mike K- 1 reply

Morning all, We have a TS 2003 Farm running very nicely with all thin clients / PCs using RDP to access a standardised desktop. A single application has to be run in 1024x768 120% fonts. The company that support the product tell me that we can make this work but I'm lost on how to do it. All of the users connect using their native screen resolution (1280x1024 for the most part) and simply login using RDP. I must be missing something here but I guess they are potentially talking about publishing the application or something? Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? Many thanks, Mike

Tried to burn a dvd last night. It would just set and do nothing. I have 2 burners, I was trying to use my lightscribe burner. After looking in my computer I notice this burner is now listed as a DVD-Ram drive my other burner is listed as DVD-RW. I never noticed this before I installed SP3. Used the other burner and it worked fine. Went to lite-ons web site and I have the newest driver. Any ideas?

Power utility?
by Guest Mark G.- 3 replies

So I have been looking to see how to auto boot windows at specific times. Nothing XP Pro can do by itself from what I see so I was turning to some utilities out there. While quickly browsing I thought maybe some of you have run across some good utilities for this very thing? Am trying to make my computers turn off at certain days/time and then turn them on at certain days/times. I have never really cared for the hibernate function built into XP Pro plus I want to conserve some power by turning off machines when I know I want be using them for a period of time or need access to them even if briefly. A lot of utilities I briefly glanced at don't see to have …

Local profile cannot load
by Guest Clang- 0 replies

I have had several workstation with this same problem. When the user logs on in the morning they receive a message that the local profile cannot be found and they are being logged on with a temporary profile. Users only log off at night and then log back on in the morning. If the user reboots his computer he can log on with no problems. I have removed and rebuilt both the domain and local profiles for these users. Two worked with nor problems, another worked for about a week and then the problem started again. Does anyone have any idea on what is causing this and how I can keep it from continually happening? Thanks

Printing to IP Printer not working
by Guest PhilGSmith- 1 reply

I have just added two printer drivers to a client's laptop. Both printers are on a network and are being used by other people on the network. On the laptop I added the printers using their IP addresses adding the printers as a local printer. The printers installed without a hitch. However, when I sent a test print to them neither printer responded. The print queue displayed the test print job, then it disappeared as you would expect when the print job succeeds, but nothing came out of the printer, no error on the printer lcd or on the PC screen. I tried loading a PCL dirver instead of PCL6 on one printer, but the affect was the same. The netwo…

TS licences not being issued
by Guest Rob S- 2 replies

Hi, A couple of months ago I installed a Windows 2003 server, with terminal services, and at that time I enabled TS but didn't have any licences installed, so it started issuing temporary ones. In the meantime I purchased and installed a retail pak 10 user licence (per user). It shows up in licencing as Total 10 Available 10. The temporary ones are still being used, and today I got a message saying they would expire in 0 days. Does this mean it will automatically start using the "real" ones, or do I need to do something? thanks in advance -Rob robatwork at mail dot com

USB device suddenly becomes "unknown device"
by Guest Pawel S.- 2 replies

hi guys, today something strange happened to my 4port usb hub. after soft-rebooting my system i wondered why my external drives and mouse didn't work (all connected to my usb hub). at closer look i found out that an "unknown device" is plugged into my machine which happened to be the usb hub. of course i tried unplugging and replugging it to other usb ports but no effects at all - stll unknown. so i googled and found out that some people have experienced similar problems and solved it by uninstalling all usb devices from the device manager, deleting an "infcache"-file and rebooting. (and yes, i did "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" and did rem…

Can't get Process Monitor filter by a "Result" other than "SUCCESS" or "Unknown" Gurus, I really like using Microsoft (formerly Systernals) Process Monitor to view OS activity on a micro level. Only thing is I can't get it to filter by a "Result" other than "SUCCESS" or "Unknown". Has anyone else had better luck with that? -- Spin

Hi, virtual Windows Server 2003 Standard as Webserver: the server cannot connect to the internet: The servers IE cannot find any site (looking for proxysettings with no end), even not http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 (standard-website is running) AntiVirus updater cannot update. The eventlogs don't show any entries which could help. ping is ok for Standardgateway and DNS Server. Remote-Desktop connection is ok. http and ftp connections from a external clients are ok. If possible, I don't want to restart this virtual webserver. Are there some services, which could be involved and could be restarted? What could be the reason for this problem? Than…

RDP into XP after NewSID
by Guest ChrisW- 0 replies

Hiya, I made an image of Windows XP Professional SP3. This has a whole lotta software and settings. The only thing that doesn’t work is I cant RDP in. Everything else is peaches. The error I get is: Event Type: Error Event Source: TermDD Event Category: None Event ID: 50 Description: The RDP protocol component "DATA ENCRYPTION" detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client. So I get this error. It doesn’t happen on the original image. It only happens after I run NewSID. So RDP works on the original image and breaks after NewSID. I can get it working again by deleting the Certificate registry key. But RDP only works one tim…
