Trouble setting up Windows Home Edition
by Guest Trevor- 12 replies

I was having trouble setting up Windows Home Edition as it kept hanging up at 'Setup cannot copy driver.cab' I carried on without it but it would set up. I tried Windows Pro, and that has worked fine. It did stall at Cannot copy Driver.cab, but on retry went through fine. However I don't really want XP Pro, as I have given up with it in the past do to not being able to get my home network working with its overly complicated settings for my use. Now I'm up and running with Pro can I edit the HE files (e.g. copy Driver.cab). I have tried this unsuccessfully so far. Also which of the two sets of the systems files are which? How can I tell the differenc…

by Guest xiaomei- 2 replies

Hi, There, Last time we found the network printer with RJ-45 interface and build-in print server can not be mapped on the TS when login to remote Terminal server, we checked and got the document from MS as following: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/302361/en-us It instructed to change client registry then it will work, I did the test, yes, it worked fine after the changes. However, the problem come: We have around 700 desktop in each brance office, it will be a big task if we did this on each machine one by one. Is that any other solution to solve the problem, like any patches from Ms. Because for windows vista, it does not need the changes…

W2k3 R2 SP2 and RDP
by Guest Schmeg- 2 replies

I have a Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 SP2. We upgraded with SP2 a few weeks ago. Prior to that, the server had been in place fully functional for several months. After applying SP2 we found that remote desktop to the server worked sporadically. Sometimes it would connect just fine. Other times when the client hit connect, it would appear to attempt to connect (very, very fast) and then just leave the client at the RDP connection screen again. We've also tried with the new RDP software and no difference. Flashes "attemting to connect" and then to "not connect" as fast as the eye can see. Multiple clients, same results, no errors or event anywhere…

Environmental Variables ini file
by Guest slawrie- 1 reply

I have a program that normally installs on a workstation and has an ini file that sets user specific variables within the program. The problem is that when it is installed on a teminal server all users are accessing the same ini file. I was told that I could create a directory for each user and place the ini file in the individual directory. Then delete the original ini file. I was also told I would need to set an environmental variable that would find each users ini file. I am unsure how to do that and could use some advice. Thanks, Steve

TS, GPO, diffent users
by Guest Hugh O'Donnell- 5 replies

I have: 1. Set up a server for Remote Desktop access. 2. Created a Security Group (acct_users) and only allow them to access this TS. 3. Created OU for server (term_server) and linked GPO with loopback on it. 4. Set default application for TS via the GPO. 5. Set Domain Admin's "Apply this Policy" to Denied in the GPO. My problem is, 1. When a Domain Admin TS's into this machine, they still run the default app. (I'm sure this is because the loopback doesn't look at what user is being run... but how do I implement this?) 2. Users can still jack around with the local drives from the application's "Save As" dialog. Is there a way to keep them out of the l…

Restrict Shutdown?
by Guest JT- 5 replies

Is it possible, using GPO's, to restrict users from shutting down their workstation but allow them to restart? It seems you can only restrict shutdown and that removes the restart command as well. We want to prevent users from shutting down at night. Countless emails and warnings and people still shut down their systems. But we want the option to allow them to restart in case they are asked by our department through the day without requiring a user excluded from the policy in having to do so. Workstations: XP Pro, Win2k Pro all patches security updates. 2003 native AD environment. Thanks

New to WDS.. Moving from RIS.. Please Help.

My current deployment method has been RIS. I have 4 images which install any PC I put on the network. Some have PXE network cards other need the use of a PXE floppy. It all works great. If there are driver changes I just change the $OEM$ folders and update the SIF file. Perfect. All of this is running on a single Server AD environment. This server runs AD, DHCP, DNS, WINS et al. Well now I've updated to SP2 and installed WDS and nothing works. My PXE boots give me a message about no boot image found and I'm getting a WDServer error, Event ID 769 and 770 in my event log. I'm very frustrated that what once worked flawlessly now is useless. Can anyone…

Novice recently clean installed his XP. I have downloaded the software from the official Canon site for the Canon scanner FB636U. But in the 'device manager' it appears in 'other devices' as a big yellow question mark. I have then gone to 'hardware update wizard' > 'include this location in the search' then when I browse to the location where I stored the download (a folder I created in 'My Documents') the O.K. boxed is greyed out so I can not proceed. grateful for any advice please.

Caching Settings
by Guest Shawn P- 0 replies

I have a W2K SP 4 server set up as a file server to store roaming profiles. The past admins did not ensure the "Allow caching of files in this shared folder" check mark was cleared. This has caused profile issues for our users and we end up rebuilding the profile. Is there a registry setting that would ensure caching was disabled when a new folder was created and/or ensure caching is not allowed on exisitng folders? Any other ideas on how to turn off this feature without touching each folder? Please let me know if you need further info to help me out! TIA

Hi there, I'm setting up a environement that need an highly accurate time sync. I have 1 PDC that own the FSMO role, 14 DC in 14 distants sites (56k wan) (all Win 2k3 Sp1) in which I have workstations running under Windows XP Pro Sp2. I have try many configuration in W32time registry setting on both servers and workstations but I can't manage to have an accurate time on a long time basis. Mostly, after couple of hours, the time drift on random machine that makes the whole domain glitch and our SQL entries and replication (bi-directional) just goes messed up. Specify environmental variable when starting command prompt?
by Guest Don Culp- 1 reply

From the Run... option of the Start menu or from a shortcut in my Startup folder, is there any way to set an environmental variable at the same time that I'm opening a command prompt window. From the Run prompt I have tried: cmd "SET ALGMEM=2000" (also without the " ") but this doesn't work. I realize that I can manually set the ALGMEM environmental variable after the cmd window opens but I'd like to avoid this since I need to open many of these cmd windows, all with the same environmental variable. (Setting a global ALGMEM environmental variable via the control panel interferes with a Windows program that also uses the same environmental variable so this is not …
