Win2K Server: Firewall and/or anti-virus

Hi Folks, I've had a problem with my XP machine and have had to dig out an old computer with Win2K Server. This computer had never been connected to the internet before but as soon as I connected I received some version of the GOTCHA virus. I had to reformat the HD and reinstall the OS but within minutes of re-connecting (through a dial-up connection) I was infected again. I bought McAfee VirusScan Plus but it won't install on this machine. I don't know if it's because the OS is a server version, because it's an x86 processor or both. I also tried Avast with the same results. Anyone know of a way to protect this machine while connecting through dial…

delayed write failed

I've just bought a new pc and have begun loading printer drivers etc. I put it into standby last night and when windows booted this morning I got this error message: "Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." I don't know what the file is. Does anyone know? Also, I doubt it's a hardware failure but it's possible. And I don't have a network connection set up yet. Should I be getting in touch with the retailer or is it a common, easily solved problem? Thanks -- Millie :)

I hate the doggy search
by Guest GreatArtist- 9 replies

I hate when you search for files and the dog animation comes up and tries to hold your hand through the search process like you're retarded. This is so unneeded and cumbersome. It actually makes things worse. Anybody know if/how I can just get back a classic style search like in windows 2000?

Do I really need to turn off the Firewall to add VPN Role?
by Guest rjcmi- 1 reply

I am attempting to add the remote access/VPN Role to my install of Server 2003. Currently the Server is working as a Terminal Server with about 30 users. I'd like to add the VPN role in order to assist with the remote offices with the ability to print to the network printers in their offices. When I go to add the role however I get a pop up saying the following: The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing is turned on. Stop the service and mark it disabled. I really don't want to take the firewall down on a server that is currently operating as a Terminal Server. If anyone can give me some advice or assistance on how that next step should be taken …

I hope someone can help me as I have been struggling with this for a couple days now, I will keep it as simple as possible... I took over a network administration position at my job, and I am trying to get our client pc's that are on our domain to download Windows Updates, but none of them will install them, they all Fail (they seem to download the updates just fine). If I build a new PC, I can download and install the updates just fine, but the second I join the PC to the Domain, it fails. All 10 PC's are part of the same Group in Active Directory, and I have verified that all the Windows Update settings are set at Not Configured in both Computer and …

by Guest Tom- 1 reply

Win2K3 SBS P2 Exchange Server 2003 SP2 MS's website seems a little confusing to me in the GPMC area and I'm really not sure I have everything on my server, so.... I'm attempting to put a new user, WebUser, on our internal system and I'm not too sure how to proceed. I need to setup a web user, WebUser, in some group policy configurations. Essentially, I'm supposed to Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy but Local Security Policy does not exist. In reviewing our system, I'm not too sure how to determine if the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) is installed. How do I determine if the GPMC is installed? [Final Destin…

Laptop as DC for disaster recovery?
by Guest Newell White- 2 replies

We have a single-domain LAN with 2xW2k3 servers, 35 XP workstations and 5 XP laptops accessing via VPN. The PDC emulator also hosts SQLserver and an Access database which is critical for all aspects of the business. Total disaster risks we face are fire and tidal inundation. In such event we would need to set up skeleton operation with small LAN to handle: (a) Diversion of manufacture and test (electronic PCB assemblies) to other company sites (b) Sales and customer support. © Insurance claim for lost components and products. I am considering recommending a disaster recovery strategy based on the following: 1) Install W2k3 on a laptop, promote to …

Secure Remote Desktop?
by Guest kramer31- 3 replies

Hi. I need to use Remote Desktop to perform administrative tasks on a company server. I'm worried about people stealing passwords or snooping on the session. 1. Does Remote Desktop use a secure socket protocol by default (if not it probably should)? 2. If not, can I set it up to use SSL for both a. authentication (to prevent password theft) b. the entire session (to prevent snooping) Thanks.
