We have a Windows 2003 server, SP2, (member server) that started becoming unresponsive once or twice a day. The event viewer shows three different Event ID 1053 events: 1) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The RPC server is unavailable.). Group Policy processing aborted. 2) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.). Group Policy processing aborted. 3) Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.). Group Policy processing aborted. The console is somewhat functional in that the keybo…

As a result of some problems I was having a couple of weeks ago I installed XP on top of my existing installation trying to correct the problems. It seems like this fixed the problem, but now many updates won't install. XP downoads the updates then when it tries to install them it comes back with a very long list (50-60) updates saying they could not be installed. Every day when I start the computer it downloads them all again and again fails to install them. What's this all about and how do I get it to install the updates? jim

by Guest ToddAndMargo- 4 replies

Hi All, I need to upgrade a customer's computer from Vista Home Basic to XP-Pro (several of their mission critical software, such as UPS World Ship do not run in Vista). Is there a reason for me to reformat the hard drive or will the existing Vista NTFS format also work with XP? (I do plan on removing the current Windows directory with Bart PE before upgrading). Many thanks, -T

Is there, anywhere, a list of XP-comapatible programs which users have found are incompatible with vista? (I don't mean stuff like printer drivers - although that would be annoying enough - but full programs.) TIA.

I am unable to capture a screen image using the PrtSc key, nor am I able to capture the contents of an active window using Alt PrtSc key combination. By capture I mean I ran clipBrk.exe immediately after PrtSc and it was empty. Perhaps some graphics application has taken over these features. How can I determine exactly what happens when I press PrtSc. -- KC

Drive Mapping

In a workground environment we have a shared drive on a Server which is used to store backups of user PST files. Each user has access to a directory under this folder such as 'asmith' We have created a mapping on the clients to their folder as R: and set it to reconnect at login. They must use a unique username and password to connect the mapping. This all works however at startup Windows XP does not prompt the user to enter the password unless they click on the R: drive to try to connect. In Windows 2000 the users are prompted after loggin in for the map drive password. We need this to happen in XP as the PFBackup tool fails if they haven't authenti…

Can't share a folder?
by Guest Bob Altman- 3 replies

Hi all, Why is that that when I log in as a non-privileged domain user I can't share out a folder? When I right-click on a folder, "Sharing and Security" is not one of the available menu items. And if I select "Properties" from the context menu, I have a Security tab, but not a Share tab. I know it's not a file protection thing, because I explicitly gave my account full access to the folder I want to share out. I'm guessing it's a policy of some sort, but I couldn't find it... TIA - Bob
