divxsm.exe

Lately when running Bryce 5.5 and WMP11 at the same time, we see the divxsm.exe icon show up in the notification area for just a second. It keeps flickering like that on and off. When we close Bryce and WMP, a few minutes later, it will stop. I've noticed that I have not seen divxsm.exe on systems that do not have Bryce installed. Should I try reinstalling Bryce? Is this a glitch, a virus, spyware, or something? Avast is up-to-date, and scanned for spyware with Ad-Aware 2007 and Windows Defender. Thanks. On boot - wallpaper only, no taskbar no icons
by Guest Gus Zernial- 1 reply

I did a fresh install of WinXP SP2 on a new computer. Subsequently installed hardware drivers, AVG free and SpyBot S&D. At that point everything worked fine. Then I downloaded and installed all updates (81 of them) from Microsoft Update, and rebooted. Now on boot I get "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close", and I get desktop wallpaper, no taskbar, no icons. When I try to start windows explorer I get the same message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". I tried booting "last known good configuration - same result. Web search suggests this may be due to a bad patch - is that possible and if so which o…

I would like to attach a file, Reminder.wps, to the Startup Menu. I had it for years but after a reformat, forgot how to do it. I tried to "Move" the file to Startup but it's another program that shows up similar to Window Explorer, PowerDesk. I guess it was the wrong way. Thank you

USB File Transfer
by Guest Pete- 5 replies

Hello, was wondering if someone could help me. I have a USB hard drive that I plug into my computer and when I transfer files, it disconnects and reconnects. I have also noticed that my mouse and keyboard will be nonresponsive for a quick moment when I try to use them at certain points. I searched the Help and Support and they said there is a hotfix for this issue to call. I do not however, want to be charged for the call. Can anyone help me or does anyone have the fix? Thanks!

Hello, I couldn't find a group for Longhorn (or 2008 server). I have a problem with Data Execution protection, whenever I open a web page that is a pdf file DEP closes internet explorer. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop this, if I add the Adobe programs as exceptions it still happens. Is there a way to turn off DEP?

Cannot delete folder in Explorer
by Guest Jack Lake- 4 replies

When I try to delete a particular folder in Windows Explorer it gives me the error message "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk". I have two of these Folder/files that refuse to be erased. Both were created as leftovers after I used a program called clit.exe which is used to convert an ebook .lit file to an ebook HTML file. The program does in fact work as promised, but somehow erases the original file on the disk without telling Explorer about it, or at least that's what I think is happening since Scandisk says there are no disk errors. How can I erase this folder/file that thinks it is a file (but isn't) in the Explorer interface? …

Suddenly sluggish
by Guest JimG- 0 replies

My home desktop (2ghz Core Duo, 1gb ram) runs 2003 Server (mainly so I can use TS when traveling). It's a recent re-install of Standard Edition Sp2 and was working great. Suddenly (I'm sure I had something to do with it), certain functions have become very slow. Several examples: Invoking IE6 displays a partially built window for 15 seconds before loading my home page. It's a lattice-work of blue lines with the previous screen contents showing through during the pause. Invoking Eudora7 takes about the same time. Most other applications start up immediately. One peculiar one is that if I cut/paste between applications, the paste takes the same…

Upside-Down Screen Content
by Guest noorjabal- 5 replies

My cat lay along the lower end of my keyboard while the computer was on - which turned the contents of the screen upside down! Re-booting and shutting down have failed to solve the problem. I also tried systems restore but that didn't work either, although I'm not sure if I was using it correctly. All the start-up data is the right way up, but everything goes upside down from Windows "Welcome" onwards. Can you suggest any key combination that might fix the problem? Or anything else? What combination of keys might the cat have pressed to cause this? Any answers, tips or ideas would be much appreciated.

Last plea for help before I attempt a reinstall.. Windows XP Home, SP2 Appears to boot normally, AVG and ZoneAlarm connect to the internet and update. But I have no access to any application. Error reads: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." But I am the administrator! Can open explorer and navigate through the file system and even delete files. Can access it from my other networked machines (so I have been able to backup my files). Have googled for a solution but the IE7 problem shouldn't affect me, I use Firefox. Any and all help appreciated. Chee…

Re: SFC/scannow I am experiencing an identical situation to the one originally described in this thread (scannow wants XP and XP Service Pack CDs, no dllcache in the system32 folder ... it's in the LastGood folder described by the original poster). I'm thrilled to find that someone else has experienced it, not so thrilled that it has never been updated with a reply from the original poster, giving the answers to the questions from Darrell! MY answers are: I'm running a Toshiba laptop and it arrived 'as is', with the O/S and any service pack files already installed. I've got recovery CDs but no retail copy of Windows XP (it's supposed to be Media Center…
