Make shell32.dll working again (shell replacement)
by Guest tom.danecker@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, I created my own shell replacement and it's working quite well. The shell is registered in the registry in "...\Winlogon\Shell" instead of explorer.exe. My problem is, that the shell32.dll doesn't provide any functionality anymore (I think the functionality was provided by explorer.exe previously). How can my own shell provide this functionality? My concret problem is the following: I'm still using explorer.exe as file manager and it works without major problem, but there is one minor: The explorer.exe isn't able to call SHChangeNotifyRegister and so it doesn't immediatly display changes in the file system. Whenever files are copied or deleted, the explo…

Windows XP separate control of AC97 audio connectors?
by Guest Inacio- 0 replies

Hello, I am trying to control (disable/enable/set the volume) of the front and back audio connectors of an AC´97 audio device. I am using Windows XP. Right now when I plug a speaker in the back connector and a phone in the front connector, both play audio at the same time. I would like to be able to control that, as well as the mic levels. Some documents about the AC´97 architecture indicate that this would depend on the software and drivers that are installed. But I have upgraded the driver and still am not able to do it. Do you know if this separate control for the AC´97 hardware is feasible? How can I do that? Thanks in advance, Inacio.

Your terminal services temporary client license will expire in * days. Please contact your system administrator to get a permanent license. Hi, Our users are getting this message when logging into one of our windows 2003 servers through mstsc. We have 5 per user licenses available but even though the licensing mode is set to per user, it still only issues temporary licenses. I've been searching for a while and I found this quote on the microsoft site: "Currently, Windows Server 2003 does not manage User CALs. This means that even though there is a User CAL in the license server database, the User CAL will not be decremented when it is used. This does not r…

Latest Updates and IIS

I recently installed the latest updates to a x64 Windows Server 2003 with WSUS 3.0 (64 bit version) installed. After the reboot, WSUS was not working. After investigation, I discovered IIS was now in 32 bit mode instead of the 64 bit mode needed by WSUS 3.0. I found a script that restored IIS to the 64 bit version and WSUS was alright. The updates installed based on KB936357, KB926122, & KB925398. Has anyone else seen this issue with the lastest group of Microsoft Updates?

Redundant Terminal Server Licensing Issues
by Guest Terminal Servers Licensing Issues- 3 replies

Hello All, I am new to this forum and I am in dire need of some help. Here is my situation. Two Windows Server 2003 (standard) servers that I want to run redundantly. Windows XP (SP 2) clients. I think I want the servers setup to be each both a terminal server and a licensing server in case one fails. I have implemented NLB with these servers but I am not sure if this is going to act the way I want. I have 10 TS CALS on each machine and each is registered as a licensing server. I think I also need to setup Session Directory for these servers. I essentially want the client to be able to connect and get a TS CAL (per device) no matter if either ser…

Basic WINS configuration question.
by Guest Purtech- 0 replies

I have two Server Standard 2003 R2 SP1 Domain Controllers. Lets say one Domain is xyz.com and the other lab.xyz.com. Full names: adminserver.xys.com and labserver.lab.xyz.com. A trust relationship flows from adminserver to labserver, but not the other way around. WINS was initially put on adminserver, then I started having errors that made me believe I needed WINS on labserver. Now both have WINS. DHCP exists only on adminserver and handles both domains. So...in the DHCP scopes do I make adminserver the Primary WINS and labserver Secondary? Does it matter? All the lab computer will wind up using adminserver as Primary WINS. Or should I install DHCP …

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002 w/ Service Pack 2. Recently I used the add/remove programs tool to remove several programs that were no longer being used. Unfortunately, I think that I deleted at least one program that was still being used because I am having trouble accessing certain files. Is there a way to view a list of programs that have been removed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Disabling Windows Printer Mappings
by Guest Alex Anderson- 2 replies

Hello Everyone, I have TS 5.0 and I know you can disable windows printer mappings however does this setting apply to mapped printers via login script? The login script has to run so they get their networked drives, however the printers (because of the application being used on the TS server) need to be disabled from being run from the login script since we setup the printers manually on this TS server instead. Right now the TS server has a check mark next to Windows Printer Mappings, and I'm assuming it's disabled. I guess I need a clarification what this setting means and if there's a way to disable printers being mapped over via login script.

We are using a Windows 2003 terminal server. I can connect with this server trough the Internet. In the router I set the NAT table to the server. When I connect to the IP address of my ADSL with RDP software then the connection is made to the Terminal server. When I like to add a second server (performance issue) then I'm not able to use NAT. Is there a way to use more than 1 Terminal server with only 1 ADSL line? (Load balancing?)

Can I trust the Geek Squad? 1 2
by Guest nomail1983@hotmail.com- 46 replies

I am having a couple problems with Windows and common application (Adobe Flash), and I have exhausted my ability to troubleshoot and remedy them. I need an "expert". But I am leery. By "expert", I mean someone who knows enough about Windows XP (Pro 2002 SP2) to truly problem-solve, not someone who simply walks down a troubleshooting tree that has "reload Windows" on the 2nd or 3rd branch -- and not a "hacker" who tries random changes in the hope of stumbling upon a solution. Does anyone have first-hand experience with the Geek Squad? Preferably someone who is not an employee of GS ;-). Can I trust them?
