can ping server with fqdn but not with netbios name

Hi- I have a very strange issue going on. I installed a new server today and added it to the domain as a member server for hosting user home directories. (Will replace our old slow and crappy server). I can access it just fine using \\servername\share from almost any computer I can come in contact with. However from both of our domain controllers the only way I can ping it or access its shares is by using the fqdn (\\servername.domain.edu.local\share) which is annoying. Both domain controllers serve as AD integrated DNS servers each with itself as its primary and the other as the secondary. ALl IP's are static. all the servers are plugged int…

Compressed Drive

In Disk Properties, if Compress Drive is selected, is actual disk space conserved, or only apparent space? Also, is there an overhead burden associated with having a drive compressed in terms of slower reads/writes? Thanks, -- JCB\1059

Window coordinates?
by Guest Rob- 2 replies

I am trying to prove that an application running under windows XP has a bug. I suspect that when double clicking on the taskbar, windows or the application changes it window location to a position off the screen. The symptoms are: - the window disappears - The item is stillon the task bar. - clicking on the taskbar item does not maximize the window (at least not on the viewable screen) - minimizing all other apps does not display the item. Is there a tool that i can use to display the coordinates of the window so i can show it to the techies and tell them "i told you so"? or a couple of lines that i can run under vb/.net to do this? (i have .…

No preview panel for certain pictures

I have been given pictures on a cd and can get a preview panel when using the cd. However when I copied them to my computer I can only get a thumbnail and no preview panel. I can however preview other images in my pictures it is just these particular pictures. I recently had a problem with getting a message that windows could not find a file before that window actually opened and edited the DDE setting of certain files which fixed this problem. I am not sure if they are at all related but I can only think of that recent change. Thanks for any help.

Write Caching vs. Safe Removal
by Guest Janetb- 3 replies

At Device Manager>Disk Drives>[R-click on particular disk drive]>Policies Tab, we can choose between Optimize-for-Quick-Removal or Optimize-for-Performance. I would normally use the Safely Remove Hardware Icon, so, on the on hand, I might as well take advantage of the Optimize for Performance option. But suppose a drive NOT optimized for quick removal inadvertantly becomes unplugged, or if there is a power blackout---what bad things can happen? Can I be in danger of losing all the data on the drive? And how much of performance improvement does the Optimize for Performance option afford? Not clear on the disadvantages (possible consequences) of eac…
