Remote backup server for disaster recovery
by Guest GerryA- 8 replies

I need some advice regarding a project to create a remote server that users can access in the event of a disaster that causes access to the main server to be unavailable. The scenario is that in the event of a pending disaster some employees will relocate and access the main server/office remotely. If this remote access becomes affected by the disaster then the users will switch to the alternate server in a remote location. I am looking for advice as to how best to configure the remote server, do i add it to the existing Domain and then restore the data to it? My current train of though is that the servers will not be linked after the original configurat…

Hi All, I am trying to install a piece of software. When It gets to the configuring Windows Installer, I get the following error: 1628: Failed to complete installation as envisaged in the script I found an old reference to 1628 and clean out my temp file and upgraded my windows installer. The same installation file (.exe) works on other computers. Anyone know what is going on with the Windows Installer? Is "envisaged" even a real word? Many thanks, -T

USB Flash Drives creation of "ghost drive" letter
by Guest Dorset- 6 replies
Can any help? My laptop has C,D drives,E (CD drive). I add a flash drive which shows as F. If I add one additional flash drive at the same time this shows on the Control Panel as Removable Drive G and H (with the correct name for the USB flash drive). Clicking on Properties for G shows Full and H space available. I cannot transfer data to Drive H as the messages say the drive is full. I am therefore unable to use the USB flash drive due to the extra drive which does not exist. Can anyone tell me how to instruct the XP system to recognise the USB drive and get rid of "ghost drive" G? -- Hardy Country

solidworks and antivirus conflicts?
by Guest Ann- 0 replies

Okay, this is an annoying problem. I built a new machine with an Intel Core2 Duo and Intel 965 board, 8gb ram, nvidia quadro fx560 and xp pro x64. Our company runs Solidworks, COSMOSWorks. The install was standard and I installed all the updates. The only thing I had a problem with is finding a functional audio driver which isn't a problem because this machine doesn't need audio to do what it was built to do. I got all the other drivers working just fine and just disabled the audio. I set it up on our domain and installed Solidworks Premium and COSMOSWorks. After it is all installed, I run the program and open up an assembly. It opens, WOW, super f…

Hi. I'm using "Wireless Intellimouse Explorer" with "Intellipoint 4.1" software. Every time I start the computer, I have to run "dplaunch.exe Mouse CPL" and exit without doing anything in order for re-assigned buttons to work. When I open the mouse program, the button assignments are as I set them, but they won't work untill I exit. Then all is well until next re-boot. Thanks in advance. Latsh NJ

system cannot log on domain not available
by Guest A.Translator- 0 replies

I have reformatted my c: drive and re-installed Windows XP Home. After the installation was finished, I tried to log on for the first time, but got this error message " you cannot log on for the domain NAME is not available" - or words to that effect, my system in not in English. Googling on the subject took me to a microsoft TechNote that talked about changing the security policy. Only, I cannot change anything, for I cannot log on, can't get in at all. Note: the owner of the computer used to be called OLDNAME. I now used NAME. I did not think changing the name would matter, as I reformatted the hd. Can someone help me to get into the system? Thanks.…

Active-Inactive Partitions?
by Guest Jethro- 14 replies
I have a system someone else set up that now has two partitions on the machine's single drive. The original OS was ME and XP HOME was installed on it. He ended up with the old ME portion and all its apps in partition C, and the new XP portion in partition D. Partition C is the active partition. At boot-up you get the option of selecting ME or XP, and both seem to work fine. I want to delete partition C and then add it's space to partition D. PQMagic warns me to be sure to make the remaining partition the new active partition after partition C is deleted. I am afraid to proceed because I can find no way to specify (set) whether a partition is active or not…

Can no longer remote desktop to a 2003 server
by Guest just bob- 4 replies
After a reboot over the weekend our admins can no longer remote desktop to administer a 2003 DC server which is also our file/print server. I checked the event logs on the client and the server and there are no relevant entries. It is as if the RD service is not running but it is. No other problems with the server, it's running fine, our users are reporting no issues and again, the event log is clean. Any ideas? Thank you, -Bob
