XP Pro computer w/ all the updates except IE7. When you put your mouse over some of the links on the pages, the pages open up, but others (majority) don't. It is like there is a pop-up blocker or something blocking the pages from opening from the links. Is there something I can do to correct this (other than a rebuild)? Is there a setting that will correct this? HELP!!!

Recovery with broken DVD drive
by Guest jah191@gmail.com- 5 replies

I have a Toshiba a a25-s207 running Windows XP. Toshiba included the recovery disk on a DVD which includes a fresh windows install as well as all the drivers required by the laptop. Unfortunately it seems as if my DVD/CD drive laser is malfunctioning. While the drive still reads CD, it refuses to read any DVDs. I believe the drive has two different lasers/circuits so perhaps the DVD one is fried. Anyway, what is the best way to obtain a relatively clean install of XP without being able to use my recovery drive?

Recover Dynamic Disk
by Guest Ron Gallimore- 3 replies

I updated my home server to Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 today. When I rebooted it could not find ntfs.sys. I tried to copy the ntfs.sys file from the CD to the HDD but I kept getting access denied. Forgetting that I was using dynamic disks in this server I stuck it in my XP SP2 workstation to recover the files. That is where the problems begin. I can not read the disk since it is dynamic and I accidently destroyed the mirror apparently. It was running RAID 1 in the server. I still have the second disk that I have not touched since I do not want to lose any data. Is there any way to recover the data short of paying for recovery software or pr…

.NET 1.1 Security Update Won't Install
by Guest David Owens- 6 replies

I can't get the .NET 1.1 SP1 security update to install. It fails every time. I tried just uninstalling .NET 1.1 because I don't have any software that needs it, but for some reason Windows Update still keeps nagging me about installing the security update, even with .NET 1.1 not installed. Is there a way to completely clean out whatever leftover parts of .NET 1.1 are still there? I found a MS Knowledge Base article about manually uninstalling .NET but it wanted me to also uninstall 2.0. Windows XP wouldn't let me uninstall 2.0 because it said there was software that depended on it.

Mouse Behavior
by Guest Roger Fink- 0 replies

I'm running a five button wired Intellimouse Optical mouse using Kensington Mouseworks software on W2K. I've done this for years (mostly on 98SE) and it's a very nice setup - virtually bug free and much better than Microsoft's Intellipoint software. But lately I've developed a problem which at least so far I can't correct. For some reason, despite my user settings to the contrary, the mouse automatically moves the pointer to the default setting in a dialog box. The user setting under Mouse in the control panel - which is set to disallow this behavior - appears to be reflected in the registry setting as best I can tell. The only computer events I can think of th…

Boot failure
by Guest Alan T- 4 replies

I got my SATA Maxtor 250GB dual boot with Win2K at the moment. Recently I got boot failure problem: Just inside the BIOS, even before the option menu, it said something like Non system disk please insert system disk... I reboot it again, press F8 to select the first book disk, then it went to the OS selection menu and boot into XP. However, its very slow and somethimes it hung, in some occassions when I using LavaSoft AdWare scanning my computer it was hung. I found that my partition is fragmented quite seriously, is that make my computer so slow and even hang? In addition, is there a way to repair/inspect my boot sector?

HARD DRIVE LOST DATA
by Guest Anton Jansen- 10 replies

I have just reinstalled WindowsXP because I felt evrything was running slowly and to many errors were occuring. I upgraded to 2x2.4Mhz=4.8 CPU and the machine is now lightning fast. I have three hard drives and when I did a format, I accidently formatted the wrong drive. I now have c:=160Ghz f:=300Ghz and g:=400Ghz. The c: and f: drives are OK but because g: was reformatted and XP installed on it, I had to remove it from my system because at startup the system would boot from G: I can however use g: via USB. There are very important video files on this g: drive which were lost with reformat. I have tried 3 different recovery programs but for for some reaso…

[OT?] CD-ROM and Hard Drive on Same Cable
by Guest W. Watson- 4 replies

I can't find a suitable PC hardware NG that looks current, so I'll post here until someone directs me to a better NG. It's been awhile since I played hook up with drives. Here's my problem. I have a CD-ROM drive at the end of a cable. It works fine. I thought I'd stick a HD in as a slave. It doesn't get detected. I made it a slave. However, I have no idea what the CD-ROM thinks it is--Ah, master according to BIOS. It looks like it has two jumpers. (What are the jumper possibilities for it?) It's a 56x Disc shown in BIOS as G6D M1.30. I'm pretty sure the cables are 48-pin. The HD is a boot disk from an older system, and is in a removable drive (handle on…
